Moving on to the topic now Halloween just days away hopefully here on the East Coast we'll have a nice -- Halloween.

That's big storm coming in all but one of the things and I actually does play into what we're gonna talk about being safe out there a we want to introduce you to -- car president and CEO of safe kids.

Worldwide -- joining us live from our DC bureau thank you so much for being here with us today.

Thanks for letting me have this opportunity I really appreciate it's so important I was going over some of the notes and the things that we want to talk about here today.

I want -- tee it up for you this is trick or treat safety tips for parents and kids.

A -- and here's -- tips right now so why you first tell us about these key safety tips for parents and can't.

Well for parents the most important thing we want to remind them to do is to talk to their kids.

Surprisingly.

Found fewer than a third of parents have a conversation with their kids about safety.

As it pertains to walking safely.

We remind them about checking candy but be sure you remind them of the fundamentals about crossing the street.

Not running into.

Into the middle of the street -- between cars to look both ways and to be extra cautious on Halloween.

Right and you got it even got other tips to share as well we're gonna put those up I think we've got the full screen to cut back up.

Well customs are really important and if you have a light colored cost him the likelihood of -- driver seeing -- is greatly increased.

But -- be careful about visibility if kids are wearing mask what we know that it's going to.

In parent their visit vision to think about face paint or make up.

Make sure their cost him as something that they won't be tripping on or they're not cart carrying a sharp object.

It is and you know when I was I was reading through some of your great tips and points here.

It reminded me of a story that a friend of mine who lived in the Bay Area.

Had a friend that had gone out during the holidays and take it taken a picture of her child in a -- him.

And she was she would look down to FaceBook the picture she wanted to put the picture online share with their friends how cute -- His little Johnny or whatever the child's name was and the child.

Was distracted got away from her and actually drown in a small fountains.

It is just -- like who won the most tragic horrific things than any of us never heard about.

And it just it was such a stark reminder.

Older siblings that go out say -- I'll take so and so -- to go trick or treating a teenagers I assume you really gotta warn them.

Even more.

Well we have to warn everyone so we we want to remind parents who might be using a mobile device teens.

Younger kids we definitely see a correlation between the increase of mobile devices.

And the increase in pedestrian accidents.

So on Halloween when we know that it's already a day where kids are excited they -- how fun but we -- and we want them to be as safe as possible on that night.

So mobile devices down for the evening.

Absolutely and I understand that you guys have been looking out a study I was surprised to -- to read.

That one of the key findings in the report shows that 12% of children five years of age or younger are permitted to trick or treat alone -- well we.

Without parental supervision -- are finding -- saying they don't have an adult with him.

It might peeved that apparent thanks -- its okay that they can go out with an older sibling but in fact we know that kids until there about ten or twelve years old.

Cannot judge accurately distance and speed.

So on a night where they are crossing streets back and forth.

If there are not really able to understand traffic then they really need to have an adult with them.

So parents really think about joining your child for trick or treating it's a fun night for families and you'll have more fun if you're with your kid -- if -- Sitting home alone and Kate let me ask you what do you do when you have a child who's like mom I don't want -- I'm old enough I don't want should come with me in ruin the fun.

And and they really argue with you this is some kind of compromise that you recommend that parents hanging back may be a little bit is there a compromise to be made.

Well -- great question and I think parents have to understand their kids and part of that conversation is explaining why it's important.

That there that's an adult is out there with them that it's it is not to impair their ability to have a great time that you want them to have fun.

And even if you do walk a few steps behind at least someone is out there.

And you can offer to help carry the carry the extra candy or being there to just be a support system.

It's it's about finding the way that you make it fun with your child while making it safe for your child.

-- -- like that I like something you said right there if you tell your child that you need to be there to help carry the extra candy.

How that'll that'll help them out how I I I think I know that one from experience I just brought an -- -- your bag along and can't.

I don't know I think the extra -- here -- you know carry out his candy.

-- right exactly -- can't that -- -- flashlight.

Out I didn't you know I think you know -- one has to say one more thing he said I think that also part about the dark clothing site.

I'm always reminded of that car commercial -- a little boys dressed up as Darth Vader you know the black mask with black -- in the -- everything.

If somebody if you have a child that really -- is really tied to something that dark.

In in terms of from the color of the costume and you reflectors.

If you is that something that you recommend people do.

Absolutely.

And because we know that kids get into their costumes selection and parents get into helping kids with their costumes.

So think about some reflective tape that something that could be put on the sleeve or on the -- star on their back.

Or are reflective -- around and not something that's safe kids gives out -- partnership with FedEx.

Through our our Halloween trick or treat program so.
