It was a massive fire last night in New York City that destroyed now I'm told as many as a hundred homes.

In the breezy point section of queens just across the river from Manhattan that's at close -- mostly blue collar community been there for generations of people.

It's on a spit of land that juts out just about two miles south of world famous Coney Island.

A lot of retired cops and firefighters live there have for years and I know -- firsthand.

They absolutely love it or did until now.

Authorities say this fire likely started in one or more homes nearby and the high winds just pushed it from home to home to home here listen.

-- been a very very upsetting situation.

More of my friends lives.

Then houses the lives are worth more than any of the property and this is all that was left after the fire the smoldering ruins today take a look each house burned right down to the soggy fan foundation.

Just a total loss in this neighborhood the fox sports chief correspondent Jonathan Hunt has moved from the spot where he spent the night to breezy point -- morning Jonathan.

You saw a close up what a heartbreaking.

Is just about a half mile to my right here.

I'm cops have very good reason I'm not allowing anything other than emergency vehicles.

To get down -- -- a while ago we did a hike through what -- still badly flooded streets.

And this is what we found take a look.

It is a breathtaking scene it is just not what you expect to see -- a result of a hurricane or any kind of stole home.

Members of the -- a prominent New York still working to put out some of the smoldering flames here.

Among what were people's homes the remnants of their lives still here.

What looks like a graduation program from the school of business administration -- a picture of the Pope.

To wildfires.

The chimney stack standing alone the only thing still up right.

A family homes.

So much devastation -- and so many families who tonight's face the loss.

Of everything they data gathered together in those homes extraordinary Jonathan that they all survived in that neighborhood.

I it it seems nothing short of a miracle that that was not only.

No loss of life.

But according to senator Chuck Schumer the New York senator who we bumped into -- we waded down in through the waters.

-- that -- -- breezy point there weren't even any serious injuries and according to senator -- In the coming months and years we will see a another miracle here because he says these people are truly resilient listen.

They are as they call themselves a hardy lot and they will build this place back but.

It was it was devastating to see -- -- I don't think I've seen any kind of fire like this.

In 37 years that have been elected officials it's incredible and you feel for the people you just feel for what they'll go through.

Senator Schumer also said -- that this reminded him of nothing mall.
