This was dishonest.

And not in favor of a five trillion dollar tax cut.

Romney's being dishonest here too.

According to an independent nonpartisan study Barack Obama and liberals who raise taxes on the middle class the chairman of this so called independent.

He's from Romney's former company.

President Obama continues to distort Mitt Romney's economic plan.

The latest not telling the truth about Mitt Romney's tax plan the -- -- doesn't -- up.

And that is what October looks like and this is power play and I -- -- -- all.

And Barack Obama's campaign says that Mitt Romney is a big fat liar.

Mitt Romney and his campaign say that Barack Obama and his team are lying about the -- So that's how you know that we are getting close we are in -- thirty days away from a big old presidential election.

We will talk about who's telling the truth that we will talk about.

What it means for the national discourse in the president's chances to beat back and Romney search post debate.

We will talk about Mitt Romney and his foreign policy posture which he's going to lay out today in a speech at the Virginia Military Institute.

We will also have a pollster -- To examine this question how big and how Long Will the bounce that Mitt Romney got.

From his debate performance last we will do those things we will have some power points for you and we'll have a very special.

Birthday.

Addition of couldn't watch so there is much for you to be happy about on this Columbus Day Internet.

And in fact one of the things that you should be happy about is that Matthew cosmetic.

He's the editor in chief of the Washington free beacon is making his maiden voyage here on the SS power by Matthew well.

Thank you for having -- it's great to be here we'll see if that holds.

And we're not we're not just having it because this is -- -- great celebration for Italian Americans everywhere.

Good job on discovering -- your mental -- yes good job -- discovering the new world.

Some -- the folks may not be too thrilled about it but overall western civilization says way to go.

But we are having you here because.

You are citing the -- can.

And I recommend it it's definitely.

Right of center.

But it is definitely clear -- reporting and it does it's does it it its very best.

To be a grown up.

Internet site and we like that.

All right so here's the thing.

Is that.

Mitt Romney.

Who until.

Well I don't know.

About 9:15.

PM last Wednesday had -- described by.

Democrats and many of the establishment press as.

Bumbling stumbling.

Gaffe prone.

Blue blood stance that couldn't do anything.

He -- President Obama is behind in the debate.

And the next thing you know he's Elmer Gantry said David Axelrod.

On CBS's.

A Sunday talk -- with Bob Schieffer.

How did how did Mitt Romney go from being stumbling bumbling new blood to -- Huckster tent revival.

-- but the short answer is he won the debate that.

May god yes it was amazing how quickly the Obama campaign team started spinning the thing you know remember there for only for Obama campaign workers and that's been remember the debate -- Dell said it will you know Romney won but on style and I thought it was so ludicrous that you know every windows.

Mitt Romney's -- the -- and that Mormon Graham high you know who's been trying to relate to people not always successfully.

And yet it somehow that he bested Obama the friend of Jay-Z and beyoncé on style was absolutely absurd and it just showed you -- they really had no argument so.

They've now reverted to a second argument.

Which is that Romney is lying.

And it -- -- usual argument to make because.

For one thing if it's.

Romney isn't lying that they're different studies as he said at the debate and Obama could quote study isn't Ronnie can -- studies and they're all these assumptions and to.

Obama is now where he didn't want to be going into the first debate one of the reasons why he says now the New York Times -- -- Affiliates do it says that he pulled these punches with that he wanted to look presidential and above -- all well.

No importance of this type of this new attack calling Romney a liar could come back to hurt Obama actually.

Right so.

The way and I wrote about this and you power play today which you can have Internet I'm right here on Twitter if you want to tell me what I'm doing right or wrong.

You could just follow me -- -- I won't say a shut up you're getting a strong grass.

Were well done but I wrote which regarding that if you follow me in my power play today that for the president.

Once upon a time for the chief magistrate of the United States to a close to call his challenger a liar.

And say you are line that you did allegation here basically short -- and that is this.

That the that Mitt Romney knows that he plans to increase taxes on middle class -- germs.

But he's lying and say that saying that he won't and this is all based on the urban institute and Brookings which are left leaning think -- -- -- a study.

That's fill in the blanks and Romney's tax plan and said that's what he'll do.

So because he rejects that claim the president says he's line.

But Matthew the I did that the president of the United States would accuse.

Guy who is nominated by the other major party in the former governor of stage it's -- small bit -- state.

Of being a liar.

That would have been news -- earlier point in our political history right.

Yeah you expect great things got to put a big deal sitting president says the guy's -- that should be like a big deal.

We've now become so obsessed with.

-- -- who has the right fact check who's telling the truth and of course liberals.

Believe that the truth is synonymous with liberalism and so anyway servers and conservatives don't disagree go from the -- -- think that this this -- -- -- they're very -- they think they're telling the truth to it of course but there are empirical studies and that is the truth is.

Obama is relying very heavily on one.

And there aren't that study.

Has come under fierce criticism in fact the authors of the study have admitted to many conservative journalists -- were asking questions about this in their pursuit of the truth.

They've admitted -- well yeah maybe we assumed certain things about the wrong that was meant that we don't know I was actually gonna happen and the American Enterprise Institute which is sort of -- mainstream can.

Sure -- -- think tank.

Has come up with -- what's sauce as Mitt Romney once -- sauce for the goose is sauce for the -- they've come up with their own take on the president's economic plan to talk about what tax increases would result.

For folks under that but this is not truth or falsity this is not a question of it Mitt Romney can say that -- -- -- says this and Barack Obama can say Brookings says that.

But this doesn't constitute -- why this -- Huge disagreement right -- right which is the basis of politics but every time Chris that Obama says Romney is line.

Or Romney's being dishonest for Romney's gonna break his promises Romney has an opportunity which she did in the debate several times -- what about your promises Mr.

President you promised to cut the deficit in half while we're now had -- fourth straight year trillion dollar deficits.

You promise that health care premiums we're going to fall they've increased you know you've promised a poverty was going decline.

Itself so -- the Romney and the strength of Romney's performance I think fundamentally was he had the facts at his fingertips he had an argument.

Obama had no argument and that's why this is the most lopsided presidential debate.

Certainly in my lifetime and I think anything that's people who have lived longer than me say since the beginning of the presidential debates on television in 1960.

That old Dick Nixon took a pretty bad if you look at six that was not.

That was not a -- the lazy -- was not was not the way to go.

But now here's the question.

For the Obama campaign they have been out.

After Mitt Romney on character.

Issues since jump street sense made -- -- and he's a vampire who sucks the blood of the middle class he's -- tax cheat.

You can't trust -- you can't trust him.

At a certain point is there a danger for the president in this that.

People cease to believe your accusations I mean I I found it notable that for the sitting president United States accuse somebody of lying.

And it sort of was like oh well wolf send that to the fact checker and see what they say and -- get three -- four Pinocchio isn't it sort of goes away.

Is it that he has done -- swung so hard against Romney.

That now those kind of attack sort of just -- away.

Let's be you know it's hard -- the the charges it up against the reality principle and so the reality reality is right so yeah.

We've had months now of talking about how Romney -- this horrible out of touch with a -- eight support gates' middle class is gonna raise the taxes.

Then all of a sudden.

An audience of over sixty million people -- Romney.

With the president almost seven and now close to seventy.

And it's undiluted and so it's going to be very hard I think for the people who have seen all these negative ads.

Then tens of millions of them watch this debate and they see that Romney is not actually that person.

That they've been told he is after all.

And on on the margins for this election is gonna be one I think that helps Romney a Columbus Day treat for you Internet Matthew that we have to come -- -- citizen thank you all right.

Okay will be Sandra Davis says here on the twitters.

Good old -- -- and if you can't win with logic hit them over the head.

Not not not too far afield from some of the when you get -- October some of the political reasoning goes on so we thank you for that Sandra.

And I will tell you this in -- -- What has happened here with all of this -- slinging is gonna make what happens on Thursday.

At Centre College in Danville Kentucky a lot more interesting because -- -- -- -- you know this Joseph Biden kind of tends to say some stuff.

So with the Obama campaign and back in full attack about vice presidential debate should be very -- -- when we come back.

We will have for you other delights Columbus Day delights we will talk about Mitt Romney's foreign policy speech -- president's gonna do regain the upper hand there in light of some surprising new developments.

On that front.

Bret Baier when you like will be here -- stick around.

And ourselves from our common enemies.

We land.

We'll -- And -- the path is long and uncertain.

The thought of -- in Europe is as inconceivable today.

As it seemed inevitable.

In the last century.

This is what makes America exceptional.

And bat.

Is Willard Mitt Romney Republican nominee for president giving a far reaching address on foreign policy and Virginia Military Institute.

Right now and in fact if you want to watch more of it.

You can go out to foxnews.com and you'll see that -- streaming their lives and you can watch the whole Dag -- thing.

But this is power play.

And the good news for you and and that is that Brett -- is here now aside.

From being the anchor -- special report the aptly named special report with Bret -- He also happens to be something a foreign policy hand and knows a lot about this front this time pentagon and overseas.

-- these things so when Brett is here -- like to attack his knowledge on that.

So.

For Romney -- the timing is pretty good because aside from it being Columbus Day when a lot of people may be home and watching at midday speech.

Also today we have some breaking news on the -- front about the former head of the security detail.

That was in Libya they got pulled out saying telling Jan Crawford it CBS.

And Jake Tapper ABC.

That the ambassador one of them to stay and was concerned about security but got mixed in Washington the -- Think that the -- stories continues to explode in every day we're learning more and more we were.

-- the tip of the spear at the beginning of the story you have to you had two big.

X one on how -- that the presence of an al-Qaeda affiliate.

In the -- in the planning of this organization in the number two the knowledge that the administration within 24 Al worst that this that this was a terror.

Yeah and others Catherine -- and James doesn't have that broken parts of this story -- so as this story continues to evolve it's a big deal.

Indeed.

So that's a part of this the other part is the 30000 foot view for governor Romney in the politics of this if you listen to this speech and -- had them.

The text of it here in front of me.

He is in a woven in here.

The theme of American and exception listen and why the end of -- should be at the forefront of the world but he quotes.

General Marshall.

George Marshall who is a -- my graduate by the way saying the only way human beings can win a war is to prevent it.

This is the feet.

He says that America needs to be on the forefront to prevent wars.

And he gets back to -- saying that the president.

President Obama is kind of -- fond of saying that the tide of war is receding.

Around the world after he is administration.

But.

Romney goes on to say I want to believe him as much as anyone.

But I look around the world and I see Libya deteriorating I see Syria falling to pieces I -- the Middle East.

Essentially.

Not doing well Iran getting closer to a nuclear bomb.

And he says it is a -- it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region in the Middle East is higher now.

Then when the president took office and I think that's the theme he's coming back to -- Is that because of in -- size a lack of leadership.

That America is actually.

Less safe than when President Obama took office despite the promise that all of these wars would be wound down.

And there are -- US troops in Iraq.

So -- laden is very much -- We know we know that al-Qaeda is now that al-Qaeda is alive but.

In the end it doesn't that give the president when when Romney.

Whose foreign policy experience.

It is.

Some dealings at the Olympics in some financial some some.

Work that he did that -- capital.

The Indian isn't the president just gonna have the trump card on this sucker.

So if you look around the world at the the things that are going right currently yes.

There's not a lot Singapore looks good these days Australia there's that is not a lot of great things to trumpet.

And bin Laden being dead is clearly one of them yes but on the big -- Geopolitical front.

Back.

I think there are the reasons that Republicans could.

Really push forward on this.

On this foreign policy front so.

You know or there were a lot of Republicans -- were really hoping that the foreign policy debate was the first debate because they thought that governor Romney was going to have them.

Trump card there could be well positioned there but now after his performance in the first debate.

They're saying.

Well good thing that was -- first.

But now he's -- -- -- position himself now the next debate for him is the town hall debate.

And that's a whole different dynamic as you know.

That's feeling human emotional connection not beating your.

Friend up with a -- right now -- no doubt we'll see but I think that this speech.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays it's it's also itching to see that -- Obama in his stump speech is putting foreign policy very high.

In that speech right there we thank you very much you very generous colleague.

And you Internet if you are as Smart as I think you are will be watching at 6 o'clock eastern tonight watch Bret is old stuff.

Penal and the whole gang and characters from the Fox News Channel if you.

The best one hour summation by the tree and find anywhere about the -- -- thank you Brett.

Okay Internet we're gonna take a quick break but when we come back we got a -- -- we're gonna break down where Mitt Romney's bounce is where it's going have -- seen high water mark is just getting started.

It's complicated but they're Smart so we'll figure it out sister program.

I've got a minute.

You know my staff -- came over early to get the show.

I got left behind.

But I have my understanding it was regrettable show.

It.

And everybody else is incredible professionals there there's such great friends and they just perform flawlessly.

Night after night.

I can always say the same.

And that rim shot was from President Obama who was at a fund raiser huge fund raiser in Los Angeles that featured.

Katie period Sheryl Crow beyoncé -- on that beyoncé.

And all sorts of famous people out in Los Angeles as he continues to a rack up huge campaign contributions.

And this is power play and -- the president was making fun of his debate performance keeping with the theme that.

He had an off night that it was maybe he was -- maybe it was the altitude.

Maybe it was -- he was worried about something else it was his anniversary but that he had an off night.

So what was the consequence to the race of that night whether you think it was a -- -- -- just weeknight for Obama.

And will -- last and where's it going.

Let's talk to too Smart people who know.

I here in DC with me is David Winston and you know to be president of the Winston group -- -- for the red team he's a Smart person.

In other Smart person is -- show.

He is a democratic pollster he's also a Fox News contributor but you know and love -- best Internet.

Because he is one the host of campaign insiders which you just watched you were still probably poring over what he said this morning.

-- thirties at 1030 on Mondays I doubt welcome back thank you so much press.

And I can't hear you hear -- to get -- and find out sounds good okay well I can't.

So Doug I'm gonna ask you questions and at least David can hear about what you say.

So we'll do well there -- -- hello.

Doug area for us again pleasure to be here.

Myself quite so you -- -- point -- you've never had me on your show but that's who we know never had a guest.

And at times you'll be it is him it's OK I've learned to expect less is just mountain bias it's inside hillbilly violence done.

-- -- how big how real how durable.

-- well very good questions and I think it's two or three points now we here for five days away from grade six days.

I think the swing states are effectively even we could Parse them state by state.

Florida the governor is a little ahead.

Maybe Ohio little behind but they're basically pretty much -- up the race is -- it up we're in a statistical tie there's one big but.

Chris and I'd be very it just didn't yours and David's reaction.

The -- the electoral map works.

If the president wins Ohio.

It becomes very difficult if not impossible.

For him.

For him being governor Romney.

To win this election.

Absent some operational results.

So the electoral -- still favors the president even though the race itself is about as close as it can -- -- Ohio has not comported.

With the national -- swing states David weaves it throughout we've seen throughout all of that Virginia Florida Colorado New Hampshire -- even Wisconsin.

And sometimes Michigan.

You can see them moving up and down with the national trend Ohio where the Obama campaign has spent the most money calling Mitt Romney a vampire.

And a really really really really terrible person Mitt Romney has -- struggled to close that gap.

Now -- but we've not seen a survey yet from Ohio since this debate and so I mean everybody is sort of waiting on pins and needles sort of see what these first round -- service look like you're right I mean.

Look -- Republican has never won the presidency without Ohio yeah about -- may be visited this to be first but I think the running campaign and most Republicans wouldn't wanna try to.

Test that theory.

But there's there's -- only here in terms of the as Doug said we've now gotten back to parity in terms of this race but I would suggest that.

Actually the momentum is still -- governor Romney he's changed the course of this debate he's -- the initiative and so.

While it's even he -- the initiative and he sort of setting the tone of where this conversation is going which has seen.

Is this -- has been about the economy it's been about taxes we've been going back and forth not on the president's plan but -- governor Romney's gonna do.

And given the fact it's a center right country that's a good place for him to be -- so.

Yes we've seen it even -- but I think the initiative is still governor running.

The greatest -- -- think the narrative has moved in his direction.

But I thought I would be a little bit more.

Skeptical or -- little bit more courses certainly that is I think the Obama team's reaction.

To the debate witnessed by the sound clip you played in some of the advertising they're -- doing has been quicker out of the box than the Romney campaign.

I think as I suggested the electoral map is still in the favor of President Obama so.

I don't necessarily think the momentum is as.

Dramatic is perhaps David does that I would.

Say with Gallup and Rasmussen out today.

Showing the race dead even whatever the bounces.

It stopped given the favorable job numbers from my Friday.

David.

Well favorite dog.

Favorable.

Well all right -- Greg rose seven point eight is better than -- point one whether you're in West Virginia -- park avenue.

Depends on whether you're playing golf for bowling again.

The quick and big big question for you is this.

The president has been -- referenced his line of that line of attack and it has been a starchy one.

Mitt -- is a liar Mitt Romney's Elmer Gantry.

This is good date for good debate performances only evidence that this terrible mess.

Can that be effective.

Now I mean I think at this point the idea anymore negatives in terms of a Mitt Romney at this point I mean what is suddenly somebody near and what's that when you negative now is somebody who got all know now not gonna support -- -- I I I think what and what has done alluded to.

Yeah what you're seeing a reason you're seeing the Romney campaign in terms of what they're putting -- -- a little bit longer this is a change direction for them I mean they look like they were going back to make this a referendum.

And all of a sudden they have some positive things to say about their -- some positive things to put forward.

And so would I think you're seeing is that sort of strategy shift that we thought was gonna happen with Paul Ryan.

Is now really actually take effect.

Internet that is your culture -- one blue one red both Smart we thank you gentlemen for being with us anyway so much press okay and now for a few power points.

And today we're talking about being in dangerous territory and the gators territory is that this race has gotten uglier.

Earlier than any race and it's bound to get a lot uglier still now look.

Point one politics is the pursuit of power so it's no surprise it gets nasty.

Talking about the keys to the missile the nuclear missiles you're talking about.

Big powerful things people are gonna say and do a lot of stuff and that's not do so we're not bad wedding here we totally understand.

That that's just the way that things go.

But I want to point out this.

That a new love is being set in this race and that is this that the incumbent president of the United States.

Has -- a series of blistering personal attacks for six months against his challenger.

Even in cases -- they've been proven to be untrue.

Or even in cases when the president himself says that his campaign goes overboard that he admitted to an interview with CBS.

That's not good and it's particularly not good that it doesn't seem to alarm anybody that the discourse is going in this direction.

And it doesn't seem to alarm anybody that ad hominem attacks are cool now so that's maybe something to think about so here's the third point in this what you need to do Internet.

Demanded more of the candidates you support.

Whether or not you are sporting -- Obama our candidate on the state or local level.

There needs to be a penalty that's paid for candidates who get into these attacks where they're not talking about policy.

But are just attacking individuals.

Either especially when there are facts to back it up to you needed to remain more of your candidates are -- -- -- they're not gonna listen.

So that -- for you to think that there's some power points.

And it's -- Monday so there's no Charles.

I know that upsets you that you are happy -- know that on the hunt with Jonathan Hunt is up next but just to all -- your wounds Internet.

The with the people of Russia.

We're celebrating over the weekend Vladimir Putin's sixtieth birthday and what we are told are absolutely spontaneous demonstrations broke out all over the country we thought you'd enjoy it so take a look at that we'll see you back here tomorrow.
