Welcome to The Journal Editorial Report I'm -- if you go well all eyes are on Mitt Romney as he makes is official debut as the Republican presidential nominee.
Thursday night in Tampa Florida going into the convention just 38.
Percent of voters have a favorable opinion.
Of the former Massachusetts governor so what can he do.
To help turn back around.
Joining the panel this week Wall Street Journal columnist and deputy editor Dan heavier political diary editor Jason Riley and editorial board member.
Dorsey -- and always so horrific.
People haven't warmed to Mitt Romney we know that what does he need to do to communicate with people -- to to change change that opinion.
He has to open himself up in a way that he hasn't before in a -- that many politicians don't but he especially.
The talent on the political trail is to make a list of all of the things you're going to deal with gonna close this department is gonna do this -- on the business to do.
Used to sustain.
A long speech at the convention and elsewhere.
-- he says I mean though there's anguish in this land I note -- that there is long -- unemployment.
He has got to instead of passing though with that and say I'm gonna fix -- gonna say I know what it feels -- to go.
I know what it should feel like to go to -- employment office -- no help they had to have -- answers to have nothing left in draw.
Of what American to feeling like.
Everybody in America -- somebody who was unemployed and everybody has a cousin and uncle and then this week just to the heart.
-- showing who he is they have never seen before someone who has incorporated.
Okay -- here they can you can you basically saying to borrower cliche from Bill Clinton he -- he needs to show people that he feels walks there paint -- Jason do you agree with that.
Well I think one of the reasons that hasn't happened so far has to do the Obama machine has been outspent they'll have a little more money to tap into after the nomination -- right now.
Com Obama has been defining Romney with negative ads and negative ads work.
So he will be able to push back -- whether he should use that opportunity to go.
Toe to -- on like ability with Obama not so sure empathy I think she -- empathy.
I'm not so sure I think that might played Obama's strength I think he'd do better.
To focus on his accomplishments as governor.
Keeping import unemployment low saving the Olympics and you talk is success as a his business record success -- -- Keep the focus on his accomplishments.
And I think what Tom let Obama play at a local electability game I don't I don't think that that plays -- -- Stress is it doesn't work that has not worked we have heard enough about the Olympics we have heard endlessly about the Olympics there.
You know I say this -- -- to bring up this subject but Franklin Roosevelt when he died somebody was caught crying in the report is said to him.
Did you know mr.
Roosevelt he says I didn't know mr.
Roosevelt that he knew me -- right.
Now you can't the the embracing.
-- Mediate the dispute how but where do you come down on this because they are gonna bring in these -- testimonials a hole all week to his business success to -- Olympic success.
Bain Capital now bracing and as he did an op Ed -- our Romney did himself in an op Ed in our paper.
So they do want to bring out this record of success and is this personal portrait.
I don't disagree with Dorothy and Jason.
That Romney has to do these things the election however is not about Mitt Romney it's about the American people and the situation they're in right now.
I would push a little bit further than -- northeast suggested.
Which is that Mitt Romney is is represented himself as a guy who understands business right wrote and published a piece on the wall street journal editorial page this Friday in which he described four by businesses he had worked with.
He's got to go out there and talk about what's in the minds of employers now who are not hiring.
The Americans who want jobs why aren't they doing that that something Mitt Romney understands and what has Barack Obama done.
To prevent those employers from making those hires he's got to make them understand.
He knows the way the economy works and why it.
Isn't -- it speaks to his personal experience exactly -- What about the agenda Jason.
I mean people are looking for answers right the people that Dougherty talks about -- are hurting they want to know.
Not only does Romney get what you gonna do for -- and how is he going to do it specifically tell me.
One -- the three or four or five items that he needs to lay out or just give me a couple.
That would -- reassure people that he has answers while jobs is obviously foremost on people's minds about how an unemployment.
-- down and he would probably.
Say I need to lift -- the regulatory -- off of businesses.
Give people some some sense of of security when it comes to the future what tax rates are going to be.
And so what whoever wants talking about the fiscal -- -- -- that does not help in terms of job creation and economic growth so I wanna give people some certainty.
And I think that's got to be part of Mitt Romney's agenda in terms of what he would do differently than what Obama's done.
Well it's -- doing that we have heard before and yes we could -- more of that but the real sense of company that is to make people feel.
He knows what we have going through and so one thing hit swollen shut all of the polls now he doesn't really understand -- that.
This is the opportunity to say yes I know this and.
But then I have to think.
Know how they're gonna get from where they are into a better future he -- -- 03 years he has to do both a personal and the and the and and the yes he did polls are even even with his personal.
Approval being favorable as being down.
If he this convention gives them a chance to to break out if he could connect in some way our.
