It is may dated -- today -- Republican nominee who has no -- seen better -- he's getting pummeled -- the press.

Comments he made -- apply the -- of the fund raiser where that last spring.

You heard what everyone is saying about Mitt Romney.

Now time be here from Mitt Romney here and only -- beginning now.

Welcome everybody I'm Neil Cavuto and courtesy mother Jones the mother of all flashbacks or Republican presidential nominee.

Who doesn't -- degrades and cannot afford the distraction.

-- -- People who -- it's.

There yeah.

Okay here.

-- here in the mood.

These days.

It's -- yeah.

After all this president.

Well that was then the Mitt Romney now his first sit down since this whole video dust up.

The governor coming to us from Salt Lake City right now governor welcome.

Obviously.

Do you you've seen the fallout the administration quickly coming back at you governor saying that you essentially -- -- -- Wrote off half the nation how -- -- respond -- that.

Well we're of course talking about a campaign and how he's gonna get close to half the vote -- -- to get half the -- approximately I hope.

I want to get fifty point 1% or more.

And frankly we have two very different views about America the president's view as one of the larger government.

There's a date that this came out today with the president saying he likes redistribution.

I disagree.

I think a society based upon a government centered nation.

Where government plays a larger and larger role -- distributes money that's the wrong course for America that will not build a strong America or help people out of poverty.

I believe the right course for America is one where government steps in to help those that are in need where we're a compassionate people.

But then we get let people build their own lives create enterprises we believe in free people and free enterprise not redistribution.

The right course for America is to create growth create wealth not to redistribute wealth.

Governor on -- 47%.

Of the people in this country.

Pay no income taxes now a lot of them.

Because they've retired they're older lady are over -- they're they're paying.

Certainly payroll taxes and and other taxes but that 47%.

Figure which is about right.

Is it see why did you do you think that the levels should be.

Closer to what it was.

In the late seventies where.

It was in in in the twenties what what what is it acceptable level.

Well first of all of course you're right there are number of retirees members of the military and so forth -- who are paying taxes and that says it should be.

But.

But I do believe.

-- we should have enough jobs and enough take home pay such that people have the privilege of higher incomes that.

That allow -- to be paying taxes I think people would like to be paying taxes.

The good news is if you're doing well enough financially that you can't -- attacks and the problem right now as you see in this country so many people -- fallen into poverty.

That they're not paying taxes they have to rely on government and the right course to help them is not just to have government handing out but instead government helping people.

That to get back to good jobs at the -- that the numbers on food stamps are really revealing when the president took office 32 million people were on food stamps.

And now that number is fifteen million higher almost 50% higher.

Now 47 million people on food stamps you've got Americans falling into poverty under this president.

In increasing number it looks like -- these food stamp figures and I wanna get people back to work I'd like to see.

I legacy everybody who's not need to retire now the military having the privilege of having a good job and a good -- enough that that that they qualified pay taxes.

Now you said that your -- wording might have been an elegant but others have said did you just just half -- electric abide.

On this this this election year.

That that you wolf but hold the -- -- Did you.

No I'm talking about a perspective of an individuals who I'm not likely to get the support me.

I recognize that that those people who are not paying income tax are are gonna say gosh this this of provision of that Mitt keeps talking about lowering income taxes that's that could be real attracted to them and and those that are dependent upon government.

And those that think government's job is to redistribute I'm not gonna get them I know there's a a divide in the country about about that view I know some believe the government should take from some to give to the others.

I I think the president makes it clear that tape that was released today that that's what he believes.

I think that's an entirely foreign concept.

I believe America was built on the principle of government caring for those in need.

But getting out of the way and allowing free people to pursue their dreams.

Free people pursuing free enterprises is the only way -- create a strong growing middle class and the only way -- help people out of poverty.

But do you think it's a given that that base would ignore you entirely governor when you when you're running mate Paul Ryan talked about reforming Medicare and trying to contain its growth.

Oddly enough when you were on that team it was helping you in Florida State.

Rich in Medicare beneficiaries and Social Security benefits -- So -- talking tough on these issues doesn't necessarily hurt you.

With a group of benefits from them so maybe you presuppose.

Prematurely.

That this group was going to say no.

Well let me tell you.

-- we go after every group we've had to get votes and seniors are of course people who I'm getting in large numbers I've got great support from seniors.

Because there aren't happy with the fact that president Obama's Obama care.

Cuts Medicare by 716.

Billion dollars.

So getting a lot of support from seniors about it I don't think I should just but I was a senior got a lot of seniors don't have to -- of a lot of seniors pay it that that if that deal a lot of seniors pay income tax.

And lot of seniors don't like the idea that Medicare.

Got cut 716.

Billion dollars so we're getting great support.

A lot closer -- there's a lot of those I news governor and that can't that are not paying income taxes and you might have been might have boomerang none on -- -- an important base.

Do you worry about.

I was.

-- -- as talking about the fact that I don't expect to get sixty or 70% of the vote.

I understand that some portion will be the president's some portion will -- -- I've got to get as many as I cam from every single cohort in this country.

But the that intent that I want to talk about -- that that was intended to speak about.

Was the fact that you have a great divide about whether we want a government that's larger and more intrusive and redistributing income.

Or whether instead you want a government that sees its role as protecting freedom and opportunity.

And letting -- people build more wealth for all people.

Com Donald Trump.

And said that you have nothing to apologize for in an interview on The Today Show we said they have to get tough for referring New York campaign but it gonna lose.

This campaign.

What do you think about.

Well I always appreciate his counsel and you know I think this focuses a great deal of attention on.

Whether or not we're going to have a government.

That becomes larger the tells us what kind of health insurance we have to have.

That it under the president he's indicated he wants to raise taxes raising taxes on small business about a million small businesses that's gonna kill jobs.

Look look the president is borrowing a trillion dollars more that we're taking in every year.

It's a it's a pathway that looks more European -- American in my view and it's one which I know some Americans are drawn to I think they're wrong.

I think they don't recognize that it's not good for America at large but -- the 100% of Americans in my view will do much better if we have a government.

That the lives by the model established by the founding fathers and that was one based upon freedom and opportunity.

-- we're hearing word to Jimmy Carter's grandson.

Might have played an instrumental role in getting this video.

House or at least find its way to mother Jones.

On James -- the -- grants and of course the former president.

What do you make of -- I hadn't heard that when -- and I got I've I'm not too concerned -- -- about the source look this is a message I'm carrying day in and day out and we'll carry.

Over the coming months which is this is a decision about the course of America and where we're gonna head.

And we've seen the president's policies play -- wrote a play out over the last four years.

And if people think there.

They're better off I would say it will take a look at the at the numbers when it comes to the median household income which is down every year for the last four years.

Look at unemployment stuck above 8%.

Now for the last 43 months.

Look look at what's happened -- the number of people on food stamps going up up to 47 million now.

A lot of people hurting in this country in the president's policies are working and you know I'm not gonna be too critical of how people get that message out it's it's out there in a big way and and I think that will focus a lot of attention on the kind of choice I think America has.

Governor -- -- thank you very much.

Thanks -- Governor Romney well.
