I'm going to welcome to our microphones the reverend Dr.

Phil Schneider he is senior minister at the Brentwood.

Christian church and Springfield Missouri and it was that video that went viral its own people -- familiar with.

Video where they twist.

As it was said -- he was -- addressing the city council on the about an ordinance.

There would have expanded.

Rights or equal rights for gays and nondiscrimination ordinance.

I guess you're surprised -- about how.

Viral this became right.

Oh absolutely surprised probably the biggest surprise in my life -- never ever expected to take place particularly its quickly.

As everything happens.

What what I want to play a little bit of it her audience and many of whom have already heard it but what -- into thinking that went into this.

Presentation before you appeared before the council.

-- -- Did I hear a lot of different conversation.

In and around spring -- that.

You know as I was listening particularly true religious -- all out in opposition.

To this ordinance.

Confrontation just sounded strikingly.

Familiar to what I heard about in terms of the 1950s the 1960s and and the conversation that white preachers in the south in regard to segregation.

Abdullah so I started doing some research -- and tracking down some of those sermons.

I -- interest or is it an actuary.

City Council meeting there were several different people say that -- pastors who were speaking there -- And there are variety of ways to approach -- I wanted to do it in a way that -- how of state power.

It certainly did here's a little bit of what you had to say that -- worry about the future of our city.

Any accurate reading of the Bible should make it clear that gay rights goes against the plain truth of the word of god.

As one preacher -- man and overstepping the boundary lines god has drawn by making special rights for gays and lesbians has taken another step in the direction.

Of -- the judgment of god upon our land.

And then you wanted to say this is not we don't care about homosexuals.

But set our rights would be taken away and -- Christian views will be forced on us and our children who would be forced to go against our personal morals.

And -- -- a little word about the liberals are the liberals leading this movement do not believe the Bible any longer but every good substantial Bible believing in intelligent orthodox Christian can read the word of god.

And know what is happening is not of god.

And then the twist we've gotten away from the Bible of our forefathers.

You see the right of segregation.

I'm -- well.

The right.

And segregation.

Is clearly established by the holy scriptures.

Both by precept and example.

-- minute I'm sorry I brought the wrong notes with me this evening.

I -- my argument from the wrong century.

Turns out what I've been reading -- this whole time our direct quotes from white preachers from the 1950s.

And the 1960s.

All in support of racial segregation.

All I have done is simply take out the phrase racial integration and substituted with the phrase gay rights well as a reaction Phil laughter.

Your speech and.

Yeah it was pretty bizarre.

It was a -- -- in City Hall just so many people around.

The county come out.

And so I immediately looked up to the main chamber and went up -- -- -- An odd the moment try to act you can tell there there was a significant impact that it -- -- some folks say about him.

And they said that they felt like watching me but now -- felt like hearty -- and -- good you're.

There was kind of a slow smattering of applause you'll hear sort that very into that video.

But -- a lot because you know.

Oh are -- sure those words some of those popular actually -- to -- or.

Those those words that -- -- her.

And -- -- and and it's really hard to go from.

That deep sense of anger.

General sense -- back quickly.

And so there was however -- do response.

In the room for the most part -- only until I got outside of actual chambers and began to interact with supposed.

The overflow seating groups that we began how to process the moment.

When heavenly ordnance.

It's -- table.

The ordinance was gonna -- -- -- the votes of those on City Council.

But the industry feel that it makes its case derby -- that -- the Bible well.

-- -- pillars are a lot push backs around religious organizations.

In Springfield particularly Christian organizations.

And beat City Council is receiving so much push -- that they decided to table it.

And Alec task force is being developed.

Comprised citizens in Springfield -- Take a look at again reevaluate.

And he'll come back before the council but not too distant.

Sure you're a piece about this and you quote Brian McLaren I'm not sure who he is.

-- who is a privately.

Yeah he's a very influential.

Writer and speaker and activist he used to be a pastor.

And you know and the process.

His own journey he began to reevaluate a lot of commonly held assumption that he had growing up in church.

Assumption Kiet even when he was a pastor -- Still -- -- those folk like grinder like myself we're groping churches you know we're from a very young age that being K -- -- And yeah I -- -- McLaren brought up he says I brought up the famous six or seven Bible passages again and again that they keep getting repeated.

What are the biggest people continue to quote from certain passages as if to prove somehow -- the Bible opposes homosexuality.

As it is -- no -- are there is there no truth to those passengers.

There are a couple of it's safe to say about.

You don't want the ideal of what we have today in terms of two people of -- same gender.

-- and it mutually committed relationship.

Out for a -- of respect.

And look for one another.

That's very different from what the Bible was talking about.

Folks who who compiled the Bible that I have an idea of a orientation.

And as we have.

Idea or understanding today.

And so.

The Bible.

All in one regard.

It.

-- about.

Same gender sexual relationships.

That.

Do not necessarily applied the same way they do today in terms of same gender sexual relationships.

Among people who are committed.

21 another so so that's -- one.

What the first thing to point out is what the Bible -- in about -- large or you know you've got ancient tribal kind of people they.

They needed to procreate as much as possible to be able to send out their -- as much as possible -- And so sexual -- work to people procreation.

Well today today we live in -- world where overpopulation.

Is the problem not.

Not under -- -- have to -- you know that that and I recognize that the Bible you oftentimes it's speaks in particular contact.

Context and circumstances that sometimes a -- reflects the prejudices.

Of the ancient culture so that's one thing I would say.

The second thing I would say at this.

They're all kind of admonitions in the Bible that people just don't take seriously today for instance.

You know the Bible says that you're not so -- with interest to those -- -- vulnerable.

And the Bible is very explicit about this quote here in the state of Missouri we've been.

Working on the minute she needs to -- the -- it would be great.

At 36%.

And in the state -- -- the average.

Interest rate on the -- it -- and the beast or hundred somewhat percent -- go up over a 1000%.

-- by a biblical standard -- dispute in at -- that talks so much about biblical values.

Well you know folks don't -- that -- and I about that kind of stay.

And even though the Bible talks about not only with interest to default -- Many more time and it talked about about homosexuality.

Terrell I appreciate your talking to us any plans for more speeches with -- at the end there.

-- I was again and.

I don't think again replicate this and try to get 2.5 more million hits so all of -- -- They go about -- that -- That's really interesting if people everybody wants to go viral in the Internet and you really can't plan.

You -- -- do something now and I wanted to go viral gonna make -- go viral.

But the reality is something that happens organically not big -- planet and that's I think the beauty of what you -- You never had any idea would create this this -- it's created.

Yeah indeed an incredibly wonderful surprise it's like like cheers bill lot of the other Americus where it's a bigger than marijuana plants or can't airport just.

And the camera.

-- reverend thank you very much for your time tonight.

It's very much of this reverend Dr.

Phil Snyder senior minister the Brentwood Christian church in Springfield Missouri.
