You know political experts usually say -- -- a VP pick always good -- Attention people -- to talk about it.
But that it rarely moves voters in the end but there's an editorial this morning.
This suggests that the Ronnie -- taking it may be changing the rules of that game.
In that piece today Bill Kristol writes this what -- what everyone knows about presidential elections is wrong.
Everyone knows vice presidential candidates don't matter.
Except that on August 11 the day that Paul Ryan was announced Mitt Romney trailed by almost five percentage points in the real -- politics average of polls.
Two weeks later he writes Ronnie had pulled to within one point.
His strongest rally of the general election season.
Let's talk about -- a little bit and who better to do that list and our good friend former New York governor George attacking joins me now good morning governor good morning Martha.
What about logic with Bill Kristol writes about this morning.
Well I think he's right that what we often think our conventional rules of politics don't apply to -- current election.
You're always looking at the last election and saying how is that going to impact this one the fact is that they're all different.
I think as he pointed out you pointed out picking up Paul Ryan.
Was a brilliant move by Mitt Romney because what -- is saying is I'm not just putting out policy papers I'm not just talking about balancing the budget.
I'm not just talking about reforming entitlements.
I have specific programs and the guts to work to achieve it if the people give me the chance now another point that crystal made in that article.
Is that -- conventional wisdom the voters don't care about all these detailed issues they do.
The voters are far more intelligent far more engaged they understand this country is headed in the wrong direction.
I believe that's why the Romney Ryan Pickett did the right thing and talking seriously about issues I think they're going to win this election.
Yeah you know we're gonna see -- of course on stage together just a few days from now here in Tampa.
We do you have some polls that -- the impact of some of this that we want -- -- -- on the screen for.
Viewers at home so they can take a look.
This is the first sort of team at ticket polls that we've had here at fox and this is what they look like.
Obama Biden 43%.
Romney Ryan 45%.
And then let's take a look at the head to head poll Ryan numbers is Biden in terms of opinion of these two players among presidential.
Likely voters.
Favorable 46% Biden 45% -- so they're very tight on that mark.
It you know what do you make of these numbers there was so much discussion about how Paul Ryan was you know.
-- likable and a lot of people's opinion that his views were so extreme that his budget was so controversial.
That he was a crazy -- from -- -- Paul Ryan numbers Paul Ryan is a very likable guy and I think that's the American people get to know him.
They're going to say that not only is this a guy who is intelligent.
Who understands -- -- and has the right ideas to change things but he is a likable guy that I can identify with and that poll you saw that.
Biden's favorable was one point higher.
Then Paul Ryan's but Paul Ryan was.
Unknown virtually by point percent of Americans they're gonna get to know them they're going to like him -- going to understand he is a serious candidate who.
Knows government and can relate to people and I think it's a very good choice and Martha.
Just one -- you were just talking about the Twitter accounts in the virtual media at this convention I think the conventional wisdom.
That young people overwhelmingly will again vote for President Obama is something that governor Romney has a chance to turn around.
It's the young people are getting killed by the deficit sixteen trillion we're going to hit this year.
It's young voters who can't find a job when they get out of school -- I think what Paul Ryan on the ticket we can break that conventional wisdom to.
Not today but by November and that's when it matters.
You know it's fascinating when you think about the fact that in the past eighty years and incumbent.
Has only lost twice Carter and the first President Bush I mean we -- it is an uphill battle against an incumbent always.
Yeah how do you think that fits into the scenario right now what comparisons would you make to sort of what happened in those two elections democratic times that we're living in now and what they might -- Well you have to two things that I would look at -- minus.
Whether or not you think the current president is doing a good job.
And clearly the American people understand that President Obama has done not a good job and -- and the second thing I'd look at.
Is is the country headed in the right direction.
And overwhelmingly.
Americans believe probably by more than 21 that we are headed in the wrong direction.
These are telling numbers they don't mean governor Romney's going to win but they mean that he has an excellent chance if he didn't get his message out to the American people.
And the President Obama a President Obama can't run on its record.
That the people who understand that record in our.
Tremendously disappointed so it's going to try to just attacked and demonize the Romney Ryan ticket I don't think that's going to work I think the American people know better.
They're engaged this year because they know we need change in direction in this country.
That's why I'm optimistic about our case.
Happy to read about the engagement -- people clearly are paying a lot of attention and we're really on the -- -- the next chapter.
When they start to pay a whole lot more as this thing gets fired up in Tampa governor always good to see you thank you -- lots thank you Martha good being on with.
So we also --
