Less than seven weeks ago now until the election the race for the White House enters a critical phase and after a brief.

The campaign messaging returns to a critical issue the economy.

Let's get into it with Douglas Holtz -- a former director of the Congressional Budget Office he's now president of American action Foreman.

-- I should say.

-- strategy is -- -- economic advisor for the Obama campaign and a former White House economist.

There's so of the tail on the tapes is front and center this week.

We have governor Romney are caught on tape and a fund raisers saying that 47%.

Of the American people those who pay no income taxes essentially are never going to be in his camp.

And then you have a tape of -- a state Senator Obama saying that he likes government redistribution.

Of wealth would you agree -- And that those two tapes sort of illustrate the choices in this campaign.

Well thank you for having me and John yeah there are two very different visions at work here in this presidential campaign.

President Obama believes in an economy it -- from the middle out where anyone who wants to work -- we'll have an opportunity to succeed.

And that's why you invest in education in innovation infrastructure and our manufacturing sectors we're gonna move forward we make these investments -- we -- together.

If you look at this -- behind closed door fund raiser the governor Romney had.

You know for a campaign that's been surprisingly light on specifics he was very specific about the percentage of Americans.

47%.

That he doesn't have to worry -- And we're talking here about a senior who's worked all their lives in the got a fixed income.

A college student who's working two jobs -- line on federal loans to stay in school.

And military veteran who's come home and receiving services at the VA alright folks are dependent because he pencils and victims they're not looking for hand out.

They're friends they're family they're neighbors they're Americans and those votes on those sea where Vietnam and divide us -- -- 53% vs 47%.

This presidential campaign is about a 100% of the country.

Where we're getting into the talking points -- and I appreciate the effort there but the point is I mean do these two tapes Douglas -- try would you do they really illustrate the differences between these campaigns in the choice of the American people have.

I think there are very important issues to divide tapes I think -- better right John -- for solve -- that the president's remarks reveal his instincts as an economic policymakers.

Our first and foremost do you look at -- try to take some peace from someone.

And give it to another person instead of trying to make that high grow and if you look at the administration's record over the past four years.

It has been a very poor record of growth because they don't drop the ball -- and spend more time on social policy like health care former.

Environmental policies and EPA or labor union policy at the -- of things like that.

Mr.

Romney reflects the American people and their correct concern that the government overreach violates the principles that have made this company this country so successful.

And it interfered with the ability of small businesses lost terms and are.

Our private sector Kennedy took to grow the economy and and those are the -- -- one we've seen for four years we've experienced that growth -- other ways we use for 200 years became the largest -- plan.

-- and -- the cubs got.

-- -- -- -- I have to disagree with we've -- and that's I think if you if you watch the video that you're referring to.

President's actually talking about how to make government more effective and efficient he specifically cites government agencies that you think could be you these could be improved in his home city of Chicago.

I think by bringing up this tape from fourteen years ago to try to counterbalance the tape they came out in May -- was from may.

It's just an attempt to change the subject let's look at what he plans are -- Obama has a plan to grow the economy well.

Not about my parents did all the things that we've been we've defect defect could -- and I didn't I didn't listen to the president very closely since 2007 and if it's not industry whether he can talk the issue is what will he do.

-- he is -- do more of the same in his second term there's not been one new idea and we have seen the results in the first term and and those are facts on the ground.

So I think his eloquence -- -- ever been in dispute.

From this -- rounder this week created or point six million jobs for thirty straight months in the private sector.

I was in Charlotte for the Democrat -- -- -- and the president outlined very specific ideas on manufacturing.

On small business and improving our domestic energy supply so if there's specific ideas and a record to build up there and all that on that point the president often talked about four point 34 point six million jobs created isn't that essentially what you need to create jobs to keep up with population growth over thirty months.

So the unemployment rates come down one percentage points in this time last year was the big decline.

The president and everyone else realizes that we need to move faster and that's why -- propose a very specific plan to congress.

Now we just need to break the stalemate I think the calculation for some of the folks in the house was that it was better to work against the president and -- with him to somebody the president had -- -- to -- -- -- -- -- -- to.

-- definitely on the return if we could return to the facts the unemployment rates falling because they have labor force participation rate at the lowest since 1980 want.

The tragedy of the population that is currently hold on -- here hold on the question is the -- is -- wanna call that success when people give up.

And stopped even trying to look for an -- -- false and that doesn't look like success to most people.

And you know here's your that obviously having a creator -- workers who've given up looking is that this is down last month and down over the previous years and that's.

That's not being labeled before -- -- -- -- it's always a great year since 1981.

Right right -- we're gonna continue to follow these numbers.

But again.

The choice is out in front of the American people will make it seven weeks or a little bit less from today -- chatter -- Douglas Holtz Aiken thank you both.

Thank you.
