When he talks it's a pretty big deal we're gonna talk about that we're gonna recap and Romney speech from last night we're gonna look at the president's efforts with young voters we're gonna talk about some other cool stuff that we're doing.
But there is nothing cooler that we are going to do today than welcome back to power play.

From the Obama campaign the first one was.
I'm very narrowly focused on Medicare.
The second one which was last week the beginning of last week and the week before that was extreme on social issues.
Now they're packaging it together they're saying he's just that that video that look like a movie tone newsreel that he's just a relic of the past.
For Paul Ryan he does kind of look like Eliot -- he does kind of have a throwback look about him is that isn't there a danger that Democrats will will finally succeed in defining him.
You know your analogy is even better than you may have thought about Eliot mess clean the mess in Chicago.

I don't mean that -- -- why they think about it at Chicago.
So congratulations.
For being psychologically correct that's psychologically correct if that's I'll take whatever I can get.
So but Ryan -- these vulnerabilities I mean the Democrats are gonna keep pushing on them look.
The important thing for people to understand.
Is that there is no surprise.
And what the Democrats are doing right I refer everybody -- a wonderful article I think Ben Smith wrote it about a year ago today or maybe a year ago last week.
In Politico.
In which he interviewed the Obama campaign for what their strategy was and the title of the article is.
Kill Romney right and they talk in there about how they're gonna attack him on everything that is personal.
And and what they're doing to Paul Ryan is an extension of that because they knew as far back as a year ago this guy has nothing to run -- You know he may have started with Greek columns and fake smoke.
But but we have gone through four years of nothing else lots -- smoke and nothing else.
Now I also want to ask you about this Robert Gibbs doesn't like you.
Thank you I think that's what makes this thing had to instead -- of that security was being interviewed.
Last night on MSNBC.
He was.
It's called the Republican events last -- a strange night this angry convention.
Didn't understand that and when he would it was pointed out what you had said earlier in the evening about praising the evening -- what it was good.
He said that that if you were the focus group for the Republican national party.
Did that this party was.
Gonna lose.
Cook last night it was a great night and -- only and Romney Chris Christie two great speeches.
But you look at the lineup for the whole night.
Starting with may have -- level -- you talk you.
Ted Cruz.
The son of Cuban immigrants now the nominee.
For the senate in in Texas governor send -- out.
-- Mexican American.
Governor of Nevada.
Governor Haley Indian American governor of South Carolina a great woman who's done well down there.
-- you have -- to Davis who actually in nominated.
Governor President Obama in the 2008.
Look at that that eclectic if you will gathering and -- and the beautiful speeches that they put forward were all.
Forward looking they were talking about the American dream in one way -- the other now.
I do understand that for the Obama administration and the gives -- of the world.
When you talk about the American dream there's a connotation of negativity in their head because they don't understand it.
They have no idea.
With the American dream is all about and Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan of -- -- we explain.
To America what we seem to have forgotten in the -- disastrous years we've had out of the moment.
Strange now one cable network there's been a car -- awful about one cable network that did not show during their evening of coverage last night did not show any.
Speakers of color.
Did not show any minority speakers they -- of wait for each one think it was deliberate.
I'm not saying I'm I'm wondering if I'm wondering if you see any conspiracy and that's.
Look these guys have an agenda the liberal media has an agenda.
The MSNBC's.
Of the world have an agenda.
They there to protect this failed presidency by any means possible.
And and I think the list of speakers I ran off -- you didn't have a single white male in that.
And and so.
You didn't but Bob McDonnell is very white and he's definitely not -- and you know he kinda screwed the street Gupta yeah.
But the but the point it is a that and it did last night's speeches by a very diverse crowd is what this Republican Party is all about it was young.
A lot of females.
A lot of men and women of color.
A lot of Hispanic not only speakers but Hispanic success stories that within the party.
Governor Martinez a bit of New Mexico.
All of these folks understand.
That the opportunity party.
The party that will make a difference for those who have just come to America but those who haven't been given a -- to deal in the past and America is the Republican Party.
Now you've seen this happen I mean you have the advantage of course being from New Hampshire that you've gotten to meet everybody who's run for president for quite a while.
-- the first one I think was Lincoln and but the you've gotten a chance to meet all these folks -- you've seen -- there's the magic moment that occurs.
-- presidential or vice presidential person when it goes from being theoretical being real that moment for Paul Ryan happens tonight.
When he walked out he's been out of the -- he's been out talking to people interact with voters shirt sleeves rolled up.
Tonight's the night that he auditions for the part of the vice presidency.
Talk about that moment.
Yeah he's got to walk off the states and say holy.
This is real -- It's very -- up this crowd is going to receive them well.
This is a it -- Paul Ryan is a young star of the Republican Party he's a thinker.
What scares the Democrats about on what -- the other President Obama about a is that Paul Ryan is a thinker and it really -- -- them.
Because he's quantitative in his studies he knows what's wrong with the federal budget.
He knows you spend more than you taking -- you have problems.
Now you do have an administration that is squad quantitatively challenge this is still the president that at some -- thought we had 57 -- 58 states.
And a proud and this -- the crowd this is the crowd that last week was telling us.
That they created more jobs in the last 27 months than Ronald Reagan did in in the they created a four million plus jobs and -- -- seven months.
Ronald Reagan created seven million in the two years after -- fix the they caught -- failure and seventeen million.
In the eight years he was president.
Now this administration has trouble because they're not really sure that seven million is bigger than -- -- and therein is the problem America has today.

Last night when -- -- sore right Divx actually what you -- I close my access that this is stuff have staying power and the answer was she simply could be a legacy speech.
In terms so the First Lady who never held public office before -- urban and public life before.
Given an incredible speech frankly touching all the key points you need to have talked help her husband.
All right Mary Catherine was was Chris Christie standing backstage and she's like crushing this long ball -- -- doing all the governors like oh great now I get to follow that I felt that because for all worried about -- something tells me he felt -- about that I also thought that his speech was very very good and I think the plan here was to go.

I think that's how it worked I think his speech was very statesman like and I think people.
Knew what to expect from proceeding no he's good.
-- -- and expect that he brings the heat and he didn't bring the heat exactly he would not only thoughtful I'd and I -- -- I think that was really nice I thought it was I've thought it was well done in sort of it's a little bit above the -- Erica I enjoy.
But I'm this is my scans that are making and yet it's -- -- in the well they have different boxes to check.
But I think in Romney gave incredible speech and people were not expecting that -- little bit of a hidden -- I've been in her room with her she really -- that she has it she has an X-Factor.
And I didn't know if it would.
It would work in that room -- a big Plaisted to take up and as soon as she hit that stage.
It rapt attention I mean it was just it is pretty.
-- okay what do you say so I actually greeted you're -- the same face and me out but I think you've seen articles for months now about and Romney sort of secret weapon power.
Right and I think last night we saw the Romney campaign in the convention take that what not a -- I was in the -- introduction to two people last -- our membership young hopeful look who's tweeting about it.
They're excited about a young women across this country are looking for a role model on the right what about Chris Christie.
Well look Chris Christie is known for sort of his brash outgoing personality last night each had a -- -- face with him.
I probably get a guy and -- -- good god instead of -- lesson is what was different.
-- -- you know we had Ted -- don't know podium -- divorced because with different roles.
And I think Governor Christie fill the -- that he had which was like like -- their guidance at this Google sure is nice to get out.
His role last night at the end of the night was to say what a great speech let's unite keynote speaker after after -- -- and Ronnie was the talk of town and and that's important.
-- is there a danger for in Romney who.
Was a child of privilege to some degree.
And maybe not to the degree -- husband was but -- for her talking about eaten tuna fish and well and macaroni in the basement apartment.
And those things is when you win somebody who is as wealthy as the Romney's are successful as the -- are.
Is there a danger in trying to say we're we're just like you.
There's I -- you -- it right she said since when in America.
Is reaching success through Europe slid over your own broad problem.
And this is a different America the other sites trying to -- I mean.
-- their biggest challenge we have this this whole class warfare deal and she faced it head on she said listen.
He's -- successful.
-- reap the fruits of his success and -- a -- shared quite a bit to it with others.
And we're not ashamed at what we're proud of it and we want every American -- succeed and then she went on and talked about the youth do you really want your children.
To be in the hall of mediocrity so to speak coming you won your children are we special and -- wanted to succeed.
And that's what my husband has done and -- went in the world and America do we look down on that kind of stuff and Jeff but you put it back in perspective.
Mary -- she talked about her husband's.
In a way that any man would be thrilled to I mean that they're not just that she loved him.
But the -- the deep respect and the when she said he will not fail you and he what did he say he about.
She got -- home for you got to her home from the day -- and you do you know do stuff for you.
Is there danger that with women and stuff like that that it sounds maybe two Temi whenever it.
I don't I don't think I think I had to -- it sounded like.
This man has been incredibly good to me in my family -- this is who he is the way he has lived his life the way they he has you know.
Provided in and turned us into an American success story.
Is a great story and when an Enron he's strength is that she.
Does always sound authentic so I don't think there is as much danger for her talking about a part of their biography that the rest of the media will selectively edit.
Which is a time when they.
Had some struggles of course she's had other health struggles which I think are are immensely relatable -- I.
But she always sounds like she's being the person she is and that person happens to be very likable and I think she's on safe ground talking about this kind of thing.
Alex let's say you on electability factor -- haven't talked about -- sort of the sense of humor aspects last night.
It's -- sad that she's relatable especially young women to the old dating advice treat your girlfriend how you want your daughter to be treated I think young women heard that story last night.
-- realize this is some -- I can relate to this is how somebody I could grow up to want to be like for all this debate about how young women are doing in the party and how the -- reaching it.
-- -- was incredibly important she mentioned that after the other speakers throughout the night some of the younger congressional candidates earlier today talked about it and that's good for our party and affirmative.
I will say I need dance line was not my favorite not that -- not super and I wish I had heard a few of those specific stories about big hearted -- -- we've read about right in the past and I I think that's.
A personal preference that he does he literally she said he doesn't like to talk about those things I think they're great stories but I don't think they're gonna come from that's easy one says.
Kristi was good but not as exciting as I thought he would be.
And that's the problem with the expectations game in politics happy happy I was great we have to continue to deliver and -- -- power play here every day because we've set the bar so high for so much raw political excellence.

Conceding to incumbent president Jimmy Carter.
And what he was talking about was that once it was clear that he wouldn't have the delegates to get over the top.
That he went and conceded to Carter and supported him but brought the house down with that speech.
And this is power flag coming to you from the Republican National Convention down here in Tampa.
And what.
Conventions are now are sort of like PowerPoint presentations for the country it's a way to take people through and talk about the visions that parties had because it's been a long time since anybody really fought it out on the floor of -- convention.
The last time that happened was 1980.
And I want you remember what was going on.
Jimmy Carter.
Was the incumbent present -- United States rather a moderate Democrat former governor of Georgia and Ted Kennedy led an insurgency from the left against Jimmy Carter.
Weakened him and made it possible.
Or enabled anyway Ronald Reagan in his effort to unseat the incumbent.
It was a pretty big deal if you're a political junkie like me and you probably are if you're watching this right now this was a pretty big deal.
So we realize that down here in Tampa we happen to have four different people.
Who were playing four different roles on that day when this happened now I'm gonna introduce you to these people as they are known today as their business card will tell you today.
And then they're gonna tell you what they were doing that -- -- you know Joseph Trippi who is to Fox News contributor he's a democratic strategist do you view Internet to help revolutionized politics -- Howard Dean campaign.
Is -- not true.
I -- yeah yeah -- helped OK go below magnet had that -- -- -- and and you know and you know Pat Caddell and he is a democratic strategist pollster.
He is a guy who you read his columns and the Wall Street Journal you agreement foxnews.com is also a campaign insider.
This on you and he enjoys that you know Brit Hume he is our senior political analyst he is one of the reasons I do what I do for a living.

What were you doing that day what was your job.

-- you were receiving editorial support I was the floor -- I'm not convention -- yours so I had a while others had said some of the big microphone to -- that we all thought that they look kind of ridiculous.
If you're political correspondent.
You wanted to be have one of those things on and you wanted to be down on the floor and I was I was very excited about that and pat.
Well I would see a poll surgeons basically strategist Carter campaign we -- of this day trying to finish -- negotiations seeking Kennedy out.
He actually spoke about -- -- -- some wing talk about.
The my job was basically -- of that speech to go out and praised the speech.
So I was on the floor looking for people like -- you were spinning I was out there to spin how united we were what -- -- anti Reagan speech that water.
Desperately spinning and -- everywhere reader I was one of the floor managers for the Texas and Utah delegation for Kennedy.
In the fight against Carter who was pretty young at that time medicine might -- very early twenties -- remember beings stores REI it is people like -- human.
Other folks I'd seen on television mark -- comment about us it was pretty it was pretty pretty amazing thing to be on that okay so we've.
-- Kennedy still ended up about a third of the delegates.
But.
-- why -- started that what give us give us the -- of the day of the drama as we go into the well the big dollar little suspense of the convention was whether Kennedy would give full throated support enthusiastic support -- -- -- he was really gonna get it done.
Well there was no one knew -- and there was a when negotiations were going on between the two camps.
The men were not warm toward each other in any real way and and Kennedy positioning figure extemporaneously he was almost incoherent.
But.
But that's not the toughest through throughout -- career.
You know he said rumba you know amazing thing right -- formally re famous Kennedy is.
And but.
Rehearsed and written.
Speeches.
Delivered with a teleprompter he could be sensational.
And so.
What he was what he did that day and night and -- -- of which we just heard was.
This set piece speech he gave.
And it always ended with this amazing refrain about about you know the dream -- -- a dream will never die it was a dream will never die speech and democratic audiences heard.
I variation of that speech time and time again and I always brought the house down as he did on on.
And for you guys for the from the politicos.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The Carter guys were on one side of the room drinking Coke because.
-- Atlanta Georgia -- okay Coca-Cola and and the -- in all the skinny guys were in their drinking Pepsi communion and literally ran into this and if you don't and it ended this day -- I kind of lean towards drinking Pepsi over and over a Coke -- is speaking got that kind of you kind of bitter -- internal on the on the floor it was.
Horrendous fight it is.
The animosities were so great I would have been Teddy Kennedy's -- -- -- senate races 76 wanted to Carter and it worked for him for awhile.
And that and in McGovern campaign which I've worked -- Also many of the Kennedy people were old friends a month.
I was on the looks you can't understand how much this was Boston vs Atlanta -- like the civil war -- visited.
Got to put some label.
And Michael what was it as you are seeing all of this stream of data come through -- you have to be feeding everybody in setting this up what was that what was the -- was there urgency was there vibe.
-- otherwise I mean it was down on the floor those guys are closer to it but.
You know on the phone with us in the Booth -- the people.
Under these guys I think who were trying to get us to say.
Kennedy can do it or there's not a chance -- -- is gonna do it well because at this at this point we're still in the moment grip was talking about where.
We don't know which way this is gonna go can Kennedy actually had -- delegate -- Joseph Trippi do his job well enough.
And pull this all right and you guys you know you get off the phone -- guy and it sounds pretty convincing and get off the quality -- -- guy.
Tell illicit columnist on the -- -- liberal renegotiated -- realize.
As we also negotiate through the press in of these different roles.
Had Koppel David Brinkley they're they're anchors journalists are trying to.
Present both sides of this and as a part that sort of if you see a fight and militant that's that's a good little story if there's that -- and contention and was a moment.
In the third or fourth tonight.
When senior -- Hamilton -- and.
Was sent to the Kennedy hotel to talk to the Kennedy people about how all this was -- this on the final and others in the play out bag man.
-- whether Kennedy would come little hall and they would have the famous hands clasped.
-- victory you -- gesture.
Which was unclear that that even that was going to be possible.
And we knew that he was there.
We were looking for him and he appeared on the floor.
And he appeared on the floor in the Florida delegation.
I was nearby and got to microphone with a big ABC flag on it in his face right.
Other correspondents -- immediately on the scene this was the interview of that moment that you wanted to -- My high school classmate Bruce matters -- son of the late senator George -- as the Florida.
Was part of the Florida delegates one of its leaders.
And he stood in the aisle and blocked by competitor.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- They couldn't get themselves.
So everybody takes this interview that I'm conducting its you know -- -- when he can hear.
I'm conducting this interview them and and a -- every camera.
Of every network had to take this -- -- all I guess -- that while they could see their microphones they could pick up the sound but they couldn't get their correspondents really that close.
So I had to -- -- ABC news producers were over the moon and suddenly my stock at least for a few minutes there.
-- Michael I wanna go back to something you mentioned which is -- talking about this story I mean.
People talk about media -- a lot.
But the one -- that I know exists that I am absolutely sure is that exists there is a bias for good compelling stories -- bias exists for drama and not I mean.
We remember and April of this year march of this year all the Republicans are going to a brokered convention at the -- Santorum will never give up and there was a lot of wishful thinking I think in people's mind.
It's -- well it's true I think.
I do remember frank saying Frank Reynolds that.
He didn't think Kennedy had much of a chance to pick I think he he knew that logically.
But you know we're all they are in the room -- and are going to be watching in this.
You know do you wanna hear some somebody just sort of speaking like this I mean it was they were great to hear -- right they were written but they were.
They were great to hear and it was a little hey this is.
It's it is television after all it's television -- people like to -- -- look at this thing is there were these.
Kind of ridiculous.
Test votes that happened throughout I mean from the very first day I mean we're we're Kennedy kept we kept prodding and trying to figure out if we could -- delegates off in this.
How close is where you at any point how close were there we we were caught -- -- quite like there was this from.
We keep all these different rules votes -- it but it won't let me point isn't that it was it there was there was real tension about those boats really didn't matter if no one knew for sure could can be -- some of those women -- or some news out of Kuwait.
So there -- uncertainty and then you have all the way through the uncertainty of -- Kennedy and Carter.
Come together and -- -- that moment never really did ever any nation in a lot of cloudy warm.
But -- they barely ever they got kind of a moment of this awkward and class gesture.
But it was it was clearly not clearly not off the bus and take into this -- -- of meaning meaning people in the Democratic Party who believe it was actually been -- and in the Kennedy camps.
Not not doing the right training and in and not at night joining with Carter the cost him the presidents Reagan and it's true or not whether he would have had.
And I'm curious reading anyway since then parties learned their lesson what they they have contrived and -- range systems in those days the way the people got to these conventions or by being the by being committee met in their states and it was a much less open an egalitarian process and.
Well over the -- -- deleterious solidly democratic rules have been -- biggest rule challenge to Joseph was talking battle.
What's the delegates were back.
But there by the result -- robot to robot rule the big Ed Ben Williams -- proposed this idea that we should on by the delegates the Kennedy people sent that was going to be the test.

On I do think that there is too much association of -- with the idea of austerity.
And then Republicans are gonna have to you morning counter that mean and we had Ryan in in many kids just have for an -- board.
And means editorial board yet since he is the editorial page editor heat from time to time people come -- to discuss issues that they get a sense of them.
And right that yes and you know we had Ryan in there and the -- he frames it is they.
But we have a choice between European austerity in the future.
And it changing things now so that we don't have to go there and I think.
The idea and a lot of -- people very sympathetic to Ryan talk about him and use the word austerity that's not the word they want associated with their got.
Nobody wants austerity which you want.
Is she make small cuts announced that and he's not -- so much cuts has just put yourself one of sustainable trajectory.
So that in the future you don't have to -- draconian cuts like the ones that have Greeks rioting and looting and burning thing.

-- it would part of the reason she killed it is because it was so authentic and it was and it was corny at times and he said things that.
You know we would you know we would think she points she gets to a point in which is a very big as she does it and then political people are always -- he can't.
Point he figures you Clinton you do the Clinton right you can't point and she was pointing in which he defended her husband she said.
You know he is a good man anyway it was -- it was very -- but but what I think maybe it was the fact that it was so genuine.
And I think that and I think that Paul Ryan with his -- doing -- with his numbers with that with the probably off script stop it it.
It's I think it's all that washes away if people.
Connect with him on sort of you know a genuine that is being genuine because I think that that's where President Obama lost a lot of those -- people.

I'm interest and by how well he plays with seniors in Florida and is -- polls indicate well so far out and -- I'm I'm interested by that not necessarily completely surprised his plan exempts them all that.
But I'm interest and I have to think of my grandmother.

He he has that kind of appeal it has that kind of charm people think he knows -- is talking about.
