Well both candidates last night hoping to win voters in a debate filled with a lot of heated exchanges but are we the voters winning are we really learning enough.

From either man a question raised by the editorial boards and two major newspapers and our country today the New York Times had this to say about the president.

Quote what he did not do.

Was described how a second term would be more successful than his first is -- And in particular show how he would cut through the thicket.

A Republican opposition.

If reelected the Wall Street Journal with this -- governor Romney saying quote mr.

Romney could have done better making the case for his agenda.

In particular explaining why his policies will work better than mr.

Obama's.

Mr.

Romney is rarely good.

On the why why did they question the big.

Question of course for all of us is that are we getting enough.

-- the big picture.

From either man receive -- foreign affairs congress the Wall Street Journal joins us -- -- Walter Russell -- he's the professor of humanities in foreign policy part college -- editor at large.

For the American interest said do you do you have this same feelings that we're not getting.

The big idea is the big picture Walter and that that really we need -- make this decision.

Well you know I think.

What we've got is the Democrats are trying to protect a system that sort of breaking down it's inching three of the big cities in New York State where the debate was held.

Are on the verge of bankruptcy pensions -- heights Missouri we don't matter general system anymore it's not work and and yet on the other hand there's that we can't pull a rabbit out of the hat you know here's the new system that America will look like in the 21 century.

So I think our politics -- in a bad place because the we've we've outgrown our old way of living and don't yet know where we're headed.

Full -- white will only have a half -- well -- let -- know.

When we have a path.

-- warning sign at least on one path -- there was a line -- from governor Romney which I thought was effective he should have stressed that more.

The road to Greece we are now witnessing here in the United States if you bothered to look across the Atlantic.

Exactly what happens when an entitlement state.

-- two large and you combine that too large entitlement state with a -- growth state that's precisely what's now happening with President Obama.

And I wish that the governor had driven this home.

We have low trend growth that can't possibly afford.

The promises that he is now made -- obamacare so he's doubling down on the very system that is feeling so conspicuously in Europe.

-- the -- -- don't wanna go is different than saying where you actually do -- Gaza saying you don't wanna go to Greece is in the same as saying.

This is going to be the new America here the big new idea is they're gonna push hurt our country -- -- how do we get to that place.

I think it's I mean this is an interest in problem because that the fact is the new hasn't been born yet so you can't point to it already you don't have -- it because we're looking for you guys to give -- -- here's what I don't look.

If you.

It's it's clear I think that a new wave of small business and I -- governor Romney was good about this last night a new wave of small business -- people start using all that creative power in the Internet.

The information processing that now that anyone of us can can get with a personal computer.

There there are millions millions of new businesses out there ready to be created we don't know what they are but creating a a system.

That is incredibly favorable to the organization of these things will allow Americans one at a time to figure out.

There on -- this is this is precisely the right point went.

What governor Romney could -- and I believe in -- million experiments in liberty.

Justice John Stewart nor did we Hulu in nineteen in the mid 1970s that the companies in the future would be companies like apple.

Not sending people -- to space we all figured we'd be in autumn moon off Jupiter back then.

But providing miniaturization.

In a way that we could hardly have have have dreamt of the president keeps saying.

The energy of the future as it is is no wind and solar and -- the president doesn't know the future nobody knows the future.

The future won't won't discover itself and you have to create a system as Walter said that allows a discovery process to take close -- how do we start having that conversation.

It is not showing up in the -- No it it is interesting and I think in some ways it does have to it has to begin at at the ordinary level you know when I talked to my students I teach and they say what do I what am I gonna do where my gonna get a job one of the things -- -- there was.

Well maybe you shouldn't wait for someone to give you would job.

Maybe you ought to think about how could you make a living doing what you really care about.

That we have to our educational system.

Trains Americans to sit still in shares.

For twelve years in rose move when the bell rings and you get a promotion at the end of the year if you follow directions.

Life doesn't work like that look.

Peter TO contrary billionaire entrepreneur Norris pain.

Young brilliant people not to go to college but to come up with new business ideas new business ventures.

That's stuff is happening in United States you know we're not gonna get the bright new future that President Obama was promising four years ago.

Overnight nobody really knows but again the essence is experiments and liberty we know where we don't wanna go and that's and that's you -- up.

What we want to do -- create possibilities.

Where the Mark Zuckerberg it's come up and.

World we're gonna have to leave it there to be interesting to see what we can't come up with in the short time -- towards the end of the year -- a lot of big decisions have to be made in Washington.

And some of these other bigger issues are -- -- necessarily be explored but hopefully we can certainly care.

Thank you gentlemen thank you --
