Last senate prime time when and Romney and the governor Chris Christie was out there are taking a high road in the first night largely talking about their vision for the future of America.
And not the personal attacks against President Obama and fact his name was not even mention.
-- the same thing happen next week in Charlotte.
Karl Rove former senior advisor -- deputy chief of staff to president George W.
Bush.
Joseph Trippi manager of the 2004 Howard Dean campaign both their Fox News contributors and welcome here.
-- and you both.
To be at your take on that.
You ought to -- what if they be Smart to.
Avoid for a lot of personal attacks on Romney next week it at the then that we'll see we'll see what would pretty close quickly here.
You know when you take a look at that last night one of the things that struck me.
Is that you know there was a moment -- this whole political process when it seemed like there wasn't a good nominee for the for the Republican Party.
And you watch last night -- -- Scott Walker and Nikki Haley and you know people like me a -- and all of these people and it started to feel like no matter what side you're on just -- valuing at that there's a pretty deep -- -- -- the deep bench was an apparent last night in a surprisingly so me a lot of us thought was a surprisingly Nikki -- people of you know in the party knew where it is expected good things over.
-- Davis was another surpassed last a Crystal -- -- big reputation -- -- -- have -- good good good good surprised Joseph come back to this point about the negativity that it was absent last night whether or not that's something -- Fallen -- next week -- I think I've walked it it's probably going to be followed up.
With negativity activity at the Democratic Convention not I I think I think that the party there's sort of have two different.
Things that they have to do that.
The Republican Party convention I think really is about framing Mitt Romney in anything really introducing I think Ian -- Romney did a great job last night of doing that.
He hasn't really had clear -- to do that because the primary season because of some of the things that happen in this over the summer.
But but I think last night we -- that's what they have to they come out of this convention.
Really positioning -- Mitt Romney that's better better for the Republicans on the democratic side.
Look I think.
This is it still about a chance that we're fighting over the definition of Mitt Romney right now does that does this party able to do that gave him off send him off.
Can the Democratic Party to find him keep defining the way they have.
-- not doing your tax returns those kinds of things and I think really these.
Today -- the rest this week in the Democratic Convention could really decide something I mean these conventions really could matter because it really is about who defines Mitt Romney us.
And you when you look at the definition that we were sort of presented with with -- -- last night it felt as if he came across as you know a grown up.
As as the dad and the CEO of the task oriented guy who you know as an at Enron is set and -- was a very.
As strong moment this man will not fail so what we're getting is this this.
Sort of package that says you know now he's not Chris Christie he's not gonna you know sort of knock your socks off with his one liners.
But perhaps this is a man for the time.
You know.
I think Joseph hit on -- very important point this really is a critical period of time about three or four weeks during which in the run up to the conventions.
And the movement out of both conventions where people's attitudes about Mitt Romney particularly the attitudes of swing and persuade -- voters are gonna be.
Not setting concrete -- are gonna start to take up of firmness of the solidity that they've not had before.
And that's why and Romney's speech was so cordless and -- she was nervous and it gave -- remark and to begin -- -- -- -- drive she hit her stride but like even the nervousness.
Gave it an authenticity this was a woman talking about her husband.
And it in and time to deeply personal way in about their marriage in a car with.
That moment where she said -- -- the chapters of that story but marriage don't have five poised for a minute you -- on a rainy day.
Where they don't have chapters labeled M mass or breast cancer that was really -- -- -- powerful moment and I that you -- the promise of the point here is it is about reaching the undecideds out there not long haul and I think Christie last night.
We have there's been some disappointment -- go after Obama enough he wasn't -- he wasn't he wasn't real -- I'm really wanted wanted to know that's what else all wanted to hear.
But what he did was talk to the undecideds -- out there.
-- -- it -- if he had counted on Obama and that way I think it would turn those people bought I got on -- AT&T Robert Gibbs last night called this a very angry convention.
-- -- -- strange tonight they'll -- that only -- -- deadline last week at a media that they -- I hate to be good even did you have agreed with Joseph.
But it but -- is absolutely right.
Christie made that speech.
For the people who were watching.
The people in the audience wanted him to treat them like this was some town hall meeting in the majors he was some intemperate leader of the low price -- -- -- yeah.
Exactly but he hit that I thought perfectly and then.
Of course he did have to sort of stand up you know you have it and they are great at the adding got to stand up and I think I think it was -- he was absolutely focused on.
The people watching who were sitting there saying -- -- the sink as I heard about -- try to figure what this is all about -- thought it was really well that.
It is -- -- people they speak to edit it played better at holiday death wish I had yeah there was some negativity last night but it was delivered.
In you know -- davis' speech was powerful because he said in essence.
I was with Obama for years ago and here were from those of you watching who share that here were our expectations.
And here's what he's done -- he talked about you know.
You know attacking success in boosting the occupiers and so forth and I thought I thought that was that it was it it didn't come across -- mean spirited.
Or vicious but it did come across to -- strong contrast and that he was one of the two surprises me.
The other thing I agree that sort of I think through the one thing is -- -- people expect too much got every once speech start Crimean Romney's feature Chris Christie's -- 81 speech that does this is gonna be.
What does Ryan do to -- do they build on this -- Romney continue to build on it.
Do they come out of the convention in and define Mitt Romney in a better way.
That's an eighty's when I mean is it planned these things you're interested in the arc of the narrative you want to have these things.
All sort of -- to get it like a gigantic political puzzle.
This sort of dual boot moves you along in the direction you -- -- go and I have to take my hat off to rush tree from the rather putting this together because they're paying a lot of attention to -- we'll see how what do you make it.
Great point mark and I talked about it late into the night last night it is -- a bar with a episcopal priest who married married -- You're the guy.
-- hear your -- -- -- just isn't quite what to -- a Florida -- -- it -- like if -- cities had to -- -- over here in the hall it's one thing and when you see it on -- TV monitor later.
It can take on a whole different complexion of gentlemen thanks to both you we'll bring you back tomorrow night.
If you're willing.
