-- Hello everyone and welcome to health talk and Julie Banderas sitting in for doctor Manning today.

You know put their kids is a tough job -- -- need to tell you that and I'm not just talking about school projects or soccer practice.

This is a much different world.

Then when you and I were growing up -- now there are a bunch of new drugs out there on the market.

That you may have never even heard of and a pretty easy for your kids to get.

Their hands on.

Joining me now is doctor Gail Varnado to tell us what to look out for thank you so much doctor thank you for coming in and this is very scary I -- nowhere near the stage my daughter's two and a half cut.

You know what young kids can get their hands and just about any of these products there's a bunch of of of new.

Breeds of drugs out there household appliances even -- To be mindful of tell me about glass cleaner because we all have that in our home isn't.

-- what would it what are kids using -- for -- than cleaning.

What will be interesting thing is is not actually glass cleaner not know and you would think that it is because.

It's it's actually Perry White substance it's a man made one of the newest chemicals and designer drugs that's out.

And it looks and it acts on the body kind of like -- container amphetamine what.

What -- -- o'clock cleaner and a -- eyeglass cleaner and actually manufactures and people are selling it.

Kind of manufacture it as in a way to.

Tell you that -- C not for human consumption products so if I say it's bath salts a glass cleaner then.

We get around public legal issues -- it and so that's essentially why they do that.

So this powder is legal.

Well it started out being that way and to lawmakers have actually had to catch up while they've had to work really really hard agencies like the DEA have -- actually.

Enact temporary bills.

To get things to actually stop the production and manufacturing some these drugs and it wasn't until just this year July 2012 -- President Obama signed a bill.

That said that.

Bath salts are illegal okay tell us about.

Bath salts and why are they illegal and what are kids doing -- with them.

So bath salts are not the bath salts that you find a Bed, Bath & Beyond her -- insult that -- -- put in the tub and relax with.

They're actually crystalline like substances that -- Chemicals like amphetamines and cocaine and you can snort them you can inject them you can inhale -- and that's exactly what kids are doing.

Well and and they're easily easy to come by very easy to come by because they were first sold.

As items that were just household items and not for human consumption people in the name itself doesn't sound threatening her alarm absolutely -- parent -- not watching the segment.

Who hears about about -- a glass cleaner they're not thinking -- I need to watch out for my kid and make sure that.

Here she is not using that term thing because they could be talking about a dangerous drugging you don't even know you don't know about the kids like Josh that's the problem they know where to get that many when this really came out -- -- problem in 2009.

Kids were getting them -- convenience stores online through friends.

-- -- packaged in a way that's very kid friendly with bright colors right so the parent if you summit in their room you wouldn't even you wouldn't even think of that thing you know another item that's very innocent of these -- in your kid's room you would think nothing of it.

About the scandals -- worse it'll parties are we talking about the candy now know we're not a we're not at -- certainly think so you're not tasting there in the lakes get a handle -- -- and you and I know about the kids are not so kids are actually.

Going to their parents.

You know bathrooms and they're -- and taking drugs and you were finding about starting around like the ages of nine to twelve.

My -- nine as young as nine years old people our kids are going to parties.

And they're exchanging pills.

And -- the extreme that we hear is that kids are putting pills -- and and a bowl in if being -- taking them with alcohol but truly you know.

They're just exchanging popping pills taking -- home using that school and so they can have long lasting consequences because they don't even know they're taking.

We just stealing pills from their grandparents appearance and then popping.

Wow and it and it if there is one thing parents all parents should be cognizant of no matter how old -- younger kids are even as young -- nine -- that -- -- shocking very much the -- do not believe that belong in the medicine cabinet is they got to be locked away I mean -- they should be interesting differently -- -- -- -- lock and -- just like on your cleaning products and leave a lot of toddlers wade because you don't want them to accidentally drink them -- these kids are actually looking for these pills because -- friends are doing it unfortunately.

Peer pressure is leaving them to.

To want to take these drugs and so deadly.

Absolutely and you know times -- changed an axis is different and people are curious about things and so.

We might have antibiotics that are sitting -- Iran -- thinking it's a lock up or perhaps even cold medicine.

Mean we need to educate our kids not only about that.

The harms of prescription drugs but also over the counters things like add bill a leave Tylenol.

Both can be misused -- be very dangerous and dental and a lot of those drugs are now behind these you know the pharmacy because.

They can be made into methamphetamine exact you know Advil cold and sinus anything that -- -- Some of those drugs that now are being pulled off and you have to actually show a drivers like I seem to get -- to slam and you can only buy one box at -- time.

Which is great but -- sat right I didn't you with it for us as adults we feel inconvenience yes but there's a reason behind and it's really promote safety and so we have to have those same.

Kind of checks and balances at home.

Because kids do look for things and if you take one or two pills here in there we're not gonna miss them.

No you're right and then what are the long term fax.

To these children when they begin this at such a young age especially when it's undetected so can go on for awhile if it's only.

A couple pills here at the -- there -- -- it.

So the problem is if you're using some these new designer drugs we don't even know what's in them.

The McCain and tell you what the long term effects are.

Absolutely we know for certain that -- in the ring used in young kids we can see a lot of brain dysfunction and damage so you could actually end up causing some long term effects like you would see -- someone -- schizophrenic.

You can have hallucination learning disabilities I would imagine as well because obviously the cells are still developing until -- warming front nine and and forward -- and so we're building brain cells and got -- -- that is why another reason the study just actually came out that -- -- -- -- will make you developmentally.

And mentally challenged as you get older that you're learning capability you're learning kept capacity.

Will be stunts right essentially right that says that he was interesting because it actually went over a period of 35 years -- and they looked at more than.

You know that 2500 people and -- that if you started using marijuana before the age of eighteen you had more.

Brain effects and damage than if you started afterwards so people Woolley said.

-- marijuana doesn't do anything to you but actually -- in this study help support that I thought it was actually.

Sad that a study had to come out to tell us that pot doesn't make you Smart.

Hello but anyway I'm glad they finally have a study out there are two pretty much backed off a backup got -- -- here and I hope to god parents know as well.

Doctor -- thank you very much for coming in and talk to us about this and I hope the parents really do listen.

And look out for these things and listen to your kids talk to your kids that is the most important thing really -- that that that you can possibly.

Because I think kids want you to be in tune with what they're up to what their friends are doing we have to me.

All right doctor -- thank you so much and if you have a health question you can send an email to Dr.

Manny -- foxnews.com.
