You and your family are having to get by with less now than at any time in the past seventeen years.
That's a conclusion of a new survey about household income chief national correspondent Jim Angle looks inside the numbers.
-- the census bureau's annual snapshot of American society shows people struggling to live on last.
Has annual household income fell last year for the fourth year wrote back to 1995.
Levels.
Not surprising that average household income is as basically fallen back about ten years.
That's that's bad news when it says is that the stimulus that the government tried simply didn't work.
And the median income meaning half of people learn more and half -- is now down nearly 9% from its peak in the 1990s.
Every income group from the top to the bottom has suffered income loss is.
As the recession damage the economy and we've been unable to rebuild jobs and employment.
The census survey also found the poverty rate had not changed in any significant way from last year's rate of 15%.
The highest in more than fifty years.
-- some 46 million people are below the poverty level.
That's not good news for anybody and it's especially not good.
Good news for young people because of course their job prospects are very very poor.
One analyst however argues the whole measurement of poverty is misleading because it does not count some 927.
Billion dollars in federal assistance the average benefit was 9000 dollars per recipient.
Virtually none of that spending is counted as income for purposes of calculating poverty.
He argues it doesn't matter who is really poor because so many under the poverty level live better -- some working Europeans.
80% of poor households have air conditioning two thirds of them have cable TV.
Half of them have a computer 40% of them have Internet access.
And a third of them have a wide screen plasma TV there was an improvement in the number of people who have health care with a one point four million more now insured almost all young people nineteen to 26.
And that's basically because.
These people were brought back on to their parents' health insurance.
It's not because they got a job.
No real surprises in the report just a reflection and statistics of how Americans are living and struggling -- a difficult economy Brett.
Jim thank you very --
