Welcome back his message of hope and change helped bring in young voters in 2008 but according to a new study youth engagement for this election is down 17%.

How will it impact the outcome of this election.

Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel and anger joins us now hey -- greatest what do you know if you -- so what happened to the youth enthusiasm.

They lost their jobs.

At least that's -- -- -- but the Pew Research Center is showing that only 18% of them are deeply engaged in this election.

And a more telling number is that.

Only 50% are certain their registered to vote than it is your lowest number -- is measured in about sixteen years so this enthusiasm is down is it reflected in the fact that yes they may be made.

They lost their jobs or that they can't find jobs.

-- they can't find very good jobs.

They have been hurt hard and the last four years old inflation -- the unemployment rates and running around 8% there unemployment rate has been about twice that.

And the most interesting thing -- came out was a study by the Northeastern University folks at the labor market center.

In April they -- -- deep dive into the kind of jobs people had and what they discovered is that -- but.

The totals up to 53%.

Of young people.

A reader underemployed or underemployed and underemployed means college graduates taking jobs that you only need -- high school education.

To hold and you know what's interesting is that in that.

Big unemployment number that we got -- Friday some point 8% it's at 800000 jobs.

Both 500000 of those are part time jobs would suggest a lot of people are going into this under employment pool right now.

And of course is particularly bad news for young people because tuition keeps going up -- -- -- no actually we were just talking in the break.

About how expensive.

College private universities are now -- kids are getting it from both ends -- They are getting it from both -- and -- must be.

Just shattering for them to get out of college -- a lot of kids really do work hard in high school today to get into those colleges and then they do well in college and -- get out and -- can't get a job.

Commensurate with their skills and I think the reason for that is because really it's -- low growth rate we've had for four years it's down about one point 5%.

Historically in the United States it's been 3% -- growth rate of around 3% provide good jobs for people.

Well let's talk politics in this because this is fascinating to me -- your piece which you wrote -- the Wall Street Journal about this youth vote.

You stated there -- that -- sure losers the young people but who will they vote for because I thought well -- they're not gonna vote for -- President Obama your enthusiasm has dropped from 2008.

He's tells a sizable lead.

Surely the Romney campaign has picked up some of those voters now and you say needless to say Mitt Romney's not picking up what Barack Obama has lost.

-- I think that's right in recessions.

I think young people tend to go with the idea that -- -- safety net for you need subsidies.

I have been saying that.

It's terrible that so few of them are paying attention I think the Romney camp ought to reach out to them.

The election is not about which guy you and like more than the other -- which one is saying things that is going to get that economy.

Back up to a growth rate this gonna give you a good job.

And of course that's the answer and it doesn't seem from where we sit as though either camp has been cultivating them enough.

Well Obama I think has taken them for granted it and mostly anecdotal reports we get on campuses is that -- enthusiasm for him this ball and off.

He needs them desperately to show up to vote but neither camp is really appealing much to those voters and Obama has looked like -- -- shifted to other demographics to make up for the lack of enthusiasm right like in the Latino population and other sectors other minorities they what they think they've got them they want them to turn out but you know as we're seeing you at Rasmussen on earlier.

After that debate we have had a reset in this election and I think all of these campaigns are gonna -- Have to go out and hit those groups that they haven't talked to up -- now.
