It was supposed to be a budgetary doomsday device a -- Of direct.

But now the Specter of sequestration.

A series of massive cuts to defense and other programs is looming.

As congress returns to work White House correspondent Wendell Goler on the politics behind the situation.

Days after the deadline the White House still hasn't detailed the budget cuts it will propose that there's no deficit reduction agreement by the end of the year.

Campaign -- President Obama says the deal that could force the -- the so called sequestration.

Was the only way to get Republicans to agree to raise the debt ceiling and avoid -- US default.

But the two sides haven't budged and now Republicans want mr.

Obama to spell out just how devastating the cuts would be the president needs to show us.

How he plans on putting this in place if he is not going to help us pass legislation preventing it in the first place so we're now waiting for that answer.

Obama's hand if he proposes cuts the public would reject.

But they wouldn't buy that sequester as it exists.

The latest jobs report showing weak growth and a lowered unemployment rate only because people stopped looking for work has added to concerns.

The sequester cuts could -- the country back into recession costing more than a million jobs.

The fact that tens of thousands of those jobs could be lost in the navy shipyards in Virginia threatens the president's hopes to carry that state again.

And the sequestered political impact is not lost on Mitt Romney.

It's election year and so he hasn't been willing to do -- the law even the law he signed required.

He hasn't put up those cuts he won't describe all the jobs that are going to be lost no not.

Probably until after the election it's easily found one secret related related and national security that he's willing to keep.

Dick army says the report will be released later this week it should list the number of defence bases in cities it could be affected by the cuts which are not supposed to happen remember but if they do.
