Our government should work.

For us not against us.

It should help us not hurt us.

It should ensure opportunity.

Not just for those with the most money and influence but for every American who's willing to work.

And that with President Obama in the salad day in Denver and through that today.

At Mile High Stadium when he had the whole country it seemed like eating out of the palm of his hand.

And this is power play and I -- Chris tire wall.

And as Lou -- said.

You'll never find another love like mine and that's what it's like for Barack Obama as he rolled into Charlotte.

He can't have it the same way he can't have it the same way that was in Denver because he's not outside he's not the new thing.

He's been around for four years people have -- -- give literally.

Hundreds of speeches and use these same words over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

So.

What did he do tonight with his big speech to -- this election.

And try and get.

The Republican nominee Mitt Romney off his -- he needs to shake him off his tail and he needs to get some space what does he do tonight.

-- that himself up for the home stretch.

We will talk about that.

We'll talk about the big dog Bill Clinton and what he talked about.

We will talk about.

All sorts of things the democratic platform we're gonna do it that we have a special another special hour long episode of power play.

From here in Charlotte outside the Time Warner Cable Arena.

You're going to love it I can feel that the light emanating off of you even now.

Prepare to be more delighted.

Charlie -- of The Washington Times is back but making I believe your power play debut.

OK -- in the fight you reader real clear politics you -- all over Fox News and all over cable television well.

The Internet -- you soon.

We are going now this is upscale this is not the usual Charlie and -- got to deal.

OK so the question is this.

-- -- and we'll start with you.

I was thinking about this morning Barack Obama.

I've heard him talk more than almost any human being.

Ever in my life he gave 56 speeches about the health care -- all the good run.

I get the job done I get the job done but I did not given the opportunity.

But.

Barack Obama hasn't said much -- lately.

And I'm starting to feel for like during the healthier than we -- this 50s60s that I heard it 56 times.

What does he do tonight to get Americans pay attention and listen to him.

First I think -- talk a lot about being -- -- Yeah the Obama campaign.

Knows that there is that -- campaign created an opening for them because -- Ronnie did not talk about that aspect of the job.

At all and really nobody else did except for John McCain but his message was.

We can't talisman and the defense budget.

So.

And -- some of Obama's advisors they are saying look we have been adding more.

We know that we have to push the fact that he had -- -- national security perspective and he has been in charge of the military -- primarily that he killed that guy.

We'll hear a lot about adding Deval Patrick that was part of his big -- on Monday night.

It is the president was winding down in the lineup and then ended the war in Iraq and got -- -- -- on a big -- but I have.

Suggested that maybe the thing to do is to have the bloody tunic of Osama bin Laden lowered down.

From the rafters and come down behind -- -- -- that would inspire a lot of patriot I think people.

-- really what he -- -- all right so Charlie.

The deal.

With the president.

Is that.

He needs to.

Well let me put more simply.

Ronald Reagan was a great speech giver could -- was a great speech giver.

Bill Clinton can give a good speech I'm -- sharply as is always good wafting away on the winds -- -- but they were good speech givers.

Not just because they had to get themselves but in Reagan's case especially -- a great speechwriter Peggy Noonan could write a hell of a good speech.

And it would speak with one voice there's something about Obama's -- -- -- cut and paste it feels like there's a lot of control -- Control be.

That goes on that what here's our national security part here's this part that if -- -- something that gets people more stirred up instead of this usual sectional work.

And the other thing thing about Reagan.

Bill Clinton is that they were that wonderful speech giver totally different way to totally different way Bill Clinton and can do a ball below them.

You know professor.

Lecture hall -- I think and you'd never realized that and -- Obama that's it it's just like.

My your board needed data but but Clinton does that and he's like the crowd will.

There -- a -- like I'd like.

You know you talk about 10% of Medicaid doing this that and that their camera -- the audience the audience like yeah -- -- that -- that.

I -- say that that they -- you know I know you haven't made -- this video I don't think you'll go down in your lap it up and there and obviously it exactly right that you know he's probably going to go very much into the -- -- things but.

It's not a winning message in this election because I didn't I hated that guy yet another notebook -- that's great that that'll be -- definitely several beautiful.

But the problem is that it's.

And that's what what that is that's what people need be that's what he needs to do to win on and book but I think that that that that that -- -- That Bill Clinton gave last night will only make things more difficult broke.

Tonight -- Obama is -- really competitive guy right they had.

Every Tuesday night -- had an even better Wednesday night because Bill Clinton was so epic.

Business guy you want to be reelected.

He got Bill Clinton and I bring it -- -- He would never failed to deliver a better speak about a quiet there anything Obama's good at doing it exceeding expectations in the speech -- -- experienced some some puzzlement because you're a few journalists I respect very much -- I read frequently.

But I'm trying to think of the last.

The -- speech that the president get it.

I don't feel right and it.

But in the past as we've gone through his political career right he does -- -- -- didn't have been a while I think that suggest that there is now something new for him again.

-- point you both do.

The president's speech that he -- whether the kick off for the second phase of his -- Which was the speech to congress joint session of congress.

Jobs legislation passed this bill today I -- -- and nobody remembers if it was boring and it didn't have anything and it and it was it was it was that case.

Retread of all of these other things when Obama was hot in 2008.

There was a freshness there was -- -- -- to it.

Doesn't he seem a little stupidity and I'm sure.

Is -- an environment he's the campaign here he is back in his -- up.

There were flat quietly the.

Don't think it -- be I think I mean I feel like and I know that you about how he would either but they've.

But I feel like that all happened -- me and I don't think that I have to do it in a very long I don't think.

If he did that that gets done wouldn't get done and the things that the delegates on and I was a marvelous speech and -- but well delivered but.

-- -- -- But what was -- -- it was biographical that would like why did you are reportedly reached between the Atlanta.

Can he get away with that -- when he hit that I love myself more now than I did -- -- no.

-- are away without but I don't think that he.

Right so as the -- he really talking to tonight.

And that's the question you know Mitt Romney the Republicans were very message discipline to Tampa last week they said almost nothing.

They very successfully squelched.

Talking like Rick Santorum I think they just like bit like they had let him run through the convention floor for a minute Newt Gingrich they had in -- trailer out back teaching a class.

Very message discipline.

All biographical about Romney leading you know he is not a dog torturing vampire.

For a week.

This week has been confused.

In a lot of ways there have been -- -- god.

Well they didn't move guy don't specifically.

Okay would die with the that they believe that they -- very regularly away any dual boot procedural move procedural move mr.

hurt.

My mother heard that we've -- well you know that -- that's how it goes sometimes but be.

The president do the Republicans were very clearly talking to.

Undecided voters they're talking they were actually quite good -- more specific group.

Female undecided voters in the collar -- it's Wednesday that was -- that was a hundred million dollar convention put on for 20000 people basically.

So the question is.

What -- Obama talking to tonight.

May I add start over I think -- -- thank you but I've heard a lot of social issues -- that's what I mean everyone at every speaker I've lived here and that president.

Support essentially game right right you can't marry whoever you love that's won an edit thing it's a woman's right to every speaker has real that would I think the marriage part.

As it is a new thing we weren't hearing that.

-- that all based start putting Sondra -- on in prime time she came on I thought.

But why are they having this woman on now why are they doing that Elizabeth Warren giving Elizabeth what that would be giving Sandra locked in Elizabeth Warren those kind of spots.

Those are candidates that in -- are not in it but individuals who -- the base.

But are not good to sell until -- got the Ohio and so that he can do that well -- obviously would you want to read it is.

This group.

Women voters that all the whole thing -- -- elected but I I think that they've -- I think they've done a very poor job with.

Because people like -- was and if you look at that place it's.

It's about how do we get a ruling out you might hear more plot you know this is it.

I mean it was Clinton's big -- We don't go on with it not Italy.

And edit it edit it it was -- it was from.

Designed to build -- the narrowest smallest little sliver of their -- and I don't CNN Ed doesn't go beyond what they did.

Aren't going to campaigns with women's -- -- -- -- that he isn't in air at the other thing that I hear a lot.

Trying to get.

Some little additional heat of the working class.

At every speed car starts out with -- out at -- right of there upgrade right.

And then -- -- the American dream they've risen in baton fastball and President Obama know that.

Kind of thing he's playing partners -- now.

Down -- down and real America.

They would call that -- -- that this is -- and this has been the -- -- -- Olympics.

Down here as everybody was.

Being born in a log cabin they built with the round today.

-- I haven't helped -- I -- expect that I good.

Your life was really terrible man I'm sorry about that -- you thank you very much and we hope that you'll come back what will find a better sparring partner for you we appreciate you being with -- -- Okay.

We're gonna take a quick break but when we come back we're gonna talk about.

Why we we're talking about the democratic platform yesterday what the heck is that the -- around.

Acquired the two thirds vote in the affirmative.

All those delegates in favor say -- All those delegates -- proposal saying no.

-- -- In the opinion of the youth let me do that again.

All of those delegates.

In favor say I.

Although delegates opposed say no.

Or.

I am.

I guess.

They're getting.

I'll do that one more time.

All those delegates in favor say -- -- those delegates opposed say no.

In the opinion of the chair two thirds of voted in the affirmative the motion -- -- -- -- And the left arm has been amended is shown on the screen.

And that was -- Angeles mayor Antonio -- growth doing it wrong.

And this -- our flag welcome back to Charlotte where inside the Time Warner Cable Arena yesterday.

The Democrats had a procedural -- The mayor of Los Angeles was trying to get.

The platform amended at the request of the president and the campaign to change language that will.

Deemed offensive act related to a lot of Jewish American voters and Q a lot Christian.

So because they've admitted the word god.

From the platform and also they had struck dabbling with that that Jerusalem.

Is it should be the cat and unified capital of Israel.

And it was that kind of stepped on the democrats' day yesterday because.

They first said it wasn't a big deal and they didn't care and then they did the hurry up to try to fix it before it got out of control.

And when they did it he went to the convention hall.

Bill Gross who went to the convention hall and the two co chairs.

Of the convention that's Ohio governor Ted -- -- And it's also.

Cory Booker -- guy.

Mayor of Newark, New Jersey.

And today.

The Obama campaign -- that thing that they made the mistake that it's their fault that even the president signed off on the platform it was their ball.

So that's where we are.

Now all.

How this plays out in the future we don't know but it certainly is going to have some conflict that's gonna have a little -- we go down the campaign trail.

All right so that having all -- said it ended old business being taken care that they care for new business we had a fun time yesterday.

Talking to the two top -- for the Republican and democratic parties so let's take a look.

At that.

Here we are with the top two huge lists in the name of the politics game and that's Brentwood house he is communications director -- Democratic National Committee Sean Spicer.

Who's wearing the wrong color tie.

From the Republican National Committee.

And you.

Thrill you delight to be achieved their interactions on Fox News Channel frequently.

But we should point out that these are these people are cordial.

They can talk to each of the stood here for a few moments and not there'd been no violence is broken it's not right now again.

I credit both of you OK so a lot of police officers I don't like getting hit that back directly.

They've only been makes twice.

So the question.

Let's start with you -- yeah this is your party and it's also your home state Wright of North Carolina.

All right so.

One of the things that people are talking about.

Right now is.

Black pastors reluctance because on CBC than black pastors out there and talking about social issues in the democratic platform right some rocks and their -- about it.

About what went in the platform in prison on gay marriage is that a problem if that's admit I.

Think that's -- -- -- -- -- significant -- -- -- -- -- the country is moving in the direction -- the Republican -- that the -- moving in the direction to extend rights to more people.

And to protect women's rights and that -- GBT rights.

And and so I don't I don't think it's a problem look.

This election is not really going to be about those -- anyway this election's going to be about the economy who has the best plan to -- the middle class forward.

Mr.

Romney's plan is go back to the things that the -- the economy again with the president has different -- that's what this election -- be about.

You but I think you'd see a lot in the past -- the black.

Black pastors but from churches he encounters another.

Delivered outrageous thing that we -- when you take god out of the platform -- -- -- you have to question why would you do that.

But more importantly specifically in North Carolina it's -- I don't know it's going to be -- -- the factor because.

We're up here where I think community North Carolina off the board I think as soon as they collapse -- from here is probably the last time BC national prominent Democrat.

Back you know I ran a very.

That's right now there anywhere they understand grant credits from North Carolina so that is actually that your paycheck until that fast from Columbus -- Respond -- -- -- -- real quick for you know first of all this is this the phony issue this issue about about on the platform.

You know that we have faith we have faith mentioned eleven times in the platform the platform mentioned.

God given talent agency in 2000 and tell us on the economy to intersect in a section on the economy but let me take up North Carolina.

Mitt Romney he spent millions of dollars North Carolina is outside it's impacted millions of dollars North Carolina and he hasn't shown any given day talk about North Carolina.

These guys get back ten points it's -- or they're behind.

And so North Carolina.

Was razor thin in in 2002008.

Of the razor -- again this dimensions and -- you brought -- you prepared to give me.

Rhode Island competitive just to go back against him.

Now I think that that might be a little more talented enough to resent the -- -- people like me bird islands with a vampire babies die you know they had governor and McCain kept hearing.

He's got a second worst job creation -- country we should point out Lincoln -- used to be Republican senator.

And tactically naive in -- -- -- yeah aren't yet and I'm sure everyone's Republicans will like it not in the.

In this is where the Republican guards on the right if you're if you were Republican or look at moderate views they don't -- -- -- they -- we can take the out party.

They -- Charlie Crist out of the party now wait a minute they don't wanna have -- you can have a -- You know why you -- -- right you know what have you got anyone in return you don't want anything to do with Republicans.

Who might take a balanced approach the point deficit jobs -- the only not balanced you only want Republicans who want to repeal of instruction that says I'm the only hope I have yeah.

The only reason you haven't we -- -- second what's happening in the country it because your job record so much worse than is that it actually looks good -- Well I didn't obviously know about being that you're dead last job creation of 47 if you doctors and when -- government -- it's in -- time when the economy is what people wanna talk about the guy that was heard from the bottom snob person you like over the fifty clearance that gave -- Ronnie became governor of Massachusetts.

Massachusetts ranked 51 and job creation behind every -- in the district Monday.

The -- he left office it was ranked thirty -- -- because that's called moving.

-- -- -- or hear his four year record and it was 47 that -- you don't dispute that.

But what you wanna do that you want to say.

Mitt Romney should be elected president because he was thirtieth at a fifty.

Then you should take that message to voters perhaps in -- -- at the convention -- I had -- -- the thirtieth out of the message it electric wind.

To 34 years.

That's not a bad record when I went when -- added to the back of the turnaround the Salt Lake City Olympics.

He had hugely successful that an angry that -- -- -- it will go to you could turn it around that the tax.

Pairs made you one thing I could not turn it around I could barely get to this interview to hello hello -- look right here's a question that money -- President Obama was beaten Romney -- -- for a long time.

In the long primary season to lay it out and it to good effect.

I -- that for the Bryant yankees governor Romney's favorability suck you saw that sort of slip and he's had.

-- come back.

And he -- to split it amounted -- took -- and his convention looking good now he's got all that Dag -- money that he was -- for the general election and it looks like there could be an imbalance as well.

-- -- -- weeks that prolonged if you take the money that Romney.

If you take the super pac money they assume that some money you have that you their campaigns we've -- to have a super.

Well we have we don't have this -- -- everyone knows instantly.

We're going to be vastly outspent but like I said we've been vastly out Sean John likes that we've we've been asked that we've been vastly -- bit.

For for a few months now and Mitt Romney is down in every battleground state.

He's down nationally.

Where the results in all lighting -- I abundantly clear that it is not about -- about it and I think we're running North Carolina were up in Florida where opt in Ohio and end up in Iowa came out of it for granted down a point at Connecticut and Kentucky and America let me look not just.

Head to head polls because in a lot of the -- program -- -- we will ought to look in the head and I'm -- look at him that's not saying I'm glad to look.

Are you ready yet to hear who -- -- You're not writing -- reading these.

We are often several battleground state you're -- happy to look at -- actress that what I love about beyond that.

Is when you look at.

The intensity of our voters enthusiastic.

Our voters are fired up ready to get to the polls you would it take to change direction on the flip side the level of intensity enthusiasm on their side is not where it should be.

Going into there's not -- this is evidence that the president eligibility is going down it Romney's going up.

I think all the trend lines that we see -- you -- direction we're.

Very Alex except the polls -- -- behind every battleground -- in behind actually so if that's the true plunging by.

Don't have a lot of out of -- Florida's about a lot of hidden patterns that were hit lisle and Hahn 4847.

Registered voters in the CNN poll on Thursday.

President heads to big speech.

A big one in his career.

And what is it that he needs to do on Thursday to make it stick and come out your equipment well I think it is one thing you can be sure.

Is that when people wake up Friday morning and they will be able to say -- -- That's his rationale for a second term.

When people that Friday morning Tampa there were there were pundits even.

Even bill -- that this on fox -- this weekend said.

On the -- -- -- a rationale for why he should be president.

That's what that's what Barack Obama do you -- out -- rationale to talk about where we were well we're we've come in to talk about -- I think -- you -- -- as you do a lot of lame excuses no one's gonna blame everyone except themselves.

For the state of -- to you're not -- hear whether or not we're better off because he can't answer that fundamental question I'll answer three.

You're not you're gonna wake up Friday morning and you're gonna have another jobs report which -- gonna remind Americans that -- the speech in the pomp and circumstance.

It's one thing and the reality not.

And fort.

Is that it's not going to be a big speech in terms -- -- they cancel the speech tonight and Bank of America Stadium.

Because of participation not because -- -- well I'm not I'm not -- not what it has and not to let this guy.

-- and that this actually incorporate visual -- angry.

When they -- -- change their events in Tampa.

-- the Los Angeles wanna meet the press and and praised them.

They you know out because they -- service because it's -- we we are making the same decision.

We can't wait until remarks he -- -- -- -- we have to wait us we have to wait people off right now and let me say this we had 65000 people that community credentials.

We have 191000 people on the waiting list.

Are concerned few days before we knew the weather was gonna do was we -- gonna have to turn people away.

And that we we would have filled that stadium let me take Mitt Romney's idea of the stadium it's Ford Field.

In Detroit was 750.

People but that's your idea the stating that you couldn't fill a stadium from.

-- the final rebuttal and then I -- -- the most respected weatherman here in Charlotte says that it's going to be fine line it's not -- approximately.

Usually you don't want it at most -- calling for a light rain.

That's not a safety you.

-- big entity tropical storm.

Look at our people and a light rain making putts and then we'll -- -- -- I dressed.

Look Chris you've been here this week you know every day we've had thunder and lightning hits every single -- is that.

-- yes goes through there you you just think about it OK no we don't apparently didn't do any event it's newcrest.

OK so last question I want parents are going to do this to bring.

Americans together I'd like to you guys would agree to a bad.

On the state of North Carolina.

Big -- a barbecue for some -- Will you do this now you guys later again you I had no idea okay I'm thinking got to shake up we you have it there are camera this is the deal.

Rhode Island til -- for North Carolina barbecue on the state -- North Carolina welcome back content if you -- eastern north well obvious.

I don't know whenever I don't -- -- every -- semi into right.

OK thanks guys and they put some sauce -- -- -- and a biscuit and will be back with more power play after this to stick around.

It was a very wonderful.

Approach to this issue in this process in the direction of this administration wants to going.

Unfortunately in minority among a number of people among.

The delegates decided to suspend rules and pushes forward even though the majority of their colleagues here in the national convention did not support it.

And that was -- to lay of the of the Michigan delegation here at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Talking about.

The thing we were just talking about which is the change to the democratic platform.

She is one of the -- by the delegates it was there screaming no no no.

Don't do it not only did they not like not only did she not like the language as it related to its State of Israel -- Jerusalem.

But also I didn't like that she felt that the Democrats being pressured to do it by Republicans about that retriever.

And this is our life here in Charlotte and good good news glad -- Internet Bret Baier the anchor of special report with Bret -- we've also been -- -- -- coverage of both conventions and who looked.

Remarkably rested its kind of creeping me out LA yeah make up most -- -- make up -- driving it all right so what are sleepers.

It's it's a little look at the second week of it does tend to be a little yeah so.

You just got briefed by the senior strategist for the Obama campaign.

Did this stuff come -- did.

They didn't come in the -- on that right there -- the brief moment.

Platform and what was happening tonight and speech tonight but of course we asked about it.

That's and they acknowledged that it was a mistake they said.

They said when the president found out about it he.

Was the one who said fix this get it fixed.

It's not a great explanation they claim that they just lifted whole sections of the platform in order to read write it.

Reflect what the president has accomplished.

In his administration in regards to.

Jerusalem as regards to Israel.

And that it was an oversight essentially.

-- isn't really launch.

And the -- that -- it.

Exponentially courses you've talked about was that.

-- itself that's -- yeah.

I'd like that three times and do -- -- saying you know why that that is -- there and everybody.

Paula Wagner now and that -- it being loaded its air and Gomez -- of our producers.

Took the picture of the prompter or roll about that it -- -- there and you as an anchor know that sometimes things get out of hand.

Just go the prompter and -- it's you have to -- you know refuse to -- is that obviously everything is rather -- right now Diego San Diego.

And -- But you know -- anchorman references -- Internet Internet of that Internet love that the question is.

That they say the president.

Approve the platform.

Did a bad job of doing it likely they won't.

They won't say that that the president with -- White House approved the program before.

It was they found out that that that it really sticky there again got -- -- and David Axelrod has more at CBS were asked that very question right.

And there was a lot of yes shifted around and I'm not answering -- like like did they approved platform before this Hubble.

Before the above and -- so that part is unclear and then.

What does Cory Booker ever do that was so wrong that he -- to get blamed for everything I mean this sport guy he's just trying to govern Newark which is no easy task right.

So essentially.

Both the former governor from Ohio Ted Strickland and -- Booker.

Thrown out of the box.

Obama -- saying it's their fault.

They're the co chairman of the convention platform committee and I guess they felt obligated to stand up for themselves enough at least to say.

Today that we were doing it to try to comport with the president's policies and stated positions right right which then.

That presents a potential problem -- the Obama campaign.

They're trying to really -- this back and say that's just -- -- moving onto the big speech tonight.

And I think it's you know an interesting moment I think when people look at this convention that -- -- the unscripted moment of the convention.

Also think tonight's going to be -- yeah they're talking about -- what's going to happen picked out.

You have Gabriel Giffords.

Former representative Eric.

Got ahead back in that Tucson shooting fuel.

Yeah after the gavels and lead the pledge of allegiance that emotional -- moment and then president will give his speech.

The senior aides said.

That -- not about magic.

Tonight it's about pragmatism.

And that's the way forward -- -- I don't stated -- Unionists.

But they pledged that they said that it was not like this you know laundry list of things.

But there will be new ideas and I asked.

What about the people out there who say.

He's president now he's had three state of the unions -- why haven't ideas.

-- the end yeah until now.

And they said some of them have so it.

So you've covered.

Barack Obama you saw him speak in 2008.

You remember what it was like when he was damaged as there was a period of time from Iowa.

To Denver basically over that long -- for January to September are.

He was -- I mean he had it his speeches were good there -- fresh.

There's been a -- one witness to the presidents oratory he has given we've heard him talk so many times.

We've heard him -- -- -- 56 speeches on health care.

That addresses to the joint session of congress on jobs bill.

A lot of them had to take got to cut and paste feeling where it becomes laundry that like you say that takes on the state of the union -- with a punch list.

I know they don't -- -- have magic but don't people need to heal some emotional connection that are there need to be some before.

And that'll be Barack Obama that's bad language will be in there they'll try to capture some of that but you're right a lot of people who have forward.

And so many times you.

It's flourishes to watch and I say.

What area yeah.

They are saying -- it's -- -- -- seven.

And we'll say I think the real question is if it's -- -- Why couldn't.

What was it when it -- since -- -- nomination acceptance speech.

And try to work with Republicans in congress to get some stuff.

What do they think about the state of the race the trajectory.

They are touting.

-- backs Republicans who -- pulling out pads.

Michigan and Pennsylvania them as signs that.

But things are turning away.

They are touting internal polls in Ohio that say they're up nine.

People in Ohio.

We -- to say that's just not the case.

And you know they feel like it's going that way the Romney folks tell you.

There segment on their side is palpable and they can move us some of these states I think comes down -- we've talked about many times Ohio.

And Virginia and Florida.

Boom boom -- if you tell me.

Who's gonna win 23 of those states I tell you who's gonna get sworn into office.

They tell you today it's as easy.

Our episode tonight big show president Obama.

Bret -- you'll watch -- he will be with Megan Kelly you'll enjoy I -- Vice President Biden first.

Who -- only about the new -- apparently the character witness.

The decision or -- the character or just the character had.

Are OK okay and he hopes Medicare pitcher.

OK Brett will be that you weren't great ion and okay we're gonna go away everything but when we come back Joseph Trippi.

And the head of the young Democrats will be here to be Democrats and the like you in that way.

You'll you'll like that but first let's look at a little bit of the Occupy Wall Street folks that we caught up -- yesterday.

People do not like the Bank of America and the Bank of America owns the stadium where President Obama is going to be.

It's going to speak to delegates.

Tonight he's back in the Time Warner.

Their cable arena.

I don't know how they feel about Time Warner Cable I've not asked.

But these people -- the -- of Occupy Wall Street.

They're down here.

Protesters not very many other there are outnumbered by police they're far outnumbered even by journalists from around the world.

Because they Wear boots on their heads and do silly things.

But here's the point about all of -- We're Democrats they care a great deal about looking cool like their coalition needs to be together.

And the concern that they have is that these folks are making them look back.

We -- the more power play after this.

Bat but what it looked like.

You have to -- moment the bro -- between President Obama and President Clinton.

And that you.

See there at the end you get with the perhaps -- Obama shoot the former president off the stage and on the shoulder you've had your moment.

Mr.

President now go away and we're going -- we're going to have our party and now we're going to have a party with Joseph Trippi.

And rod Schneider now you know differently you know different VA has worked the president's democratic presidential candidates.

Walter Mondale.

Jimmy Carter our.

You've worked for about -- -- -- don't.

In front of the Internet zone if he did he did try to help get you going for politicking and back -- -- -- -- that was somebody else from him.

But to have rod you've met before and rod is the head of the young Democrats that not so is the president -- Democrat.

We have -- -- for that reason but we also have my fifties from West Virginia and we are always gonna get a -- for West Virginia and every episode of power play whether the Internet likes it or not.

So last night.

Bill Clinton gave a long speech.

And boy it was long he gave it was it was a good speech -- there are many parts of it that we're good.

Did he get the job done in terms let's start with the first imperative.

Which is in the hall.

They got a little sleepy again but in the hall how what you're.

As I don't is any doubt about that you know all he he knocked it out in the outlook it was.

In the hall it was by ten minutes too long I don't know I think people at home I started I mean -- is just how -- it started and ready to win.

-- fifteen minutes.

But look he.

He has the credibility to save qualities that you get -- probability of a president who oversaw recess you know coming out of recession it.

Jobs record jobs -- balancing the budget those kinds of things to say hey I've seen as I've done it again.

Let me tell you this is the guy I think.

-- that definitely.

So now I'm -- there was a lot of discussion this week we've been a lot of discussion this week about social issues Democrats have emphasized heavily on social issues a belief that.

This is something that will appeal to to undecided or persuade able female voters.

We heard a lot about abortion -- a lot about birth control for a lot about gay rights.

We're same sex marriage.

This has been discussed a lot.

President Clinton.

Not so much needed get into that stuff.

-- president Clinton's strength you know as a surrogate for President Obama is on the economy and we saw that last night you know I think I thought that was powerful line was when he came on -- that.

No president.

Could have.

Turned us around from this deep of a reception for years nice to meet tonight in the end and did he say the words not even -- -- to -- -- got anything on the united -- got it all right that I had I had every outraged.

I had a pop up I had a putt but cooler.

Would have done it via pop up video in my mind -- -- that over his head with the clintons had with the bubble that that well maybe me maybe it.

I think you'd love.

Diplomatic note to bear the very powerful lines say look you know I -- were very strong economy.

And and Barack Obama needs more time here but in the right direction like -- that his credibility is very Heilman.

And in that he really needed that -- so we'll we'll isolated -- and I think Bill Clinton's strength.

Isn't it is an economic message and that's -- -- and if Barack Obama wants to be competitive in states like North Carolina.

And I'm sorry that they don't win West Virginia.

Carolinas and land North Carolina is in black.

I don't want to our strongest -- ground in this in this that was.

Absolutely can win.

Excellent picture of me and I think they like different is always very very good they're running gag that as with me and Karl Rove at the is if -- like that.

But.

Four states like North Carolina for states like Virginia.

There was a lot of socialist you talked yesterday.

I mean there was an awful lot -- -- -- know what I Sandra locked in prime time.

-- got that can't be good at what am I going to happen.

Trying to break.

Keep the container -- -- -- there.

I mean look at.

The one advantage meaning several but the one -- -- -- -- Barack Obama still has his gender gap on the play with the -- he has with the women.

Saying what a lot of people get a lot of people talk about what what what about -- and look look.

There are gaps there too but I don't think he feels like there's much you can do about that -- and -- and and I think his hope in the Clinton.

It -- be something there I mean on the economic stuff so.

It was kind of a bifurcated night in terms of what -- I think what the what what the targets were between.

Yeah standard -- and president -- so with the president and -- to -- -- under.

Undecided with Mitt Romney was very clearly they're -- convention everything was we already have the base locked down.

Because of Obama the Democrats seem to spend a lot of time talking to the base this week.

Where -- the president talking to tonight.

I think it's just you know reassuring the American people that that that -- in the right direction I think all the things we've seen all week.

You've got to sort of capture all that he's following some really excellent speeches that divides the bar very high but survivable -- those actually Michelle Obama on Tuesday night.

What she said when you walk through the door of opportunity you do not slam it behind you.

And I think the contrast that Barack Obama will -- tonight is his vision for America where we can grow the economy and that we don't we look good on my generation that doesn't get left behind.

And make sure that that sort of get slammed -- and say you know Mitt Romney Paul Ryan they're just not that concerned about -- I think that's what's got over joke.

So the president has run -- an unconventional reelection campaign.

Win starting negative and stand there he's been -- Mitt Romney and to good effect.

He is six I don't think it's that unconventional means a lot out of that George Bush.

Have you Gaza viewers gently -- George W.

Bush -- a big advantage.

He had swift boat veterans what's the climate -- anybody -- I don't know those guys you know let -- go -- I -- know but I -- you -- -- similar.

Gravity but I don't mean that the campaign -- -- -- anything that anybody the president has taken this to his bosom.

When he's campaigning in Colorado and Iowa this week he was going after you've lighting up Mitt Romney.

Character I -- the care.

Can he do that tonight in this -- I think.

You'll see him do it I don't I don't think that's how he'll do it tonight I mean I think part of this is again.

As you point out revving up the case on the democratic I mean if we.

I don't really think their whole -- people have made up their minds about Barack Obama they've made up their minds about him either going former -- voting against them.

And even if they're undecided.

What they've kind of decided in this is an every incumbent raise that kind of decided that they high art don't either looking for a way not -- -- -- the on the right that means.

Really plain and simple.

-- and vote for Romney or not -- they find Romney acceptable or not that's really what's up for grabs right now.

We always talk about that through questions and every reelect you wanna give the guy got kind of -- -- -- the right place implausible.

And the president is not gonna get past the first flight and that's what I did the convention is about continuing to try to defeat the picture.

It puts.

Romney in the box of now I don't want him -- higher and higher.

Yeah I can't quite a vampire and -- That is that it zombies -- something like that.

I can't be great you know you -- do that get right out and I had I don't -- I had wanted -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- just formed in Joe's mind about that.

So rod when we talk about -- Think we -- rod.

About.

What the president.

Needs to say tonight what if you said.

I think he basically needs to go out there and -- method that that America's on the right track I love the line that were betting on America there are betting against it.

I think it's about contracts it's all about contrasting.

Know where this country going and where Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan wanna take -- and and and -- for young people of means cutting helmets you know 40% which means fewer people accessing college.

Well repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell -- for young voters -- it was very popular president on that you know repealing three point one million new young Americans now have health insurance.

That priority for where apparently didn't these are things that are real to young voters overthrew -- -- -- point -- -- -- I was.

-- -- I think the things you are and here's some version of don't double down on trickle down I mean I think it.

If that is what the -- the basic message is.

I think that's exactly ground assault here is that I think it was a good -- it was -- -- article -- and I think if you're likely to hear some kind of reprising that maybe not is irrelevant.

That.

That won't know.

Double down about trickle down -- -- to trickle down it's been a long time -- trickle down with the part of -- -- a lot of people out there know that he.

Rising -- we're -- on -- dot.

I -- Have kept him.

Are you learning stuff from people like do you like your hair and I was young and idealistic to want exactly long time ago -- -- and I we have regulated anybody -- -- got a little bit about that apple is -- for you and other young Democrats to be down here with -- -- Democrats have.

It's critical we actually have or don't delegates this year than any in the history -- -- -- but -- 650 young people because the the party actually set -- and it's.

And it's you know delegate selection in the states had been hit goals this year for the first time and that's because of the way that will turn out -- way.

There's -- recognition -- -- dollars and forty minute walk you know I'm not saying no bond obsolete if you go to any party and having fun but that none of them that we -- the -- that the party is a good day with the amount of people here is very cool joke in -- -- who organized team.

You're gonna get in trouble because that's fifty -- -- without -- -- -- -- -- Nortel.

It added that he could do therapy we thank you for being with that and I've been all these Democrats divide and you -- talk about.

Thank -- we appreciate you.

OK when we come back.

Somebody that you've been missing if you wish to take your -- -- of Internet.

Steve -- will be aired so Ellen Ratner and we will talk to them about -- and teaches -- how it's gonna go it will delighted entertain you so -- around.

That he was making is that no president to not even FDR could have turned this around in just four years let's remember what life was like.

When we took office we -- losing 800000 jobs a month President Clinton said that last night.

In the six months before President Obama was elected we lost 3.5 million jobs and our banks were collapsing our auto industry was going bankrupt middle class families who have been punished for a decade.

We're really struggling.

So where we today we have a thriving auto industry.

Four point five million private sector jobs have been created you know we help middle class families who have been struggling to.

It was one of and that was President Obama -- argument for reelection that he will make the night near Charlotte, North Carolina delivered in -- sure.

By Stephanie Cutter who is deputy.

Campaign manager for the president and she was talking to our friends Bill Hemmer Martha MacCallum.

And this power play and welcome back as we stand outside.

-- cloudy.

But not rainy.

Time Warner Center here in Charlotte.

And the president has a big speech to get tonight and he has to make it complicated argument.

As it relates to the big question of are you better off.

And they have an answer to that is yes but it's just that you don't feel it yet you're you're better off and you don't even know it yet can he make that today.

President Bill Clinton did pretty well that last night.

-- that it is a senior writer for the weekly standard is a friend of this telecast and you have watched him on television.

Without without your -- it has been -- a -- You've had those headphones on so long you're starting to get Boeing's growing -- it'd -- you have medium right.

You have to dance so the question Steve -- Is Bill Clinton in the small thumb.

Empathetic.

Hillbilly firewall way you.

-- you're better off but you don't feel great and you just heard Stephanie Cutter wherever she got done fighting about.

The problems the Democrats had -- their platform yesterday -- and made basically the same argument which is.

You're better off you just don't feel it yet.

How did that make -- it well look I I think that's a really hard argument one of the reasons that I mean obviously -- minority.

But people who didn't think that president Clinton's we're very few and Charles it was too long it's a good good good minority could be writing about it quite.

It was 52 minutes or if it was sort of laundry list of all the things and then basically -- it wasn't one.

Large excuse.

This is why this hasn't worked or hasn't but this is why do you think this hasn't -- you just don't know talking about the stimulus talking about.

Health care -- that we haven't seen the results -- even though he's just.

That we've -- more than we have we talked about.

A lower.

Health care costs over the past -- years -- have a lot more to do the economy and he was.

President Obama's health care when he basically gave a list of series of justifications and excuses for why things are.

We're the president himself and his advisors said they would be at this time -- -- in his administration.

So something we've been talking about today we are gonna get your chance I think you rumbling out there.

But we are going to get your cats.

-- be.

Topic of discussion today as this.

Is there anything Barack Obama can -- Tonight to sound new to sound fresh to sound exciting and Americans have been listening -- for five years.

And you wanna talk about without receipts right he has talked to talk and talk and talk and 56 times on health care all that right.

What does he do tonight to either or remind people of what it was like when he was talking to them so much.

Or do something to make this fresh and different.

Well I -- he simply could.

Say something new and different I -- he could come out and give a full embrace it's that simple -- that made a mistake before.

I really and that's interest the fact that I inordinately if you don't read too much in the -- that I thought -- -- and they are -- -- the wake of things better right.

I mean I don't expect that he will although I think that there will be some warhead bakery in the direction of since symbols.

One of the things the president wants to do is to get out of this convention.

Journalists talking about and did this to the old president -- the president found 2008 hope and change returned.

I think that's getting hard to do in terms of substance but you've got a press -- I think it's ready to make that case in the same -- -- was gonna.

-- at the sky -- level up there where all of the Newton were all of this.

Media outlets are out there there's going to be some old throw us.

For -- -- -- -- -- legs of the president is going to do that yet.

But this is the speech and I think this is true about Mitt Romney's convention -- as well.

These don't last generally speaking these are things that occur.

It's about the optics it's about what they look like on television it's about how it makes people feel about visceral response.

More than the speech itself and it's about the next day coverage and I think one of the reasons that built into the Bill Clinton's speech speech didn't work as I watched.

It worked in the hall I don't think people who were walking on TV.

People yeah Wednesday thoughts are courtesy but that -- -- people are playing I am pleased that he's getting any you have the media here you know.

Over Bill Clinton's it's as if they've never heard Bill Clinton -- before and nobody's ever been this good.

And people are going to hear that they're gonna read the newspaper articles that the New York Times today -- it.

Piece after piece about President Clinton.

Hey I'm UK through 875 page -- on -- and two paragraphs about.

For buffalo on Jerusalem and on the whole thing about that Charlie are considered yelling earlier they -- god that they -- my god and they didn't who got there were doing a procedural process as it related to god Charlie.

Let's take a look because it's funny.

At the new -- from the Romney campaign about breaking up what President Obama.

And you're always out with Hollywood celebrities you can see you with Sarah Jessica Parker and George Clooney your jobs council says you haven't shown up in six months it just -- -- -- -- by your it's not me.

It's here I think we should just be friends tell us why you're breaking up with President Obama -- break up with a mamma dot com.

Not that they're looking for young women votes or anything but it is kind of funny that they did that.

The one thing when asked about that -- that -- has been most consistent on.

It is the bro hug.

Now I talked about the techniques of the bro hug and unwise and I'm not gonna ask you to do it unlikely bro hug -- Mike Emanuel last night.

-- -- which is really what I did just as soon just to show it to one shoulder again.

You're -- you shaken that he did you take usually and you -- -- and that's called hugging it out there.

That's the relative to very classic they would pull -- last night -- -- residents did shoulder -- to feel like there's a bold.

If the ball moved immediately when -- of president Clinton's speech it was it was it was very much a war.

And full embrace of three and a half years of Obama and 1815 to me because.

Think back to the first several months.

Under President Obama.

They didn't speak for the first three months of the Obama administration probably a good idea probably a good idea given the -- you -- for.

For the democratic primary these are people who -- -- still when you talk their advisors.

They don't pretend that their -- right -- they don't pretend that their war meant that if they somehow forgotten things.

They say yes there's tension you know yes there's a little bit of ice there and it it seemed to come off that one of the things in the speech and I think that that I wasn't expecting that probably came off.

You know -- -- Democrats are very pleased that today.

There's a coach says Sandra block should be good job with the NC judging by the -- because she got she is representative of the democratic agenda.

What do we have and I am doing it on the telephone here which is complicated.

Yeah that's more in here somewhere.

Okay it says yes from 532.

With the Romney campaign he talked about a lot of things he wants to take away or change.

And that frightens undecided and some Democrats -- don't like Obama a lot of people don't fully understand what Romney wants to do.

This is what they are afraid up.

That's the president's opportunity tonight is that Mitt Romney there's still a door open to ticket Mitt Romney and -- There is I expected good -- -- don't think -- will be a full frontal attack at least from President Obama and maybe Joseph Biden does some of that whole sort of TV the early speech dude but I think President Obama is going to do the opposite of what President Clinton left.

Wins and almost his entire speech -- looking backwards defending the president's record.

And had I think one sentence -- the president's gonna make to children future brighter and there's not going to be there and nowhere dialogue where are you going to be.

President Obama I think you get a feeling a lot of those blanks and how how much do you feel that building you know remains -- -- Generous friend my generous colleague Steve hey we thank you my friend -- give you one more night.

Well you know one more -- you can do it I'm for it all right bonds are all right all right okay we've got to go away.

But even -- on the road we have as we like that every day.

-- word from our.

French are trying to figure who moved the needle whatsoever.

That it had all the classic Clinton elements he was engaging -- humorless.

-- -- Mentions of the bush the -- deny that -- three days in Tampa.

But on the other hand was also vintage Clinton in that it was sprawling.

And discipline and truly self indulgent.

This is one of the strained his nomination speeches I think -- -- a kind of an amalgam between State of the Union Address.

Our policy -- seminar.

And what sounded to me make -- campaign speech for a third Clinton term.

Obama was sort of incidental he'd be shown that every once in awhile and speech and as a -- -- say well he thinks his --
