And welcome to FOX News Sunday panel plus what bill press still -- and power as my cock -- -- governor Mike Huckabee and Juan Williams.

And let's talk about the convention.

How big a deal as -- bill.

How big a deal is an -- and an opportunity.

Either positively or negatively is a convention for a candidate.

I think for challenger who's not that well known they Mitt Romney is not a John McCain or Bob Dole -- -- in national politics 2030 years.

It's a big moment and and the Romney speech just dwarfs everything else in terms of importance far -- speeches.

Someone important tonight it will be very good and Romney's -- is -- nice it's will be an interesting moment for.

-- -- -- has -- -- the Mitt Romney's speech Thursday night is just that it is very big that class the debates are the two moments where in a very close race.

Governor Romney can make his case to the American public gets a big deal forty when people will be watching you know.

Political experts.

Way back in about 1980 told me curious than that there's an open window theory of polyps are only a few times during the year.

When people open their windows that are receptive to hearing to -- you know not us political junkies -- -- every day.

And that this is one of those moments that that his acceptance speeches an open window moment where he gets to talk to forty million people really who have not heard him at length.

For the first time to help define who we is what he's about but the contrast is is -- that -- dale.

Yeah well -- into that should couple that -- you -- is about five points usually -- -- -- expectations you usually have both sides will get five points except when you have -- -- highly polarized elections like this one and so you don't you know -- -- and let me just -- ethnicity does bounce when the conventions -- a month apart now when they -- -- in this -- begin on Tuesday.

Right Scott McLaughlin John Kerry only got about two points and that was a very polarized electorate and people kind of felt strongly about one side or the other and I think that this election is more like that people RD kind of are dug in on where they are it's true that Mitt -- not very well known and so.

Among independents maybe he -- sway a couple people which is important.

But it you know we haven't seen the dynamics of this race really changed very much no matter what happens -- that the numbers pretty much tend to stay the same.

-- I think that there's going to be a great opportunity for Mitt Romney -- fourth something that I saw and do a couple of weeks ago and Ohio.

He really engage with the voters in a rally there and I I was sort of had taken by the speech that I watched on television thinking.

He goes out there in Tampa and delivers that -- speech with that passion and that sense of empathy for people.

And I think he's gonna see is numbers -- by more than -- point.

Points it was certainly remarkable Mitt -- speech you know I -- throw a little -- guys would say pick and get a wide shot of the fall behind us.

It it's very interesting because they apparently got a bunch of Hollywood set directors to to design this and this speaks to your point that it normally.

To the podium is like a fortress are all these big walls and -- and as you can see it's very exposed and very accessible first of all it's all.

-- -- Little crazy but all these wood tones and -- you know -- there's stairs leading up to the podium and there's the that the guy who will be speaking is right out there by himself.

Really forward Blake -- through the crowd and that's one of the points apparently governor they want to make us the idea that he's right there with the people.

And you know it sounds like.

You know mumbo Jumbo stagecraft but it doesn't.

Make a difference but well they're Republican Party -- a lot of money got -- well they got the -- Tom selvin it is green shag carpet -- -- feel like I just had a backpack on our feet up on the get on the coffee table and have a chat.

-- Well I think you know one of the things about this convention given that it's a stage show -- you just describe the TV show was.

Is that people I think will focus on things that happened off.

Script and so people are looking for exactly what is it -- that is -- what is the primary message.

And when you look around and you realized -- my gosh you know -- -- Donald Trump show up what does that say about trump I mean they're people in the party who think.

You know this birth -- things a little out of control does that carry the day the celebrations.

People like Herman Cain Michelle Bachmann does that -- today.

Where is President Bush.

You know always President Bush now I'm not allowed into all Republican Convention I think that you're gonna see the critics.

Look for a lot of things that are off script signals coming from this convention.

-- -- -- -- -- Get a credits we'll look trip that I don't know I was there in the bush write us tonight to the first bush right -- And Bill Clinton gave -- awfully strong speech and they got a sixteen pound point bounce that's not gonna happen this year but it's more polarized electorate.

But I think for a challenger running against incumbent Wendy's has a little bit of a mixed -- there wasn't Clinton in 92 about him personally and also about his record.

That moment the opportunity you have had your vice presidential nominee does -- -- -- of gore was very strong and I do.

This that the weekend that the VP pick plus the convention altogether does give you a chance to sort of be judicious averages up for the first time -- -- thank.

It's apparent lot of Americans so I think it's an event I think the big moment is the Romney's speech all the other stuff is sort of minor league -- -- and.

And let me just point out as a matter of historical perspective that in 1988 I was -- floor reporter for NBC at the -- convention it was an enormously successful convention.

Michael Dukakis gave a great speech they got a seventeen point.

Response in the Paul's.

And I went on to write quite stunning defeat have quite that bad defeat in November saw so much for convention bounces.

Thank you -- -- placed second with us throughout the week let us know what you think about the conduct to what's important what -- -- and react to it as you see the events happen.

We'll see you back here next Sunday from --
