On the -- well we spend about 13 of our lives sleeping some of us much more.
How much do we really understand about what happens after we shot -- on a new book a journeys into that largely unexplored territory.
Dreamland.
Adventures in the strange science of sleep author and reporter Dave Randall joins us now appropriately in bed so early and most of -- yeah.
We'd like to work frankly I didn't -- -- nice to see you thanks that was a pretty fascinating topic and you saving you've got the idea for this because you were sleepwalking.
Get -- the idea almost literally -- in the -- answers sleepwalking and ran into in my hallway walls.
Woke up a lot of pain on my back decided -- -- to find out how -- -- -- affect demand I want my doctor he basically said.
You know we know a lot about -- there's a lot we don't know.
So without a suspect to me like that's how that affected everybody else.
One of the incredible things aren't covered in your research is that men and women.
Sleep differently and this could be perhaps the reason maybe somebody arguments come out of sleeping in in families is this right exactly research has shown that.
Sleep as one of the best predictors of happiness and a marriage.
Basically men have more sleep disorders than women but women tend to sleep a little bit later.
So they almost have to deal with the sleep problems more than the -- so -- -- snoring on a regular basis and their lighter sleepers this can cause real marital problems exactly research has shown that a woman sleep with about 50% more likely she's not sleeping while there's more likely that there be arguments.
Whether be other disagreements -- Course we're testing for not getting sleep of course and in that that makes perfect sense to me.
Now that what is the exact amount of sleep we need is it different for everybody or is eight hours the standard.
Is generally eight hours for everybody most people need about two hours one our receivers -- -- -- their way some people can go less than that but generally it's eight -- That's incredible and what about dreaming how important is it for us to be able to remember our dreams that.
It's very often really once every two months I'll remember a dream is that a bad thing.
Generally if you remember your dreams obviously a little bit deeper which is a good thing -- but most streams they found it might be a way that our brains learn new information that's kind of that.
Figures out what's important what it should keep in the long commemorating.
And what kind of throw away.
Why so many Al lost sleep deprived and having weird sleep disorders now it is.
Part of it is that we're kind of tired and wired.
All of us are drinking coffee were sleeping less than we should most of asleep many a sleepless in six hours a night to sleep deprivation which basically makes -- -- and planes -- sure now that I'm -- an explanation is so lessons -- -- is sleep deprived.
People going to bed with I guess like electronic devices are staying awake longer because of -- screens in front of their faces exactly when he's here iPad when you see your iPhone your brain basically think that some -- and makes it harder for you to fall -- -- later.
So what is the answer have you did you find out this.
Solution for our country I wish I did I mean I have a two month old baby if I could sleep more that I heard it.
But basically it's this kind of basic things in a -- exposure to light watch how much coffee -- drink and try to do things kind of calm yourself before you go to that we always -- patterns are so important and going to sleep that making sure you have a routine and a pattern by a you know not every night fluctuating did you find -- that was true and accurate exactly should try to go to bed at the same time every night whether it's the -- -- not wake up at the same time every night.
Missed almost like when your little kid -- hopes to have at that time.
The honesty of a two month old home have you gone through what Dave and I done which is likely to now method you're sleep your subjective hearing so white she had a baby crying -- tonight.
In just kind of turn overlooked.
Or you think I got up last time read a lot of -- at Disney.
In the morning is -- and right well good luck you are obviously gonna need a lot.
Leave that in -- it rattled the book is dreamland.
Adventures in the strange -- Obviously thanks so much for coming into thank you and thanks to -- to -- in bed this morning appreciate it very complicated.
