Obama has is the fact that he is currently present -- United States -- incumbent.
Only five presidents -- the past century have lost their reelection for a second term but let's take a look and see why they lost their elections and if the president should be worried.
Right now -- from DC -- presidential historian.
-- -- -- -- -- Good morning Steve let's go back to -- George Herbert Walker Bush president 41 he lost because.
He got hit with a poor economy in -- unfortunate because if you look in the fourth quarter -- -- to actually we grip 4% if that election had been a few weeks later.
He probably would've won and remember -- -- -- 90% in the polls eighteen months before that then the recession hit but we started coming out of -- he just was the product of bad fortune I think more -- -- and Clinton was a good candidate up.
-- I think your your avoiding the elephant in the room what about Ross Perot.
There's a guy Texas businessman who came from nowhere shot up in the polls but what do you end up with 19% of 90% yep event -- -- you from George Bush.
Exactly it is the largest third party candidacy in the twentieth century and have -- probably not been in the race I think bush would've been reelected so.
That's kind of a historical aberration -- bush was okay let's talk a little about a Jimmy Carter.
Lousy economy pluses -- -- -- hostages.
Yeah I mean he just ran into a really bad economy he was also a bad candidate and he ran into -- historically terrific candidate Ronald Reagan.
But -- remember Carter was it either even or -- about a week out and then that final debate between Reagan Carter really put Reagan over the top.
And it turned out to be one of the largest landslides for an incumbent losing in history Jerry forward.
Was widely liked in Washington DC but.
You know a lot of people.
Did not like the fact that he pardoned Richard Nixon that hurt him but I didn't realize how close it was until the very end.
Yeah it's actually the closest election the twentieth -- for sitting incumbent the other incumbent that lost or got blown out.
And had -- not pardoned four by Nixon he probably would want.
Now history remembers the pardon is a good thing -- so history has vindicated Ford even though we lost and he knew he probably would lose if you pardon Nixon and he did it anyway.
Herbert Hoover is synonymous with the the depression back in the thirties and he was absolutely trounced by FDR.
Yeah I mean he stood no chance if it was the biggest drubbing of the twentieth century I think he -- two states and the depression did -- -- But his failure to do anything in response to the depression really did him in as well.
And so that that that along with Carter -- the two biggest drubbing of any incumbent in the twentieth century its interest in that so many of the people who did lose had so much to do about the economy.
And of course on this president's watch right now with Barack Obama.
The economy still sputter along.
Yeah I mean this if the president is reelected it will be a bit of -- historical anomaly given that note the president has been reelected with economy this week so.
This could be a historic election for that reason -- well.
You not only looked -- history but he also look at what's going on in real time right now.
-- take off your historian hat for a moment and just take a look.
What what he is the incumbent but it looks like there's a pretty good possibility that.
This is gonna come down right down the wire and he could lose.
-- capsule it would come down the wire -- if you wanna compared to other races are probably gonna look like Ford Carter in 76 the closest incumbent reelection.
You know the last hundred years.
It all comes down a couple key states I think if Romney wins Ohio is a good chance he wins if he -- -- win Ohio needs to pick up another state whether it's Wisconsin or something else.
I think going to be one of those we elections that go up well into the night.
Well you know one of the the challenger got some really good news last night at 7 o'clock when the de Moines register.
They -- what their endorsement Mitt Romney perhaps in a really tight state like Iowa that could help mr.
Mystery don't always a pleasure thank you very much for joining us on the Sunday morning.
