Welcome to The Journal Editorial Report I'm going to go all eyes were on Kentucky Thursday night when vice presidential candidate Joseph -- And Paul Ryan squared off in their one and only debate the two sparred over everything from Iran took.

Medicare reform to middle class taxes.

The middle class got knocked on their -- the Great Recession crushed -- They need some help now the last people -- need help.

Are -- 120000.

Families for another.

Another 500.

Billion dollar tax cut over the next ten years.

There aren't enough rich people in small businesses to tax.

To pay for all they're spending.

And so the next time you hear them say don't worry about it.

We'll get a few wealthy people who pay their fair share what show little class the tax -- coming EU.

Joining the panel this week Wall Street Journal columnist and deputy editor Dan head writer columnist bill -- -- political diary editor Jason Riley and Washington columnist Kim -- so Jason.

Did that Joseph Biden help the Democrats get their Mo -- back.

I think he did what he was tasked to -- last night by Democrats which is to energize the base.

After last week's debate performance by Obama Democrats were concerned they were worried.

I think they're less so after this vice presidential debate and I think.

That was Joseph Biden's primary concern energizing house are specifically did he do that.

Well he did that by mentioning a lot of things that people had wanted to Democrats had wanted the president to mention last week the 47%.

Remarks.

The auto bailout and so forth.

That's what they wanted to hear and he served up a lot of red meat last night OK Kim -- what about Paul Ryan the -- hold up under the onslaught.

Paul Ryan's job was to go in there.

Meet all of these accusations everyone knew what was coming this was going to be Joseph Biden just lambasting him right and left.

So his job was to go out there at meet this Pestrana for the Obama campaign strategy.

Refuted call them out on it.

And generally not hot put in any big areas that would in any -- dominating the discussion in the days after an anyway check of the Romney campaign to that extent he did do that.

One of the features of this debate was the that the the Biden mannerisms and his behavior.

And Biden interrupt -- she might column let's look at what -- Biden interjected himself when Ryan was speaking.

Here's the problem.

They got caught with -- hands in the cookie jar turning Medicare into a piggy bank.

For Obama care.

Their own actuary from the administration came to congress and said.

One out of six hospitals and nursing homes are gonna go out of business as a result of this -- it -- seven point four million seniors are projected to lose the current Medicare Advantage coverage they have.

That's a 3200 dollar benefit cut.

That's what we're saying more people -- these are from your own more hardware into all of a lot more people signed up for Medicare Advantage after the changed what there's no nobody is his vice president.

I don't know this is Travis well we are -- a lot of the -- to -- But I think it will be better served if we don't keep.

-- each -- that a all right Dan some by -- one count 83 times a Biden interrupted that how effective was that as a strategy.

I think it was totally ineffective Paul at that point I think there might have been about 25 interruptions.

Cook at.

-- just somebody counted there were 83 interruptions and a ninety minute speech and Joseph Biden probably spoke three quarters of the time which -- -- effectively.

Destroyed every statement that Paul Ryan tried to make.

And -- you know buying came across as a bar room or accepted a bar you can say thanks old timer I gotta go.

And for a sixty million people listen -- Don't think that's an option are ideal.

But it was Ryan too deferential.

Given that on -- there's some conservatives who think that he should have been more assertive yeah I think.

Three things I think he was too deferential I think he let -- He let Joseph Biden have the last word on too many things and so forth that said I think he did what he was there to do which is to show he was the vice presidential.

Candidate that he had a good demeanor good argument no one's gonna remember anything bad about what he did.

Joseph Biden and dominated the debate you could say he won but it.

It might be also that he lost -- defeat you know especially once we see the Saturday Night Live portrayal of this evening he might he might have he might have won in terms of these what they hear and read the debate but he wants it if you look at his -- -- are all his life ascension my former colleague mark.

-- since and one of the measures that the debate he -- before them on the -- -- who cuts the -- after the debate.

And the RNC has this -- of laughter Republican cash very very.

Very effective and so forth and I think in the post it -- -- what are people gonna remember there can remember the fine points -- that they're gonna remember.

Joseph Biden to mannerisms -- Michael Goodwin the post today says you know he's laughing at the beginning he was angry at the end it wasn't clear -- the weather is medication was wearing off.

-- -- If it well if if you like Joseph Biden you're happy with that performance of -- -- like Joseph Biden thought it was a war last night.

But what about those people in the middle about those undecided what went what -- you and it what do you think I think that it wasn't just interruptions but the condescending manner that turned off some of those undecided voters and I think.

That that may come back to haunt the ticket later -- Kim was do you think that -- Paul Ryan looked -- -- presidential rose to the presidential level on foreign policy.

He did I mean look that was a bit of -- a mixed performance at times you know he he scored a very heavily talking about.

Libya and Ben -- at the beginning talking about American projection its image in the world.

Some of the focus groups afterwards showed that some people thought of that with some of his most effective lines of the entire debate.

You know -- I think there was less -- a good response on some issues Syria and Iran to a certain degree although the question is again whether or not.

Biden's performance was just so over the top of that did any of that really matter because people were having a hard time paying attention to anything that Joseph Biden.

In the dance Paul this was supposed to be the debate it's called a debate it was not supposed to be at WWF smackdown.

And what I'm saying is that I think most viewers came to -- -- dim because they want to hear the vice president the United States and his opponent talk about the issues that are before the American people right now primarily being the economy.

They were not given the opportunity to do that and the reason they work is because the way.

Joseph Biden behave during the debate so I think he's gonna cost.

The Obama campaign long term among undecided -- any obligation here bill on the part of the moderator -- -- to pick on a moderator yeah.

I I had most to basically make sure people can at least I hear what they I was disappointed I don't think she was biased I know some people say she bias in the questions and so forth.

But I much prefer the first format because I found disconcerting.

Part what -- said.

But partly they were debating with Martha Raddatz one person rather than debating with each other in the American people and if you looked at the split screens they weren't looking at each other.

I found that we had a much more productive debate the last time.

I would rather the issues to be debated be decided.

Less by one newspaper person one.

TV reporter then by the candidates themselves -- it's not -- -- press conference it's a debate right.
