We are your election headquarters here at Fox News Channel and we're taking a closer look at the states that could make or break this very close race for the White House today.

Ohio arguably the most important battleground of the mall.

Folks they're picking the winner in every presidential election since 1960.

JFK.

Was the last person to lose Ohio but go on to win the White House so let's take a look at it.

Ohio has eighteen electoral votes.

Not the biggest number of of any statement very important eighteen of them in Ohio -- both of these campaigns are fighting hard for them.

In terms of the economy I should say in terms of the economy unemployment in Ohio seven point 2% they're actually doing better in Ohio.

That much of the rest of the nation.

The number of visits.

You can see how important this is state is to both of these campaigns the president has been there six times since April.

Mitt Romney been there eight times since April he will go back there today.

This will be his ninth.

Visits and as you saw just a moment ago on happening now.

Paul Ryan and his running mate is there today as well.

In terms of the polls the real clear politics average shows President Obama has 48 point 7% of the vote right now in Ohio.

Mitt Romney 44 point three Stephen cough.

Is the Washington bureau chief for the Cleveland plain dealer newspaper.

This.

This election very high stakes in your home state especially for the Republican Republicans essentially have to win Ohio and Mitt Romney is no.

Exception right.

I it's been that way forever and I am the Romney campaign knows it and -- spending three days -- this week.

-- every every week I think we'll see them there every week until the election some have suggested that.

You know -- the under a Republican governor.

The Ohio economy has come back and in a weird way that sort of hurts.

The Romney campaign because the economy the unemployment rate and so forth is better in Ohio -- and his national.

Yeah it's it's a strange tracks the position of -- factually you've got the Ohio unemployment ran about seven point 2% of the national at a point one.

So who gets credit -- continues to be debated and and discussed a lot what's interesting is if you look at a brand new poll today from the Washington Post it seems as if Obama gets a little more credit from Ohio -- -- -- that governor does which is a little bit -- At the same time you've got Paul Ryan who went to college you know while he's been making some college campus appearances there.

We're taking a look at him alive right now he's at a steel company at the moment.

But -- fairly young candidate he graduated from an Ohio school could he swings some of the young voters who broke bid for President Obama last summer.

I don't hear him making that pitch right now outside of his his alma mater -- outside of -- Miami University.

Which is in a traditionally Republican area anyway Butler county that's -- that's.

John -- country up there but otherwise no I think Obama is actually working the college campus is a little bit more in fact will be yet to college campuses tomorrow.

President Obama has said that his most you know notable accomplishment of his term thus far.

Was Health Care Reform is he talking about that in Ohio.

He's talking about W here and less and less about that -- learn more about trade this weekend last week a whole lot about trade actually from both campaigns.

You're hearing about the economy I health care it's hugely popular according to the polls which is a bit of a change from a year ago.

Hi Washington accepted that it's here -- -- -- except that don't go with that.

This doesn't seem to be an election that's a referendum on Obama care.

We saw -- as we started this segment the president up about four points in Ohio but it has been -- -- I mean this race is gone up and down and and been razor close at some point.

It could be that way again right.

It could be that way -- -- it's it's been close the last couple of elections that four point average by the way out factors in a couple of polls from a week or so ago.

Now we're a little bit tighter than the most recent polls -- mean our newspaper and the other Ohio newspapers.

Had -- apple over the weekend doubt we have about five -- Washington Post has a new -- that -- that -- eight points and -- and -- politics of course -- an average now now both of -- you could see ads went up -- down and it can be pretty close regardless of five -- -- -- point -- at this point -- and the Fox News poll -- the president up by seven in -- also yes they -- out there is a bit of -- spread.

Thanks very much Stephen come from the -- Cleveland plain dealer thanks.
