We'll bring you -- the president did get a bounce from this week's Democratic National Convention governor Mitt Romney also got a very small one after his Tampa convention enough to make this race a dead heat.

And everything's data where they stand right now combat -- co-founder of real clear politics Tom good to see it today.

-- let's start -- had to have what are the latest numbers show you about the -- race Obama vs Romney.

Well Obama is receiving a bump from his convention and it's not clear exactly how much of a bomb that he will get.

We have a couple of tracking polls -- a bit tracking over the weekend.

Gallup showed.

Obama moving out from a one point lead about a five point lead.

And in the Rasmussen tracking poll showed.

Romney had last week and now -- -- by about -- so.

He's up by a point happened the report politics average but again we'll see more polls coming out early this week -- -- give us a better indication of where the race actually stands it.

We've had some fluctuation as well in the job approval rating for the president's.

The way in Gallup poll has approved now 52% disapprove at 42% which seems -- yet.

At least especially when you're talking about economic issues the president it seems has not feared as well with the general public when asked about that.

-- the Rasmussen poll shows 49% approve 50% disapproves of flipping those numbers but they're still relatively.

Clausen and the overall average of repair politics is 48 point 5% approve 47 point 7%.

Disapprove.

It did usual all of the customary to see numbers this tight about sixty days out.

And lets you question it.

Obama definitely we've we've seen a bomb in his job approval rating -- the one thing that that.

You know you viewers should be aware of is that some of these numbers now are aren't taking it -- they've taken -- into account the convention but not the news that came after the event which was that bad job of what -- came out on Friday so.

We saw in doubt today the numbers just came out about twenty minutes ago that his job approval rating actually -- down.

Four points to his his approval rating went down to in his disapproval rating went up to.

And that took into account -- those Friday numbers so again we're gonna have to wait and see both on the job approval front and on the on the polling the head to head numbers front.

Not only that the convention bounce but as that.

That last jobs report get sort of ingested.

By the public -- to see where where this race really does stand as as were under the sixty day mark now.

Well that's what the the Republicans or Democrats.

If it did it bounces we generally see from these conventions how long did they last are they tempered by things like the one that you know another -- jobs report.

You know how long can they Colton did have that little bubble coming off of the convention.

Watching another good question I mean historically bounces will.

If it depends it it's it's a case by case scenario really.

And and the thing with now heading into the into the general election Romney now.

Has the bomb remember he spent hundreds of millions of dollars prior to the -- of time frame.

Mitt Romney negatively Romney now has the advantage here in the final -- he's got access to his general election dollars and they are launching.

A huge -- the -- so we'll see if that moves the needle any any in his direction.

Though that.

Tons of advertising that -- that Obama did earlier didn't move the needle very much and has directions a lot to see I think the debates are actually going to be a key pivotal moment this campaign we have a debate every.

Every week during the month of October.

And you think -- that the vice presidential debate is going to be a factor a lot of people say the second person on the ticket doesn't matter that much but there seems to be a great deal of interest -- what we're hearing from our viewers and just anecdotally between people that they want to really see this by -- Biden Ryan match up.

Almost more interest in that one and they are the top of the ticket.

Yes although you know and that -- save -- four years ago Sarah Palin vs Biden same thing with you know Dick Cheney when he was on the ticket.

Battling John Edwards so.

There is a lot of interest in the vice presidential debate but you're right in the end the people are voting for number's on the ticket they're voted for the top of the ticket it's -- -- be Romney vs Obama.

Those debates will be the ones that matter most.

A -- half three of those I would ask you -- something that's puzzled us a lot the last few months when you have numbers that show when it comes to the economy when it comes to his job approval.

That more people favor Romney then do -- Obama.

But yet.

Obama continues to pull ahead of Romney and overall head to -- -- in most of the polling the last few months.

How is it in your experience -- following these numbers that people can disapprove of the way that somebody is doing their job but still say I still think that there are the best person the most confidence in them to continue leading the country.

That's a very question in this is strange election in usually all the metrics or if they're like pieces puzzle pieces and -- all sort of fit together.

In this election they don't we've got two thirds of people saying that they disagree with the direction the country moving in you've got a job approval rating for the president under 50%.

As you mentioned on the economy even lower than that and yet he still leading these -- so it's jumbled up I think the main reason for that Shannon.

Is that people don't art there's still cutting the president some slack they know inherited a mess and and at least some of them certainly Democrats and some independents are still.

Buying the fact they blame it on bush.

And -- by the fact that the president says look I've done the best job that I could I need more time to work this out we're moving in the right direction so.

We'll see if that argument continues to sell here in the in the final days.

And he -- can make the debates more important than ever before Tom -- thank you so much always good to hear from you.

Thank you.

-- the employment.
