All right fifty years ago this week the world's most famous spy hit the big screen.
I had my unit last -- and -- James planes bombed.
James -- wind was period and this is supposed to look at.
All -- -- and being an -- half century sorry.
I'm -- -- later in the James Bond series is one of the most celebrated in history and our next guest.
Says that that's why you see in the movies have much better than the -- in real life he should know he was able.
Like James Bond with us as former M I six officer and author sentinel spy catcher novel done.
Matthew -- Matthew welcome to show.
It's good morning.
-- it certainly looks glamorous obviously bond over the years.
It.
Help us separate some fact from fiction here and I think we might prefer fiction side of opening.
You guys are in the trenches doing the real deal stuff let's start with the glamorous women.
Was that part of the truth behind your -- you're experiencing your career.
Well I'd certainly -- many glamorous women put some fortunately I couldn't tell them I was small I literally Matthew Thompson my experience was a little bit different.
All plumber so it wasn't just this mortgage forward with all of beautiful women in plunging neckline for you.
-- -- -- -- -- Okay did you have a like -- cigarette that you could smoke it would also fire bullets.
Again no that wasn't my experience and -- would have been very handy but -- no I didn't have one for talk about reliable gadgets of course -- go to the spy museum in Washington DC you've seen all of these incredible gadgets and you.
Not that we have a person like Q.
Or a person behind the scenes who's actually in giving you all of these great gadgets but I'm I'm sure there were some pretty interesting things that you got to use and work on now.
Yeah I mean we had suddenly had a hold opponents of the was actually dedicates -- increasing -- -- mincing.
Gadgets and that's on the marks a fantastic.
The problem that we had or certainly I think some of -- -- test was that.
Many of them were not she work when we go to places that we wanted them to -- -- there.
It was a bit of a running joke within MI six that set the catches -- certainly weren't quite dreams home.
-- about how you roll -- -- you were a spy.
Did you have an Aston Martin that you drove around.
-- it tough -- transportation.
No I didn't that -- for the most Hossa had a fit considerate wasn't quite the -- and.
You know you don't -- not have to -- -- intense.
How might a lived in London that's all I'm I think -- -- -- -- more and more practical and announced a Molson you have to blend in I guess that maybe you can't be driving around like that what about a great soundtrack like this.
It's such a great soundtrack so there's no music that plays everywhere you go.
Again again nobody -- that's -- most of my meetings with foreign -- its assets were in hotels.
And so my experience is rubble more than it was some hotel music -- -- -- music.
On the Valdez full seasons -- that kind of stuff say it wasn't quite been sparing them -- -- soundtrack capsule.
OK now let's get to the serious stuff because obviously James Bond did have a license to kill that was part of his -- -- motto.
-- -- -- and and you must have as well.
-- it's adjusting Matthew because we look at the numbers yesterday publicist number about James Bond since 1962.
James Bond has killed 352.
People on the screen.
Is -- something that happens every day and it seems like person a day.
That's quite a lot.
But it's and and -- sense of -- Caleb you know the the reality is that as a spy on it.
Everything you do overseas is illegal so having a license would would actually be meaningless because of course are massive and the norm will -- -- in the country liberal precinct.
It would be it would have been quite good to have a license sort of show off to people but in reality wouldn't of been much worth -- told it.
I'm curious so from a -- perspective obviously James Bond he's such an iconic member of the British family if you will.
Are you conscious of that image when you're in it in in the spy service or do you all sort of look at each other -- joke or make jokes internally about being James Bond.
Suddenly I was never conscious of -- Formula -- I was spy.
That said like everyone else we're human intelligence sources we will enjoy a good -- this were left -- a good movie.
A most disliked the home movies on on the Vick fan but -- when I was actually going amount to much all that he wasn't in my mind to -- Well the book can let people know what it really is like to be -- -- -- sentinel.
A spy catcher novel Matthew Dunn thanks so much for coming and giving us a little insight into that world.
Makes it.
It's my pleasure thank -- Can we see the new bond film Adele is doing the soundtracks.
And avoid sky falls and -- I think it comes out right around Christmas time.
Thank you for that -- -- it's spring all update you on Twitter please.
On -- don't -- -- directly to speaker.
But -- still ahead.
