-- -- -- -- -- Our history shows.
That we stand up when it counts and it's this quality that is defined America's character and -- significance in the world.
I know the simple truth and I am not afraid to say that our ideas are right for America and their ideas have failed America.
It's true that -- insects -- if successful it each new challenge he's taken on.
You want it actually amazes me to see his history of success been attacked.
Are those really -- values that made our country great.
A as a mom of five boys do we don't raise our children to be afraid of success.
-- Do we send our children not in the world with the advice.
Try to do okay.
-- and let's be honest if -- last for years had been more successful do we really think there would be this attack and Mitt Romney's success.
Out of course -- And now hoping that -- Republican National Convention that didn't get off to a successful start and most importantly to the GOP.
Will -- convention sway undecided voters.
-- now our political panel ABC news senior -- editor Rick Klein.
Watching -- -- chief political correspondent Byron York and time -- deputy Washington bureau chief Michael Crowley.
Rick first few let's start with and Romney haven't.
Did she achieve that which the GOP one from her tonight.
Well this is about the finding the man -- man Romney and she can do it like no one else -- I think she gave a terrific speech particularly given the fact he hasn't done it's very often before she can talk about Mitt Romney on a personal level.
I was struck though by eight you know I thought the blunt instrument in the room would be -- -- that Chris Christie and ended up being and -- is what does anyone else because.
He just she just hit exactly where the weak spots are and said look.
A women I love women of course women don't go out -- Mitt Romney there was really no subtlety in that speech I -- it maybe a little bit more personal little bit more.
A little stories and yet something that tells you a little bit about Mitt Romney instead it was we need to reach these voters -- and she was out there doing that she looked great sounded great but I felt like it was a human elements the missing -- Her job.
-- to conveyed to the viewers the confidence that she feels and her husband -- This man will not fail I mean clearly and Romney believes -- the if -- were in an airplane.
And a pilot died of a heart attack her husband would find a way to land the plane safely and she's trying to tell the American people this.
I I think you'd agree I think Chris Christie did not live up to the billing and it it dawned on me as I was watching that.
All the great Chris Christie moments that we know that we've seen on YouTube.
Are usually him in a spontaneous encounter with some jerk who's who's who's hassling him and then -- just destroys them.
A big set piece you know not so much so I think that he did not shine in this format.
But well I agree to -- these guys are saying -- -- did a great job she's radiant she's confident she's likable.
Did I agree with the positives I would say that what struck me most.
Where did the way that it demonstrates means you negatives that the campaign is clearly -- that worried about so Rick mentioned.
Women there's clearly -- gender gap and she was just pushing so hard on that theme of connecting with women speaking to women.
Obviously there's kind of a natural gender can -- that's gonna be there but I really thought.
It showed me how concerned they are about trying to connect this candidate to women.
And the other point is the one you just made.
That question of trust and that -- you can trust me it.
She can do it -- -- I think it shows also that she hasn't broken through his like ability numbers are still low his negatives are high and I think that.
A lot of voters -- Pretty ready to fire Barack Obama from the job but they're not quite ready to hire Mitt Romney I don't think they entirely trust them.
-- been a lot of negative attacks I think they have questions about a minute think she's trying to be a proxy to seal that deal is that you can trust this man.
So -- achieved a very good job there's also an interesting window -- two things I think campaign's very worried about my.
And Kerry's win them -- the big thing is is the undecideds and I'd love to know what the undecided women at home thought here's a woman who has been a homemaker.
-- she's lived in -- -- very bad privileged environment terms of money -- -- health issues life.
A lot of issues that -- that many women going through.
But you know they had thought I was serving inching because he will offer them your -- governors and you're from lawyers are your from senators.
Hi I actually thought -- are in pristine mountain is that this is a homemaker traditional homemaker and I wondered you know.
I actually thought that dead I -- -- -- reached a lot of women in America who have elected to stay home.
She was trying to say one.
Romney earned his success he'd he'd -- and that's not -- -- that his father was a big successful rich executive that Mitt Romney earned his own.
Money he made his own success and this notion that they have a storybook marriage that everything's -- -- perfect their children perfect their lives perfect I don't worry about money everything's great.
Is it well what you know the story -- -- never had a chapter on breast cancer never had a chapter on on -- so she was trying to say that that we indeed suffered.
And in the way is that everybody else I've rescission is trying to humanize him and that because there really is this sense of the of the Romney's being kind of too perfect.
And trying to connect -- voters by saying.
Not the case.
Rick how big.
Governor Christie camp for a second thought he's running for office -- but they don't realize it -- Even pep club he's that was his -- into the -- everybody revved up and that was his job.
There's a good parallel here to draw I think it's a Barack Obama in 2004 where he got that convention going for for the candidate who was John Kerry.
Ultimately they'll get in that case in this case it was more about the person delivering a speech than the person -- convention it was so.
No question but that reflected glow can work well for Mitt Romney but that's -- was really not about Mitt Romney in fact that we highlighted.
As Michael's talking about some of the week this is that Mitt Romney has.
We were told -- passionate about this guy that really doesn't inspire passion.
If you look at that speech it took awhile for him to even mention the words Mitt Romney when he got around to it it didn't sound like he was endorsing -- advocating.
Mitt Romney's ownership of the party and the other thing it didn't say it was the word Obama he never mentioned in this matter of fact even mentioned.
The president just one time when he was talking about the full list.
I think his interest and silly as it plays well that that's gonna change -- -- you're gonna -- figures come out really hit Obama hard.
And the interesting thing was that they clearly made decision -- tonight.
Was not a night.
To really hit the present -- And day as far as Chris Christie was concerned he didn't even talk about their own candidate -- -- -- day quick break -- stick around coming up much more.
