Just hours away now from the start of the Democratic Convention let's take a look at the latest real clear politics average of the polls.

President Obama governor Mitt Romney in a dead heat for the White House there you see the numbers.

It is a tie at 46.

Virtual -- 46%.

So what does this say about how voters view the president's record at this stage in the campaign.

Let's talk about it with a -- a couple of polling experts Pat Caddell -- a Fox News contributor and former pollster for president Jimmy Carter.

Adam Geller is a pollster for New Jersey governor Chris Christie and founder and CEO.

Of National Research guys thanks for joining us you can help us pick apart some of these numbers.

That real clear politics average.

Well it just shows this race couldn't get any tighter pretty low numbers though for any incumbent and this might be the reason why they -- whole.

Took a poll of likely voters.

And asks are you satisfied with the president's handling of the economy.

Not at all satisfied comes out ahead.

50%.

Not very satisfied at 8%.

That is really going to be issue number one isn't it pat.

Yes it is and you know what you have here is a combination of factors I was listening to -- earlier interview.

The general was doing when the congressman you know I just great bravado to go out there and claim the -- better off than almost four years ago when voters clearly think it is.

Unemployment so overwhelming majorities believe.

That they are not better off you know this issue where you're better offered -- really applies not just the economy or to your personal life.

But also to the country.

And that's where people think we're not making progress.

And they see it you -- -- the decline in real income which Republicans don't use very much but I would.

It's it's a it's a Bellwether.

The problem the depth all these things the president's got a problem if it's his record that's why he's not running on it he -- that's why -- at 46.

He has to keep pressing governor Romney they have to keep arguing to extraneous issues.

That are lesser of importance in the boat calculus like abortion.

Gave rights.

Brought me you know kills people with cancer things like that.

Yeah Adam looking at the -- poll -- he brought it up pat did it.

The hill poll asked likely voters are you in better or worse condition than you were four years ago and according to the numbers.

52%.

Of Americans and again these are likely voters say they are worse off than they were four years ago.

What do you think about that -- split atom.

Well pat is exactly right you know there's an old song lyric that says the stars may -- but the numbers never do.

And this is something that the Obama campaign is is live in every day.

They are trying to.

Deflect attention away from.

Does last four years you know they're not they don't want it to be a referendum there insisting it's a choice.

This is what incumbent campaigns do when they have bad numbers.

They say well look at the other guy and then they're going to spend the next couple of months trying to demonize.

Mitt Romney I would suggest that that's a problem they've spent the entire summer doing that.

And he started out this -- that -- showing up 4646 -- so didn't do many good.

-- but they've got a real damage due to -- -- let's not kid ourselves.

And I don't think Adam is they've done real damage and it's taken Romney of the convention -- -- basically try to patch himself up some.

His favor bulls are still very -- frankly in a normal situation I believe -- the Romney campaign had filled in their own picture.

In in the spring after they secured the nomination on Bane on the Olympics -- what he believed.

He would've come into that convention -- before five points ahead.

Make no mistake about it this is Romney's election to lose.

And it's a dead heat so that encourages the present but having said that I think the -- our hands here because of the fact.

May be Romney's particularly if he brings into elements that so far -- argue with the convention I don't know they're gonna sustain.

Which is to get off Medicare and get ought to health care obamacare which is really unpopular and the second is to build some urgency -- of this campaign.

That in fact we're facing crisis coming and you can't just do the next four years -- -- -- Obama campaign is simply keep pressing the attack.

We will continue to watch these numbers.

-- Adam Geller and Pat Caddell thank you both thank you for having a good.
