The Los Angeles police department is now looking into whether the notorious Manson family could have been responsible.
For more than a dozen murders that have been unsolved for decades on it.
But there's a federal judge in Texas who's blocking access to this potential evidence.
As the story goes Charles Manson and his followers were convicted some four decades ago of some of the most brutal killings in the history of our nation.
A series of grisly murders in the Los Angeles area back in 1969.
Seven victims in all including the actress Sharon Tate who was eight and a half months pregnant.
Charles Manson and several of his followers are still locked up in prison in California but around the time of the original -- one of those followers.
May have admitted to more killings in audio recordings with his attorney.
Now the LAPD wants access to those recordings but the judge ruled the cops cannot have them because they're currently tied up in a bankruptcy case.
-- Dallas and Los Angeles it did -- the cops say that there might really be some evidence on those states.
Well that's the thing -- -- LAPD hasn't yet is exactly what is all of those tapes and what exactly they're looking for now the thing is except for the unsolved murders that happened around the same time that the Manson murders they say.
There are some similarities there because the same time same area.
The -- you're talking about there is Tex Watson he is the Manson follower who was recorded back in 1969.
Speaking with his lawyer.
Watson is also fighting to make sure that these tapes are not released and that federal judge says the LAPD simply.
Has not given him a good enough reason to release them.
But a man who covered this case very closely back in the day says that he thinks there's a lot more of the story let's.
I'm not at all surprised that there might be more murders we -- suspected I think it's time.
That where's the rest of this because we didn't believe that this just happened one time.
Yet Charles Manson thought the murders would be blamed on black militants and that that would start a race war one that he said was prophecy.
In Beatles song helter skelter -- so the Manson follower Tex Watson who's locked up might have something to hide.
Yet he says he's not but then again he is a convicted killer but he did say in -- sworn affidavit in court that.
Look the only reason he wants these tapes sealed is because he believes the police would make them public and that would cause more pain.
For the families of the victims now Watson says he is willing to give police.
Access to the tape saying quote here.
In the eyes of justice I am fully willing for the LAPD to listen to the tapes to satisfy their investigation.
But not to take possession since they are not their property.
LAPD has yet to clarify why they won't take Tex Watson up on his offer.
To at least listened to those tapes -- -- Trace Gallagher in Los Angeles Trace --
