Created -- get a taking shots at -- -- Romney first it was the tax returns this time it is governor Romney's religion.

Senator Reid says Romney is quote not the face Mormon as -- And he is quote -- in the Mormon religion.

It's important -- -- senator Reid is himself a Mormon joining us our political panel Steve Hayes the weekly standard.

-- -- of CQ roll call and Sam young men from Reuters Steve.

What's up with so.

There Harry Reid well he's sort of been the designated -- for the Democratic Party he makes these outrageous sometimes outlandish attacks on -- Lot of people come from Capitol Hill reporters -- the the fight report on it and then it sort of bubbles up into a bigger issue.

You know it -- does he go does he crossed the line here in terms of appropriateness.

Maybe I think that's debatable for me the big question is are these affecting and effective -- what's the point of making these attacks and it's hard to see one unless you take the really really cynical view that.

He sort of catering to anti Mormon bigotry by raising the profile of the mere fact that Mitt Romney.

Is a Mormon hard to believe he would do that but I can't see any of the reason for him to making these attacks.

I'll bring.

You have to remember that Harry Reid is not only the senior most Mormon in congress he's -- senior most Democrats a part of his job is to help President Obama get elected.

And I think there are a lot of mormons in Nevada and elsewhere who are excited by the prospect of maybe having a Mormon president and I think Harry Reid.

As a fellow Mormon is trying to make the case that the Democrats can also represented mormons and it's just you know political calculation like you said.

He's trying to get the present elected he's he's going to bat for president does his job.

Well I mean not only that but he's also trying to protect us and -- thin Democrat majority in the senate.

And the -- that Harry Reid is Harry Reid doesn't care what anybody else thinks he's.

He's he's the president's attack dog here in fact I'd say.

Considering Joseph Biden does most of his -- attacking with a smile.

Then they Terry Reid is more is more vicious attack dog he can go after Romney on anything in its history personal with him -- he -- as the senate majority leader.

-- -- -- Well I think Republicans will be quick to say that -- -- how many months without passing a budget they've.

-- -- on a number of issues.

So I think if you're if you're asking Republican the notes and didn't Harry Reid is is the king of good luck he's been.

Single handedly respect in the -- and responsible for for government grinding to a halt.

I think Democrats would argue that he's a fighter he's their fighter has them.

He's a former professional boxer has been their -- all along.

-- That's right I mean you have to remember that he's also sort of the de facto leader of Tibet Democrats in congress and what he's doing is is fighting for his party's -- the fighting and trying to make the Republicans look as bad as possible and to that end I think he's been somewhat successful.

I would feel somewhat ashamed -- -- the -- the anonymity issue when he said that he'd the other he'd gotten a secret sources said the governor Romney campaign cash.

-- -- -- -- -- and -- will take a look at it and we'll examine and see whether that's true or not but then when it's but it's really Soros you know trash you say video and anonymous source -- and try to trash someone -- this does not building this does not make me like Harry -- anymore he does that and then today you know and because the week he seems.

Really go to the gutter.

Yeah I'm not I'm not sure Harry Reid has a very well developed sense of shame and obviously I think that -- -- launch these kind of attacks.

He did and then again that he was roundly criticized not only by Republicans but by the media -- people raising questions of propriety of -- raising these issues then and media without any supporting what we'll support without any sourcing.

And you know he waited today and -- who watched it again.

And he waited a day and -- launched against Minnesota I don't think feels a tremendous -- and let these guys.

It's attacks -- you have to remember that maybe Harry doesn't care too much about whether he's like he's not up for election again until 2016.

And he would -- kudos -- they're running in on them.

I'm just says people you follow up president volume because -- like cancer Harry Reid.

-- have been more was governor Romney this year than -- do you know I do get the sense that these attacks from senator Reid.

Do stick in the crawl the governor I think he I think they get understand a little bit.

They take a break panel.

Coming up --
