-- To fix it what grade would you give yourself so far for doing.
I would say complete.
You know historically after these big financial crises.
-- -- a lot of people are heard dealing with debt or collapse of the housing market.
You know that creates bigger challenges we're seeing -- -- -- in the states around the world.
Europe is going through very difficult.
Parts of Asia even China we're going through a difficult time right now.
And that with President Obama in an interview with a reporter from KK TV.
Which is CBS affiliate out in Colorado Springs and this is our black and I -- Chris -- -- -- my goodness welcome to Charlotte, North Carolina here in the queen city.
As power play rolls -- through week two of the party's national conventions we're here in Charlotte where back there at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
The Democrats are going to get warmed up for a big speech later on in the week by President Obama across town at Bank of America Stadium where the Carolina Panthers -- Democrats are here they're getting pumped up -- site.
But at the same time they know that they have to stay on the attack against Mitt Romney and the -- and the tag yet Mitt Romney.
It's for the exact reason that you just heard in that interview with President Obama which is the answer on the economy.
Incomplete he gave himself a B plus a while ago but.
Democrats have acknowledged the fact that when it comes to making progress on the economy the number one issue -- here they're not there yet.
And they are -- they need a little understanding but they also most importantly need for voters to believe that Mitt -- not an acceptable alternative on that question can they pull it off.
We'll talk about that what else we'll talk about is NASCAR you'll enjoy that designs were talking about it.
We're also gonna talk about how it goes behind the scenes how you get -- -- how you do all your stuff here at the DNC -- we're gonna talk about what Paul Ryan said about Afghanistan.
And how that could actually have some repercussions for their ticket.
We're gonna do all of those things and have a great time doing it.
Can you imagine a better way to start don't even think about it don't even think about whether there's a better way to start.
And with our friends Alice Stewart -- -- who have very conveniently for you.
Warned that the appropriate colors they are color coordinated Alice place for the red team she is the spokeswoman for the Concerned Women for America which is a conservative women's organization.
You may remember her from being the spokeswoman for Rick santorum's presidential campaign.
She's wearing the right color and Debbie dingle.
She is also wearing the right color she is the president of John dangled the dean of the house.
The longest serving member of congress from Michigan.
Ovals we'll take so I'll come on now now look wait a minute we have to do -- -- swimming in the seat okay so the question -- heads.
And Debbie we talked about this many times.
For that that the economy is always the central issue or when we're talking about it -- we heard the question yesterday Republicans were all over this are you better off question.
But in this interview you heard the president essentially say look.
This is not where we wanted to today how does that affect what he talks about and what your party talks.
Back here I think that what people really have been cleared fights and I think that one thing that I was happy about when you think Paul Ryan.
Weekly -- the civil dialogue and I keep hoping that civil dialogue.
People are leaving -- understand what places are they're star -- eight -- -- Ryan budget would do what Detroit with what would happen.
If it weren't -- -- team got elected.
What how would -- impact.
They're lives the day after the election and what would be coming up in the next year and I think that's a very clear choice.
Are we gonna keep that are we where we want to be but let's be honest I am because my daughter we've got -- I have definitely -- it's been really good for me.
I had a Mitt Romney who said let Detroit go bankrupt.
And I had a president who did some very tough stuff but worked with everybody and -- do not read.
I am better -- I think.
Question is an appropriate question given and we got sitting president.
Are people better off is America better off than we were four years ago -- the answer is no and the truth is this election will be a referendum on his election and it will be.
Signing -- -- on the fact that point three million Americans unemployed we've got that GDP that's nominated spot we've -- We've got housing foreclosures through the -- we've got people looking for work in the back then -- -- here is tremendously unpopular and people certainly don't want that into your point in your power my -- the only way Obama will do well that makes it's not about him and his record in the -- -- about someone else so he's gonna continue the negative attacks the way Romney trying to get.
And that's not gonna work.
Well but it wasn't working.
There is certainly clear evidence leading up to the Paul Ryan -- on August 11.
That it was working that you saw Mitt Romney's personal approval dropping dropping dropping he was losing ground in the swing states.
I mean the president's got 63 days to say that Mitt Romney -- bad didn't.
People are gonna want that confidence negative attacks in the big thing is now what about a line in the race for the -- knocked -- the economy.
It's what people are talking about we're gonna have the opportunity now to talk about the -- Ryan plan for middle middle class that includes.
Energy independence that includes making -- that works for America.
Skills include being a champion.
Small business which is what we -- we can't have a president.
He says all the private sector is doing fine if you build the business he didn't -- that it -- all the -- help with Scott -- lines in the -- rein in the -- -- government and very private sector.
Did you talked about now.
Ryan and you both talk about how -- changed the discussion.
The part of the way the wind changed the discussion is for the exact line of attack that you just alluded to.
Which is -- when you look at his budget it's gonna cut this it's gonna do that it's going to be the other thing.
How much you cared about is they -- on.
Barack Obama Joseph Biden Bill Clinton and everybody who's -- Michelle Obama tonight.
All the Democrats are gonna talk here compared -- is there at this point having.
-- -- Good argument against these guys to put forward a positive to say now.
That's not think you have to put.
Forward that -- people have to make the choice about who they think.
It's going to be the person that's going to take it in the right direction protecting jobs are created -- Is it going to be somebody.
-- -- -- -- -- -- Republican policies that is gonna -- tax cuts for the wealthy -- increase taxes to the middle class.
-- game theory clear -- right -- we can expect the same.
Trickle down -- the same economic housing they.
Does this economically that's against -- but my question is what is the thing that the president needs to say that thinking of that and keep moving at least we get it that you protect them that is the fact that what.
Put forth and how he's gonna keep academy -- how it's gonna reduce the budget he's got to talk about that we got to address.
But he's gonna invest in the economy and keep those shots he is creating jobs here -- very clear he's created step -- -- an and that.
So that's forward that's partly that's forward facing somebody violates my or.
Specifics but the fact is all right now either but if you've been around he's not exactly long on specific things that isn't any specific I -- a plan that but the fact is.
We can't have four more years of what we currently have a that but it doesn't work for women doesn't government doesn't work for Americans across country.
With -- with the unemployment the way it is and there's no support for.
Private sector of the continue to grow -- that we can't sustain this -- got sixteen trillion dollar debt.
This country's headed in the wrong direction now it's time to get someone you have business experience that has created jobs and does -- -- -- let free enterprise work did you go there.
-- you were -- then we're gonna move on who.
-- -- -- today I mean I -- it's.
Moving in the right next four years ago I know I'm gonna rock not where I was four years -- and I don't wanna go bad I wanted to -- All right last.
Question and this is the fingers of fallout from the hill today that polls opinion strategies -- for the help.
And big question do.
We've that we -- numbers that we've seen in other things how do you group president handling of the economy and these -- scores of Republicans have been touting for.
Two years they say this is why Mitt Romney can do this or a Republican can do this.
But thought it was very revealing was that -- about I believe it was a 51 to forty does the president deserve to be reelected.
They said no and that's a big number so the question -- is this.
As much as the president -- talk about looking forward.
And I've tried myself and as much as we need to talk about having an adult discussion.
When your upside down like that when people don't think you deserve a second term.
It's sort of what George W.
Bush did this a more intense version of what George W.
Bush did -- John Kerry where you say you man this may be no walk in the in the garden.
But that guy is not acceptable right.
Well that's what the Republicans are going to try to view but I think we.
You know that -- that you are Sally you're just going to be close race it's going to be competitive racing and I think it's more competitive in Latin people -- to say.
But also I also think president Barack Obama's gonna win and I think last week Republican elected Republican Convention that a lot to energize the base.
What is at -- I could look at.
There's a problem and we won't discuss that today with polling in this country and our whole sorry I -- you knew it at anybody can -- -- -- to show anything.
There are some posters that are really doing good -- that I really would use this just another snippet of a number one bit.
I could -- -- -- -- -- giving the other night I don't ruin the fun well I'm I'm Aaron I think.
I only -- obviously doesn't deserve another time but his.
But they below 50% that's -- -- president and the enthusiasm for Romney is much greater than -- Obama and this last two months the enthusiasm is going to be critical.
An hour hearing that the Democrats in the senate coming here and trying to -- and independence which will decide this election.
They're trying to shore up their banks to having them -- they're -- -- -- below that.
Should be able letting your kids that's -- -- -- didn't have a good and it's warriors yeah do everything we can't exactly -- acting as Arctic environment and all right time out ladies we're gonna take a quick break.
One actually before we take a quick break you know we -- there.
You know it's a lot like.
Politics it's NASCAR.
There's Robin is race and then they'd like to get up on each other spender push him off into the -- -- we took a look behind the scenes you take a look at that we'll see on the other side.
Nothing is a bigger part of -- in the Carolinas and NASCAR stock car racing.
For a century almost now a big part.
Of what drives the discussion down in North Carolina and here in Charlotte metro area that's why we're at the NASCAR hall of fame.
That's why both.
Campaigns both candidates do everything they can to try to affiliate themselves with this popular and powerful brand that is so important here in North Carolina.
Up to and including the Romney for president campaign bringing their own stock car.
We're told it actually would run there's no gas and -- I don't think the Secret Service would probably like that inside the perimeter.
But certainly they're doing everything they can to affiliate themselves and associate themselves.
With this now what you remember this.
Stock car racing NASCAR isn't just big in North Carolina being an Ohio.
Big in Pennsylvania all across Rust Belt in Florida guess what they have in Florida Daytona that's a pretty big deal.
So here's the deal Mitt Romney has struggled he's had a bit of a difficult time you remember the incident when he talked about his friends who were NASCAR owners.
These blue collar voters some of them -- Reagan Democrats Clinton Democrats.
The president has struggled with them even worse he's had a tough time connecting with these voters so while there in Charlotte.
Both campaigns I guarantee you are gonna do everything they can't to affiliate themselves.
With this great sport.
Will be back with more after this.
-- And that.
What it looked like when First Lady Michelle Obama took hurt -- Of the convention center here in Charlotte at the Time Warner Cable Arena just across the street.
She went through for her big speech tonight.
He's the keynote -- this evening and she is wants to counterpunch against and Romney who last week gave knocked out lights out speech.
And if anybody can do it especially for this crowd.
It's the First Lady welcome back to a special hour long edition of power play here in the queen city of Charlotte, North Carolina.
So the question is this about political spouses we have two extra good ones we have two really good ones in this round out because.
Michelle Obama is tremendously relatable and attractive figure who does a lot of press.
But in Romney is coming back -- around two in the battle of the spouses who's got the upper hand.
Debbie -- nose and -- -- Alice Stewart knows too but they probably have a slight disagreement on that question.
But let's talk about this first.
-- -- you are -- political spouse.
You've done it you've been to boot camp -- bit more than I want it for the First Lady tonight what are the expectations what are the pressures like forever.
I'm I'm stumbling on its.
I like both.
-- like Kim Romney and I like Michelle Obama stipulate and it really bugged me last week when obvious cheap shots were taken it and run keeping each woman.
Michelle Obama -- decent Smart savvy political woman if she will be a great job.
And I think that what she's got to -- -- just come out again and talk about it.
Put this often -- -- Picture on a pregnant about it which is what it really hit.
But again it's about the future and what that places are.
And they're each Dennis is up for their me and I hate that thing -- just went right into it but we can't let -- It's it's good that somebody does it give it at forty years ago they would be nice -- Michelle Obama -- it it.
Theory it means that should go out there it's a good job -- we'll remind people about what that date and let's not -- -- even.
From communication from -- -- in perspective regardless of your political affiliation for the First Lady tonight.
Did she talk about any policy.
If you talk about that stuff we've heard from and Romney she -- more on politics than we expected she delve deeper into politics she talked about.
Women and politics in there issues.
Four Michelle Obama tonight did she talk about her husband.
How much and that you talk about politics how much of policy.
How much spicy as that we -- see her -- a great picture of her husband might be that her.
-- been a fantastic first -- -- a wonderful wife and great mother and I love seeing her mother in the White House but -- a lot.
And them being well rounded every candidate you need to see in.
Woman advanced with the man and this'll be a great round -- picked -- her.
But clearly she's going to talk about him personally and a father and as a man.
And the love that they have in their relationship which is critical.
But I went back and looked at -- speaks for years ago when she talked a lot about her from her dad and her brother and her background but she also talked about things that the president planes do what.
Important to him and a lot of that yet delivered on so I think first -- -- -- way.
From the policy up that you're staying away from the nuts and bolts of politics and in continuing that question now that as a man and in humanizing -- -- an important part of this.
That -- one thing she's got a brand though about obesity and the obesity.
Crisis I guess you can now say in America.
Is that the -- you want to talk about tonight.
About -- he has done some bad things.
In the White House and -- and nonpolitical way we -- -- to eat better.
He's done a great thing about it urban.
It but hopefully she's done for military families -- the issue she's taken she helped him he's -- all of its air.
Together working for that military family that I think it's a good thing in anybody about six sites that.
How yeah -- around that is the big around that that she's putting out this.
Will be a great platform for her talk about those issues that are critical topic of the city in the and that gardening that's his.
His military families military base in North Carolina they're eating onion you can tell them with the way he -- -- -- -- on both feet and she means that whether you know.
Very passionately in a very genuine so I think it's a great opportunity for heard it.
Simon spotlight on insisted that she -- What she likes doing it doesn't she.
He's CNBC -- real thing I week we have opportunities that other people down they have a platform.
They've got a responsibility.
To use it in Indiana that -- -- Steve -- took part about it -- I I don't know but I think.
You -- that's would you -- -- anyway and it's been heard last week from.
Speaker after speaker you know the president's as a great man he's a good father is that he's a good husband is the bad president.
-- -- -- talk.
Not that bad since you're -- enemy territory we're looking at the last word -- we appreciate you ladies thank you so much for -- -- win this thing really everything that's great -- now look.
It's going to be almost as if you were a delegate to the Democratic National Convention if we're gonna go over and take a look behind the scenes a little something we shot yesterday.
You're gonna get a big kick out of it was -- on the other side to stick around.
You're delegate to the Democratic National Convention where you sit depends on two things.
Electoral politics and personalities.
Over here North Carolina.
The host state they're bound to get a good place because not only are they hosting the convention but also it's -- electorally vote rich Wednesday.
And look over on this side and you -- Delaware and Illinois the home state of Vice President Biden and President Obama there at the right into the podium pretty big deal.
But here in the Time Warner Cable Arena it's a pretty small space and certainly space on the floor is hard to come but so the rest of the slots are for states like Illinois and Virginia.
You see Florida back there these are electorally rich states and what the Democrats want is that on every convention night.
For the cameras to catch cheering delegates from these places that's the whole idea that's what they want to do.
Now let's say you're not in play but let's say you don't have that many electoral votes and you look warhead up there you -- -- West Virginia.
With its five electoral votes up there definitely read Kentucky definitely read Connecticut definitely blew.
These are states that if you're not in play and you don't have that many electoral votes.
You won't have to walk far for the popcorn.
But you're probably not going to be too close to the stage either.
As matter of fact state like West Virginia we had several members of the delegation opt not to come because it wasn't good politics back home.
So that's how you would get your seat at the Democratic National Convention if you were a delegate and will be back with more power play after this so stick around.
One thing you know about folks in Louisiana.
They are resilient.
People in Mississippi.
They know what tough times are like but.
They know that they can bounce back there is enormous faith here enormous strength here.
That was President Obama.
Being very presidential -- of visit down to Louisiana to New Orleans where terrible flooding.
From hurricane -- a left a lot of people in distress.
And he was showing up fatherly helping hand to the folks down there.
And this is power play welcome back to Charlotte where we are rocking the party.
Here in the queen city where the Democrats are.
Having their convention here at the Time Warner Cable Arena and then later on president is going to try to knock it out of the park -- I guess for a touchdown.
Since it's the home of the Carolina Panthers data Bank of America Stadium on Thursday.
And it's a big deal to be the incumbent.
There are a lot of downsides to the president's situation right now when you look at polling and you look at satisfaction with his job.
You look at his handling of the economy people don't like the way that things are.
But they always like when the president looked in command but it looks like he knows what he's going and he can certainly do that very well David Drucker.
Whom you read it roll call -- -- who is very good who do like -- Internet frequently.
And AB Stoddard delight you on the panel on -- report everywhere on the Fox News Channel.
But at the hill is where you read her Internet.
OK guys so here's the question.
We're -- about the poll that AB's paper ad out today.
In the previous segment which was.
People don't think the president deserves a second term they're not sure about Mitt Romney.
But they are gosh darn sure 51 to forty that he -- -- -- among likely voters that he doesn't deserve to be reelected.
How do you use the power of incumbency.
Maybe eight to talk about what what people like about -- without reminding them back that they don't really like how you've done.
Eight objective here this week in Charlotte issue -- percent repackaged re ran the Obama record they have to defend it.
They don't want -- so much and the economy but they certainly are going to stay on his national security accomplishments.
I don't that got resident President Clinton will obviously validate president Obama's economic policies going forward saying it's only half.
-- -- A place it for the shrinking middle class in America that is changing under global into the wind that global economic change and it really.
Is he he is going to pull out all the stops I'm sure we'll hear from military families about.
It helped that mrs.
Obama and doctor Jill Biden the vice president's wife had given them.
You're gonna hear a lot I'm.
As I said about -- about what he's done.
In theaters overseas.
To keep a safe.
That we are they're gonna make the case that we are safer than we were four years ago they're gonna make the case that we're better off that we're not -- 700000 jobs upon.
And -- they are going to rebrand incumbency.
Has its advantages they're going to be able to bring a lot of people out.
To say a lot of Edwards.
-- -- just testified they need -- -- voters but they really need.
Is that they can feel proud again floor I leave those people to give money and they needed to David we show the Internet your cuff links list.
Another look at monogram.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- doesn't do sartorial about her so the question is this.
If he's right.
Incumbency has its advantages but as president comes in to Charlotte as he heads down here after doing sort of -- he's trying to gather momentum.
Coming down here campaigning.
Not only in Louisiana but also in Colorado and other Wednesday.
If he comes to town he's got a lot of baggage in the back Air Force One.
-- and I think when our president.
It is particularly -- is acceptance speech on Thursday.
But what all of the political speech this week that it become prime time television and on the -- list.
Candy if it's not so much can he reignite the Obama magic the -- but can he remind.
Voters about what they liked about him to begin with this idea that he was a new fresh leader.
Who was willingness to do whatever it takes to try and stem the country from going down you know further financial rat hole.
And and can't he kind of project this image.
Look we were in really deep trouble and you know I was able to stop us from going somewhere -- that would have been a whole lot worse.
So stick with me because we are headed in the right direction and I think this is one of the reasons.
Although we see the Obama campaign to pass the police -- -- recover from there we're not better off -- we were four years ago you know screw up that was the truth is there'll their reelection argument has never been about you're better off it's been about.
Where work always is somewhere you want to be.
And even if the other guys can get -- there quicker you're not gonna like what that's all about even if it's like there -- quick caffeine fix.
And we're helping.
You need -- need a break it's.
So as president talked about this if you say.
He -- to get the people who were here in the people who like them.
From around the country Democrats -- -- the enthusiasm gap problem -- -- -- about a ten point in the profit falls back ten points in enthusiasm.
And also of course we'll be.
Talk -- is that involves.
Negative hard negative on president's job approval is about ten points higher than -- positive.
Sort of like what we see with the health care law even if the gap is only this big between yes and no the hardness of the no right -- very tense.
How does he talk to these folks to help close that gap the -- -- -- way that doesn't have.
Moderate middle class folks in Charlotte for example not get a little.
Recap well I think they're going to be on straddling the line not going to overboard on social issues.
But they are gonna stoke the fear.
Of their base about Republican economic policies and why.
He inherited you know -- economy that he is that was built on a house of cards.
And we got a new foundation we're gonna go right back.
So he needs to literally scared about direction of the country that -- that he is the last sort of thing standing between Republicans and shrinking middle class and he he has -- at the same time tout as accomplishment he has to make them proud to be Democrats.
They finally have an advantage on national security -- Is unprecedented.
And they're going to make that very clear that he has in a pragmatic way quiet way strengthen our alliances overseas.
Created a very strong.
Keeping terrorists -- today it's never winning the war on terror.
But keeping us safe they will make those arguments about his record but they will also scare people about the future because that's how you raise money.
And that's how you get voter passion -- You know Sandra -- Will be here she's the Georgetown law students who made the thing about the contraception and the thing about the thing.
Elizabeth Warren will be here.
She of the Cherokee Nation xi who is running against Scott Brown he -- said you didn't build that.
She did she actually she built that she actually built that -- is at that app that takes you billion -- bill that gets you made that happen like that maybe that's an area that.
Guys that you have read it read their columns tomorrow oh and you'll see the collaborative journalism.
As I like to call it when I -- good stuff from Smart people.
For that that even though -- -- says they're gonna focus on that -- they killed they're gonna focus on the health law these things.
Just to the Republicans had to be worried -- Rick Santorum or others that we're from the base of the base got up on stage that's got to be concerned for the Democrats.
I think it's a concern in in states like Ohio and states like.
Non potentially potentially let's say Pennsylvania ended up in play maybe Western Pennsylvania -- looking -- Looking for areas were to be concerned however I would say it is and I said this about the Republican Convention.
With with so much focus on the economy.
And the idea of whether people feel secure enough to pay their own mortgage and make sure their kids have enough -- -- I think what happens is people look at this stuff -- and it's like they kind of take note of it and they move on and I also believe that about national security.
'cause of where we are all those -- great accomplishment for Obama and it doesn't hurt him to have -- edge over Romney.
You know like he reminded me of 1992 people wondered if some unheard of little governor from Arkansas some little state that really didn't matter.
The golf against George H.
Bush on national security.
And the Cold War and all that and people were really concerned about an economy that was a lot better than in recession and it is now itself.
I think for Obama to.
He is this.
And he's sufficiently communicate to people that even if they're offering you a better -- so Calder quicker -- so called.
Actually don't want to go there if that's where we came from so it might take me longer.
It might look a little tougher and it doesn't sound is easy.
But you're gonna -- happy with where we're going and it's going to stick and I think that's really the message that they are trying to communicate between now like they were able.
First of all what I wanna do this -- when I -- apologize to all the are kansans out there for what David just -- you do matter.
We love you a lot are kansans are great it's a wonderful state -- -- today.
It's a beautiful mr.
Clinton was viewed the Ozarks are breathtakingly beautiful yes oh -- you -- Wasn't no it was.
-- as a as an apple Latin American.
I stand in solidarity with you -- candidate in California born here -- exactly god not rolls okay we're gonna take a very quick break and then when we come back we'll talk about that -- debt.
And how that is affecting the discussions that -- -- and that is the -- that the federal government's debt and obligations hurtling them racing towards sixteen trillion dollars.
It's not that big deal to be sixteen vs fifteen -- it's certainly a lot of go.
But there is a psychological barrier there that Republicans are DD.
Giddy about because they think it's a great issue for them in the election.
This power -- welcome back to Charlotte where we are having a -- -- good time.
Here in Charlotte as we get ready for the Democrats to kick off the festivities over the Time Warner Cable Arena.
And it is positively problem we're just rollicking everywhere and eating barbecue it's great.
And I want -- before we get back to our esteemed panel I want to tell you what you're saying.
Here's what flying high in okay see Oklahoma City I assume.
I like the negative attacks how I'll see you going to learn what the real deal is they're sure not gonna tell you.
-- but DSL senior -- don't believe anything any of them say this is probably more accurate I like where you're going with that.
And Joseph Levy wants to know how many of the four million jobs -- Debbie was argument that were created our federal government jobs.
There's been a net loss of jobs on the state and local level on the federal level you're looking at an increase of about a 18090000.
Federal jobs something like that.
So that's what that is all right so David Drucker and AB Stoddard.
We're gonna hear from congressman Jason.
They love to talk about it but I was asking him this question and you'll hear it here in a minute but I was asking him this question.
When you talk about cuts.
You scare people.
People know that the dad is too big they know that a sixty trillion dollar debt is toxic.
But they also we are a country that it feels pretty strongly that we need some.
Lifting right now.
David let's start with you this time.
How does -- how do the Republicans talk about that in a way that doesn't make him sound like they are going to literally throw orphans and widows in the street.
Wrote the protection cannot talk to pollsters about this it's very important to have a positive.
Growth oriented message -- that you talk about jobs and the economy and the size and scope of government is one that we want to focus on.
Road and focus on growth.
You can talk about an increase in tax revenues that are gonna come into the federal government.
And if you talk about protection of he entitlement programs and the things that people depend on -- Medicare it means that you can.
Talk about actually cutting it in a way that is not scary because what you can say is.
It's going broke.
And actually we know the facts bear that out -- some disagreement over which -- would go broke but that bothers people right so you say that I want to.
Change the program in order to preserve it for you.
And your children and grandchildren -- -- old cliche that is that is something that we have seen actually works when it in regard to Medicare.
We've seen it since Ryan was added to Romney's taken they've gone out there aggressively accusing Obama.
Taking 700 billion dollars from Medicare and 718.
-- -- Iraq and in that we are going to.
And preserve it.
And so I think that's how you do it a big.
It's true because it's a -- topic as you say they have put a positive spin on it.
Republicans actually struggled last week to talk about that -- -- o'clock.
That they don't really want to talk because politics -- him.
It's about selling its product taking she's right so it's an awkward spot to be and movement conservatives tellingly it was all -- just.
If they thought that he was gonna get a little off that the economy jobs message that was keeping him at parity with the goals of the president and start talking about.
Obviously I'm reestablishing a path to growth through debt reduction and that haven't talked -- my -- so -- It is an awkward fit for them and are trying to find a way to do it Democrats will remind everybody -- the coming sequestration.
It's set to come online at one point that -- they want me they won't I'm from Louisiana you.
About all of the cuts to the floor and all of the government services that are gonna -- to -- -- that so that's that's that's always a -- I know -- believe the Democrats believe that you can't.
You you have to create growth in order to pay down the debt and Republicans believe that you don't have presidency -- Final word one thing I would say is that in Iowa in particular that get message sells -- and that is a key swing states six electoral votes you can run on.
The debt problem and -- -- it scares the coffee beans that people okay.
I -- at a convention.
Now -- I -- quite quite and AB and her without her Star Trek necklace.
As I thank you bags that I skewed that I struck car this morning and they haven't felt that she has -- fine tiny chiseled that she uses these deadly price we thank you guys so much for coming out letters -- -- -- appreciated Internet love you guys OK so let's take a listen to what congressman -- -- from the great state of you talk.
Had to say and then we'll see on the other side.
And we're here with congressman Jason -- -- you talk.
Who is a top surrogate for Mitt Romney.
And you have for some reason decided to come to where the Democrats are having their convention after spending a week down in Tampa for your own party.
Why are you here.
Just happened Evian town.
It -- it really only hear it right it had to offer perspective you know in this time of rapid response he wanted to be -- rate on the spot.
To quickly add perspective you know between tweets and FaceBook and the Internet and and Fox News and everybody else you've got to be able to respond instantaneously there's always somebody saying some stupid some -- And you want a real to respond immediately to that.
And have you had any luck so far here Dario is that there's -- -- couple incidents with the California delegation in.
But then just be in on all the shows you know most responsible shows they'll have.
On both sides and so you want the other be there.
I've been on a -- of the networks -- the end and just offering a little perspective.
One of the things that you do -- Romney and you do in congress but one of the things that you do in Romulus this talk about the -- your point -- -- debt you.
You and -- -- -- worked together for your all your time in congress talking about this.
In terms of how you talk to people about debt.
How do you talk about a new way that doesn't frighten them as we see like with defense sequestration for example.
We see the full report comes out and says if that money gets cut to million jobs so when you talk about austerity Democrats say you're talking about -- job.
It's well what you have to remember -- since Barack Obama took office until now.
There are 143000.
Additional federal workers on the federal payroll and I've never met anybody from coast to coast is ever come -- -- -- -- Jason Peyton couldn't -- they're all those new employees at the EPA you know an hour really click it.
And that's just never happened and there's a consequence to adding trillions and trillions of dollars to our national debt.
Because not only we paying 600 million dollars a day in interest on our national debt.
But somebody has eventually pay this off.
And when -- thrown so much money out there there's the risk of hyper inflation.
Rising interest rates these that things that'll hurt seniors hit it working Americans.
And and people have to recognize there's a consequences.
To the president -- -- -- trillions of dollars that.
He added hundreds of thousands of employees.
And our situation got worse not better.
Now -- but you're still talking there about something that's prophylactic you're talking about preventing a bad thing from happening in the future.
Is their way for you talk about this about doing good things now that actually create jobs yeah we can do instant you can do things immediately.
Approved the keystone pipeline and focus on energy independence.
Repeal obamacare and make sure that that day one that you know bomb apparently that Romney presidency.
That -- -- every state gets a waiver.
Tax reform these are all things that are pro growth.
Put people back to work.
And don't require -- -- you know federal government.
Spending 24 cents out of every dollar thing about that the federal government -- 24 cents out of every dollar spent in this country -- That's without precedent.
And it's unsustainable.
And every time we go to spend money we got to remember.
We got to go to the Chinese to borrow it and that's just not that's not that's not who we are sports leagues how much are you -- -- how long are you here I'm here through Thursday.
And and then gosh you know to sixty days sprint to the finish line so.
Are you guys hearing any rain dances on the roof for the president's speech on Thursday you can admitted if -- -- it.
Without woodwork and -- -- now we're not doing anything like that that.
I remember being back you know in in Iowa and Florida and those.
Back in January where wasn't quite so evident that that Mitt Romney was going to be that Republican nominee.
Now as we get to the finish line I just -- to get everybody up off their -- And and get them making a difference because if everything's on the line.
Congressman Jason -- -- we thank you very much.
From the great state of you talk.
And we will be back with more raw Internet political excellence after this break so stick around.
Agree with Tony fourteen time line -- where we have some differences of opinion.
Our political timetables for troop size.
We feel that our commanders in the theater ought to have the resources they need especially throughout the fighting season.
To make sure that the counterinsurgency.
Are done with the amount of troops that are needed to see the job through -- safely as possible but we do agree with -- fourteen timeline.
That with congressman Paul Ryan republic and vice presidential nominee.
Saying that he agrees with the president's strategy on Afghanistan.
And this is our flag and foreign policies -- -- -- our previous segment has not intruded too much.
-- the discussion.
But all right when asked about it on that CBS this morning.
With Charlie Rose and whatnot.
Said -- We didn't like the way he did it but now that it's done we're gonna stick with that timeline.
So let's talk about whether or not that actually matters is anybody gonna talk about.
Foreign policy at all in this cycle certainly you'll expect to hear that the Time Warner Cable Arena here in Charlotte.
Bit about that is Democrats come -- -- out.
The death of that one guy that everybody hated so much there we'll talk about that they will talk about the drawdown in Iraq but.
The president's Afghanistan policy not very popular and now Paul -- says that Mitt Romney has the same -- -- You know crystal penis you like this the fairness and you know why you let -- to finish because he.
In everything that we do we try to find any connection to West Virginia possible -- -- and the bio point that we like to highlight.
Where Chris is that your former chief of staff.
To -- -- mentioned senator from junior senator from West Virginia.
And and DC.
We will find Brad Blake -- -- you out there.
Well I don't hear -- you -- behind here but that that but I he's there he's there I am here I am held.
-- -- Who we Chris now what I asked -- -- Chris why he's he hates America so much.
Yeah we'll get to that Baghdad we've got time to get to all of those but we want to make sure that it at that you know the red Blake -- Aside from being a friend of this Internet telecast.
And aside from being a professor.
At the venerated and -- mobile Georgetown university of standards.
Quite so is.
He's a former senior advisor.
To president George W.
Bush served president George H.
He is a Republican -- -- -- true red Republicans.
And we love this the F Brad welcome remotely near Charlotte.
OK so Chris.
Here's the question.
President -- president Obama's Afghanistan policy stinks with voters they do not like it.
They don't like.
They think that he's great that they kill that guy they think it's great that we're getting out of Iraq but they think that this logo draw down in Afghanistan -- How do Democrats.
Make Paul Ryan pay the price for that without.
Making the president that -- -- Lot you know -- I think there's exhaustion that.
Yeah that's that's why I don't like it I think they they wanna kind of -- But when you look I think what the president is done in terms of him killing bin Laden.
-- you know he's got an amazing job on terrorism I don't think Republicans disagree with that it took him -- dismantling -- Qaeda.
And then in terms of drawing down and came in withdrawing from Iraq.
Iraq seems a bit by all file we're not covering -- anymore right it's -- -- seems to be moving forward.
Right they are killing a model I mean yeah but it's you know it's relatively stable.
Mean you don't see you don't see that relative to Syria as well Posey and that's about -- I think.
So in terms of Afghanistan.
I don't think it's going to be a top issue right here -- -- into the top issue.
In this election by it's going to be the economy.
And I think we're riding it.
Ryan basically I think he's -- it doesn't wanna be out there saying what we -- extend his work that's not a good decision to have Brad let's let's talk to you about.
What you know would be less popular than a timetable -- brought that would be extension would be -- ramping up right.
Sure absolutely and I think what Romney has to do in the next few weeks.
Is address foreign policy in a manner that's contemporaneous.
-- hit with a debates they're coming up.
And my suggestion is he'd be in New York City for the UN general assembly which take place a couple weeks and not see foreign policy.
To the president I think he should make a major address before the president addresses the UN GA at the appropriate forum in New York.
And he should also use that time in New York.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And also meeting foreign leaders.
Close to the debate.
Once in advance man always advance -- you cannot get it out of their blood that's exactly he knows where this stuff is.
For here endemic it if you're in Democrat -- -- -- Charlotte.
Which is at least -- this week.
-- president's policy is particularly -- popular.
With his base he has a base problem when it comes to his foreign policy George W.
When he was -- a difficult reelection in 2004 at least knew that his base was behind him on the central foreign policy issue which was the Iraq War.
Four Democrats they're not as enthusiastic how does -- talk about the things that you described in a way that's appealing to voters in swing states without making these people cranky and.
Listen I think he needs to be very direct about here's here's the situation we aired in terms -- policy right in Iraq.
Right and also in terms of dealing with that the terrorist threat.
Addressed the positives in terms the college has -- Laden's head right right right out of Iraq.
Afghanistan we're trying Darren.
I think that's it as strong enough case and then you -- to wit what this election is going to be about you've got to focus on the economy got to focus on those top issues.
And you have to acknowledge I don't think you wanna make the mistake of Romney made.
In his in his speech which is -- acknowledge.
Afghanistan were or -- thanked the soldiers and the truth that I habitat I think -- -- -- -- being tapped out you know acknowledges its significance obviously think the troops.
And then and then move on to what voters are focused.
Tell bombs and good tonight and I think maybe later they'll just have a seven Laden's bloody tunic -- down the path from the rafters during the president's speech.
Rat holed out a second because I am told that John Roberts.
Whom you love -- and that is available to us now.
That he is on the floor over there with a preview of the one of the keynote speakers at the convention brother Robert are you doing.
I'm guess I'm I'm in the second floor -- up the floor for a second four.
Jon Lester it's the Internet.
-- on Castro would be 37 year old mayor of San Antonio.
Is tonight's keynote speaker it's a very interesting pick because first of all on like Chris Christie.
He's not really an attack -- he's more of a pragmatic politician considers himself to be very thoughtful.
Did not -- for fifty years have been very self soft spoken.
As well but he has a very interest in family story.
That he's going to tell tonight because of the made America's story -- -- grandmother came over from Mexico.
She was in elementary school Chris dropped out of elementary school took a number of odd jobs baby -- housecleaning that sort of thing.
So that her daughter Rosie Castro would one day be able to grow up in America.
And have a better chance of life than she did.
Rosie Castro gave birth to twin sons identical twins -- -- -- and Joaquin Joaquin Castro.
Is -- in the state legislature Texas right now he's running for congress this year.
And -- young Castro first became a member of the City Council in San Antonio back in 2001.
Ran for mayor unsuccessfully 2005 but did win an airship.
In 2009 and won by 82% landslide.
In 2011 now a lot of people are saying.
This guy an unknown politician that -- seems to be on a stellar career track.
Becoming the keynote speaker here and point well echoes of 2004.
When and little known state senator Barack Obama.
Gave the keynote address at the Democratic Convention in Boston so a lot of people Chris at this point have a lot of big plans -- with a lot of big hopes for -- -- -- John -- are they may have you on the second level but you are all first leveled us brother we thank you for being with us.
-- I could jockey Chris watch out for tonight it could launch another big political career.
Very good very good okay Brad -- the question for you as.
Know that they're gonna do well with Hispanic voters.
And the reason mayor Castro is there.
Tonight is to remind them look we're the party that gave you the first black president.
And we're gonna be the party eventually that gives you the first Hispanic president.
The Republicans -- a big deal a big deal about diversity and inclusiveness.
But the Democrats.
Obviously have the upper hand on the situation right.
They do but let's face it the Democrats this week you're gonna try an outlet -- know the GOP the fact is we should be celebrating.
All that all that there are great Latino leaders in the Republican and Democratic Party.
Marco Rubio and governor Martinez gave great speeches and they're the future of the Republican Party just like Castro may be the future of the Democratic Party.
But we shouldn't.
Latino should be knocking each other down they should be building each other up and the fact is.
That Latinos under the democratic president they supported are hurting almost double the national average in unemployment.
Pop -- Obama promised immigration reform.
As as a candidate and as president he hadn't delivered for that either so Latinos have to go back.
And realized what was promised and what was delivered and -- the president they supported.
They are hurting more than the average American.
Chris the question first question is how come there's no love for the -- how come nobody talks about the first -- president this is not there right yet it's.
Is -- tragedy is a tragedy out exactly it would.
Abortion totally -- great tragedy unorthodox I agree at all I had to go there I if I can only going to talk action against let him Michael you got out.
Now the for your party.
The name of the game the magic number is 60%.
When it comes to Hispanic voters if they can keep 60% or more they need to do.
Rest 60% nationally and do it better answers Wednesday.
You guys got -- there you -- out -- in the -- I mean.
Every general election and you know Brad knows just -- he's -- this stuff right it's a demographic -- -- each side trying to figure out.
How much of yesterday percentage got to win -- -- key demographic.
If Hispanics and it's in this sixty to 65 -- right -- what the other night demographics.
Turn out this.
If the Republicans can't break.
I would say high thirties at least they're gonna have a very tough night.
Because they've been demographic shift key battlegrounds right especially when you're talking about Florida.
Colorado and even in some other -- consider -- you know.
I -- -- you know we're kind of red.
Traditionally that Virginia Virginia right rating them by -- Salvador and -- Houston to a huge demand obviously it's growing very -- facts right so.
I think the problem with -- Republicans is and you've seen this they have I think some rising you know.
Potential store down the road market -- -- it -- would admit that they've got some -- the problem -- -- policies are wrong.
Was told Brad talked about immigration reform -- let's be honest the problem was the reason we haven't had immigration reform even at -- his former -- is former bosses tried it and.
Public outcome progress party alive that I know that I bashing did not bush bashing it if I know you want a bush spends a spate of bad -- Obama I think well yeah.
Everywhere anyway on -- for -- here Brad.
A bomb at a democratic.
Congress -- two years with a high majorities and he didn't touch immigration reform and the reason why didn't do it is because the Democrats on the back off.
So everything he promised to the candidate has not come to fruition as they break that.
Brad -- at least let listen let's be elicit genuine about right an honest about it you cannot tell me that Republicans have been partners in trying to get immigration reform.
-- that is just -- that we would not true look at look at what you gonna run the tables on the public getting literally every year.
Look at McCain and Graham running away from immigration reform and the President Clinton is credited to the DREAM Act but -- -- executive order but.
But to -- point that was not something that the president undertook in his first few years -- -- other things.
In and I'm not saying that it wouldn't it was the wrong thing to do on this thing.
He put other -- in the train the list where he got in the race I mean I ran out of time I was I always appreciate when when Republicans like ride.
Suggest the president should've done war that the first two years right but he had a -- -- -- crisis the edit the -- Any health care situation in crisis now you have Al-Jazeera English president created to -- -- -- Elway had to -- it dealt with that he would have had to deal with that song title and artist.
-- you get the last word because you're sitting in an air conditioned studio a lot.
We're gonna mop ourselves down the go ahead -- you YouTube today you can get your side.
-- Chris let's get real the president ruled out of ideology instead of reality he created a crisis on health -- when we had an honest to goodness crisis on the economy.
That was a choice he made and now he's gonna have to pay for bad choices and bad judge.
Apple actually that judgment that basically was a result of Republican policies that were handed to them that a crisis that was handed and I think you'd be honest to admit that.
That is the reality I -- the latest on his home turf.
Apple Bob we -- -- gallery like a -- right exactly like your -- -- I haven't had great weak credit appreciate you Brad.
Stay cool up in DC we thank you.
-- -- OK guys we got to go.
We just have to go because they won't let us stay here any longer the kicking it out.
But we will be back tomorrow we will have a word from Charles tomorrow which yeah I know you are sorely missing but we will back for another hour.
-- -- -- -- Super special power play which you'll love -- we'll -- -- same time tomorrow have a great day we'll see that.
