Let's get right to with our first issue.
Which has to do with kids using Smartphones in order to cheat on tests in school maybe you've heard about this at various school districts around the country.
A real problem with standardized testing and now with technology so readily available.
For young kids there are new high tech ways for them to -- And a solution for this a hand held device used for detecting Smartphone use.
And it's from a company called Berkeley -- tonic systems DBS.
And discussion over as a security expert and CEO.
Be BSE joins us here in the studio good to see Scott thanks very much for coming thanks for having me -- there you -- a lot of different devices that you brought with us we'll get to -- and once in 12 but.
How widespread a problem is this cheating kids using cell phones in order to get ahead school.
It is really widespread now used to be that it would just be kids rating answers in the back of -- -- little notes or things like that now everybody's got Smartphone.
And most kids are getting younger and younger even in a great school middle school high school and of course colleges they've all got phones most of -- Smartphones and they're using them.
And getting smarter using technology to find ways of cheating.
Now I know just as a reporter that I done stories of reported on events -- school district.
Here in New York but also it's pretty widespread down in Atlanta there was a big scandal.
And in some cases -- some of the sort of that the best respected.
Schools in the country.
I'll Wear these kids are facing a lot of competition.
Of course trying to get into colleges and so when it comes as standardized testing -- it comes just regular testing.
-- little -- do anything in order they get a good as a great.
-- and it's a point there there's so much pressure now to get good scores and SATs.
It's getting to a good good school it doesn't matter what it is an Ivy League school whatever sometimes to go to the -- and -- and find ways she can attest he is taking a picture.
To me too quick Google search for the answer or even send us something different -- quick text help me out here on my -- -- -- can speed up.
Your company BBS.
Has been around for a long time yet so.
But this is sort of a new line of products over the last couple of years to to sort of focus in on this particular problem.
-- we've always done stuff for building up the cell tower -- the carriers AT&T and Verizon.
Test equipment but we've done is reduce that down to a small scale something I don't vote like the pocket counter.
Fit into your pocket so you can Covert -- Find out if there's any mobile phone activity tennis and -- -- such as a classroom.
OK so you brought that -- that lets you start in the pocket now that you mention that sure tell us about this device admitted sort of the size of of of cell phone in this -- -- -- that a teacher would have.
Yeah exactly a teacher professor anybody this Procter and over an exam they could use -- to see if there's any cell phone activity.
Typically during the beginning and an exam may professor will say hey.
You know check your phones off -- put them away.
And what they could do is sneak this into their pocket and -- could simply walk around a little do -- vibrate whenever there's cell phone activity -- student will transmit.
When they send text and email Google search -- simply by Britain pocket and make it slowly make their way down the island and catch the unsuspecting student if the cheating.
I see so there -- so there is sort of is a little bit detective work here yet it didn't tell the teacher exactly where that.
That the mobile device was being used but it wouldn't but you can't hurt some focus on topic here there's small lights and as you get closer to the signal strength energy is -- -- stronger signal -- he could simply.
You feel vibration glance down and you could simply say and say I'm getting closer.
I think it's a kidnapped that's very cool and sort of like a metal detector that would -- -- more loudly as you've got closer to yet.
-- one button operation it's under 500 dollars and any teacher professor could use that.
What is that this looks like a bottle of water but it's actually something much there's more to it.
Exactly it what it has is a secret cavity inside of them what we've done is again.
Shrunk down the cell -- detector and would simply is here is a receiver digital board nine volt battery.
And vibrates when you get -- cell -- activities now you can imagine a situation.
-- in -- conference room.
Boardroom where you want to make sure that nobody is listening in.
We're bringing a cell phone and and if they try to turn a microphone recorded conversation take a picture you'll get a simple vibration.
You can actually -- the top drink water is normal too so it's a complete Covert solution but you simply get a vibration in your hands if there's any cellphone.
I think I'll stick with my -- Fox's Doug come under you know my -- But that's very cool.
Let's look at this device you're right here what does that -- -- -- it like.
This is -- cell phone detective this is used you can couple with the direction finding antenna we tend to sell this unit more to.
Government facilities at -- secure skit where you can't bringing.
Cell phones -- confidential information.
You could use this to root out and find cell -- and direction find hunt them down as a person.
And what would be a practical use it in sort of the regular everyday world.
The most -- -- is actually correctional facilities contraband cell phones is a huge problem in every state sure to smuggling phones in in this is used to really hunt the phones down where inmates have smuggled demand.
And -- using them for gang activity.
They're using them for drugs.
Coordinating crimes orchestrating things behind bars there's an opportunity there -- that -- can hunt those down it's very effectively use throughout facilities.
Then what is that's called transit how -- no one detector what's this one but that one -- -- is all of -- have -- the problem distracted driving.
And and that's getting worse and worse as traffic -- worse but buses train operators anybody handling heavy machinery the operators -- that.
That will detect if they're using a cell phone and will -- is simply trigger a camera DVR.
And that way you can catch them in the act of actually trying to text or make a phone call to their friend or girlfriend or whatever the case may be.
So this is that this would be essential I guess you would probably go after.
-- various city transportation agency to that is yes we -- to cover these kind of things you know because again from a news standpoint I can't even tell you the numbers stories.
That we reported over the last five years or so distracted.
Bus drivers were trained operators that resulted accidents and in the worst case scenario people or are killed or or severely injured as a result.
Is that that's the -- problem with the loss of life it's not necessarily catching your teenage daughter that's talking on the phone or texting while driving but more importantly.
Imagine you have several hundred passengers behind you.
So their lives are at stake it it'll takes a second -- -- to take your eyes off the track of the -- And you could run assigned to run a -- whatever the case convene in May affect the lives of those passengers so -- insurance companies of course certain.
Because of the liabilities are driving the technology to make it safer and safer for public transportation and this is certainly -- key tool that's been very effective there.
Of course we know the technology is always changing and people are always try and sort of outsmart.
You know that whatever detective devices are out there -- so are you concerned or how would you -- you and your team.
React -- respond.
If you know some application maker was to come out with something that could maybe -- Some of the products that you've -- Developed it good point -- the advantage we have is a company developing technology primarily for the carriers and service providers.
We're always a year or two ahead of the technology before it's actually widespread deployed so.
As everybody here's the commercials everything's migrating to four -- the fourth generation right we've been selling products for the past 23 years that our fourth generation.
These tools here are already measuring the signals even though the networks are not fully deployed.
So it's important for us to always be doing -- in advance so we could have the latest and greatest and nobody could thwart.
-- -- -- -- -- -- It's is it in the minute we have left up to their pocket town for a minute I know that you've got this in a number of different school districts around the country he.
Can you offer us any sort of anecdotal.
Advice or evidence rather that this is that this is actually working.
Short while on number of professors have been using -- and of course students -- once that gets wind.
-- talked to one another and then throughout the whole school they -- -- They're moderates -- better stuff -- more careful.
And -- -- then naturally becomes a deterrent works very effectively and that's happening throughout different school districts and colleges and universities.
Scott -- is security expert he's the CEO of his company Berkeley and there -- -- systems being.
The S with a number of new devices on the market.
That helps detect cell phone.
Used to the number of different usage is Scott thanks very much for coming in talking to us about this -- all the best.
