I sort of begin by saying.
How much regret that were not all gathering together at one place to deliver.
My acceptance speech -- tonight.
Felt it it's obviously -- more before to leg out what are the stakes in this -- what my vision for the future is.
In the excerpts that are put out and I hear the president's gonna report on the promises he made.
And how he has performed -- the promises I'd love to watch it.
But -- it's another series of new promises that he's not gonna keep I have no interest in saying it.
And the American people deserve to know why he did not keep his promises.
They round -- -- his own preview of president Obama's speech tonight first we'll hear from the vice president that then we will hear from President Obama we have received some excerpts from the Obama campaign.
Among them this.
I won't pretend the path I'm offering -- quick or easy I never have you -- elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear you elected me to tell you the truth and the truth this it will.
Take more than a few years.
For us to solve challenges that have built up over decades he will we're told get specific about manufacturing energy education national security.
And the deficit we're back with the panel Steve your thoughts you look at these excerpts of what the president has to do yeah I'm I'm very struck by the specificity.
We have reduced the deficit by more than -- -- over the next decade support 600000 natural gas cap things of this -- with very specific numbers attention.
I think those are basically worthless and I think this president in particular will have a hard time convincing people.
-- take -- seriously when he makes the when he makes those promises when he makes those pledges.
-- -- This is the guy who came into office and -- unemployment would be under 8% and it's you know eight point 3% to be five point 6% now he said he cut the deficit and he hasn't come close to that -- to deal with entitlements kind dead in his first month he never has helped.
Almost four years and what is -- the people are gonna make.
-- stop and say.
Now -- -- While they Obama campaign.
Senior -- today -- that this is not going to be about magic about recapturing the magic of 2000.
2000.
-- it is going to be about laying the path forward.
The question is ten heat.
Fire people up with that he's delivered more than fifty speeches on health care during that.
Before the vote he's gonna have to fire people -- I mean that's what this convention is about I think the other speakers have made the delegates here very enthusiastic and we'll see how much help.
It doesn't voters outside the hall.
But you know these are listed as operational goals it's different than saying I'm gonna pass comprehensive immigration reform and actually surprised immigration -- -- -- speech I'd be surprised -- we didn't hear about it.
Tonight.
You know it's one thing to -- to reduce the deficit by more than four trillion over the next decade which by the way is -- -- Simpson does do.
Not deficit that even if he were relative -- -- we need to explain how he's gonna do that.
You know because people have heard these kind of goals before I don't think he needs to -- the state of the union speech.
With laundry list of policies but he has to get specific people need -- clear idea of what the second term.
With him would be -- It's worth noting that these are goals these are promises he's in a pledge this season he's not saying this is gonna happen into the cities -- have -- is his goals.
Well.
What's that or -- the other thing I'd say it is notable about this we heard this and interestingly for the Republicans they kept saying we can't solve our problems this can be done America can be turned around.
That's an appropriate message for -- out party trying to get in.
But with -- disillusioned -- -- wondering if if if the problem could be solved it's quite another.
For an incumbent president after four years of often have to say heart problems can be solved that the implication that is -- -- they have not been hard challenges can be met obviously they have not been.
The -- -- we are maybe harder but it leads to a better but what does he mean by that is going to be you mean it's going to be you know as difficult -- in the list for years who's gonna vote for that.
Bright and -- to your point about bringing down deficit in the debt overall.
Republicans are putting out specific things that when he says four trillion dollars in deficit repression.
Is from spending tricks and and different maneuvers authorities in -- war yet.
There already -- Putting everybody at this speech will write and remember he's he's done this before I mean the president -- didn't embrace and symbols fully but but river when he put out his 2012 budget.
He had a chorus of critics including many friendly voices like -- Milbank the Washington Post.
Who excoriated.
The president for not being serious not putting out a serious -- he is yet to deal with these issues in a serious way.
I don't expect to -- people will believe him when he says he's going to -- His budget was voted down unanimously in the senate and the house and the senate has brought up a new budget for three years really.
From -- I guess the question is after all of this time.
Would something that doesn't really have teeth and.
Well I don't think it would pass but the other thing is you know Mitt Romney did give the president opening because he wasn't specific he didn't put a lot of meat on the bones in Tampa he was pretty broad and general about his own goals this is an opportunity for the president to go big.
Can be -- it seems like from these excerpts of -- choosing to play it safe.
-- was criticized for the same thing and I think he'll be leaving coming on the table if that's all there.
But she'll be shorter than President Clinton -- No well I can't effectively start on -- -- until that final thoughts after.
