-- hit New Jersey yesterday afternoon getting his first look at that storm ravaged states taking a tour the areas hurting the most.

And try to draw attention to the Garden City get it back on its feet as quickly as possible which we know is gonna take.

Long long time in our Rick Leventhal has been riding this thing out on the New Jersey shorelines is the beginning.

And now he's getting a sense of how devastated things are there's so -- what what can you tell us today.

Well we actually have some good news to report from ocean city New Jersey Martha which considers itself -- -- America's favorite family resort were on the boardwalk.

Which did remarkably good shape.

I mean it.

It's in great shape actually we know from a number of -- boardwalk including Atlantic city's was torn up pretty badly but.

This community is doing OK even though the ocean met -- -- and we'll show you where that.

The storm surge came through watch much of the sand away from the beach in under the boardwalk and the -- -- being credited with protecting much of this.

Barrier island which was under a couple of feet of water and while we make our way down here let's look at some of the video -- -- -- you aerials from a day after sandy hit when much of Ocean City.

And many of the surrounding communities.

Was underwater.

Many homes here obviously impacted by -- floodwaters.

But they are drying out now and if you come back -- you'll see some utility crews.

Down here that have been trying to pull out some of the remaining water -- at the end of six street here right near the ocean.

-- you can also probably -- This pile of sand at the bottom of the boardwalk there where.

-- the beach washed away but you know -- the community is so close and and that's the bad news part they don't have power here.

And there are still down power lines and they're still debris and many of the street so.

The police have set up roadblocks and people can't get -- -- people stayed here during the storm they're still here but they're not letting anyone in until they can get this stuff cleaned up.

And trying to put power back onto it safe for people come back more.

More -- that that boardwalk may end up being one of the only boy -- alike -- that's last in that area.

It's going to be a historic landmark probably age you know when people look back at all this -- the rest of them will completely need to be -- -- I've heard of people sending sort of one representative down to try to get a look at a whole neighborhoods so they can come backing give report.

Are aren't they letting anybody into the area they -- and the sort of report back.

Well again you there are some people who -- still here are some people who rode out the storm.

And we've we made our way down from Atlantic City there is actually power in Atlantic City.

And those casinos eager to reopen but until the evacuation orders have been lifted and they can get -- cleared.

Of -- it's not clear whether that's gonna happen we also saw a lot of utility poles down.

In long war would we saw a lot of stand on the streets in Margate in banner you know there there are still issues out here and there's a lot of cleanup left to be done so.

It's still not safe for people come back to many of these communities and that's what it's set up the road blocks and that's why they're not letting people back -- Things get a little more time and try to be patient which is so hard.

Rick thank you so much -- he's.
