Is episode twelve of the fox hole.
As in the clock is about to strike on this epic presidential contest.
When I said that just now I had in mind one of those stately -- and grandfather clocks like the one that hit the entrance to bat -- But most clocks now just make one of those -- -- chirping digital sound so here to help us swing the pendulum back to the stately and to the grand into the elevated our our political panelists.
Returning to the fox -- as democratic strategist penny -- President of then strategies and former senior advisor to senate majority leader Harry Reid.
And making her first visit to the foxhole is nonetheless a familiar face to Fox News viewers -- Jacoby is a columnist for the hill newspaper and former spokesperson.
For the Republican National Committee.
Thank you both for joining us in the foxhole now one of the advantages of being on a Friday.
When there are not many in media terms.
Is that we always have access to latest jobs numbers each month let's bring up a graphic that shows that about a 170000.
Were added to the economy in the month of October.
And yet the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to seven point 9% still hovering below that psychologically important threshold of 8%.
Probably statistically insignificant but this is the last jobs report will get from the Bureau of Labor Statistics before the election.
Penny how does that play and.
It plays well measure -- here for many of the -- in and actually people that are either put -- -- -- does nothing but good news in this report.
How we are certain CDC a little bit of the upper teeth test seven point nine but that's because more people actually going -- to look for work so that is a positive sign is well.
But if you're -- -- site that.
That means that when the unemployment numbers go down slightly as it's because people left the labor force and so you're obligated seems to me this like that on -- -- -- -- has.
-- -- mean the unemployment or just sometimes and expect and you can always plays -- to figure out what you want to pull out of it that's the most positive there's there's an extended visit and this is a little bit of an extent but it's also put it but it's important to see the progress that we've seen going forward.
Experts are saying his plan going to be about a 100000 -- -- increased 270 -- really plays into the president's narrative which is.
The economy is recovering well but it does not keep pace with population growth correct.
That it is -- and share your thoughts on how -- we also lost the same number of jobs that we -- senate to watch the the jobs numbers are bad.
I don't know how you can spin it it's good when -- stagnation this president promised us five point four.
Up percent unemployment if we just went along with the stimulus package just in this film that the NASA spending and that that was failed.
He's not mentioning that we also still have 23 million people who are unemployed.
This is particularly hard for minorities -- about 15%.
Unemployment much higher than when George W.
Bush was president so overall it's bad news I don't think that is something for the president to brag about -- grating on a curve.
He has detailed and it's -- as -- make this one points I think it's important.
Barack Obama's best month on jobs and unemployment.
Not as good as George W Bush's worst month.
So when he comes in terms of unemployment -- -- and that unemployment percent so.
If he -- to blame bush I mean he he could only hope to have those kinds of numbers so -- -- spent most his presidency trying to keep it.
I -- 5% so.
I think that this president has failed miserably the unemployment numbers show that and we're just getting so used to the bad news that we think that.
Anything if you squint really hard -- you may be sweet and good news out of that but it's just that the case for -- indeed squinting.
Well you know and as -- -- seven point nine is is good when it's going down in battery is going out.
So there are some positive news Saturday and then when he came into office it was about 9% this was an inheritance -- what the policies -- wouldn't it be better -- you would hope what you want it to be better but again we're making the progress and that's what's important to see this trending and they -- certain to come down from -- get it from being what he did inherit background George W.
Bush the economy.
-- -- America down right there are so that we can listen to the candidates themselves for a moment.
Here is Mitt Romney campaigning in Virginia just yesterday on related subjects let's listen to.
And and they give up with the idea last week he's gonna create a department of business all right.
I just don't think another cabinet chairs gonna create the jobs in America needs why he.
For awhile there he was talking about saving characters on Sesame Street and then.
That -- was word games with my name that he was flag and then of course the -- got very anxious and went out there and and this attacked me day in and day out attacking me does not create an agenda for him.
Now these are the closing days of this election cycle and we heard something akin to -- closing argument from President Obama.
Are campaigning in pennies former stomping grounds of Nevada.
Yesterday let's listen to the president -- -- after four years as president you.
You know me by now.
Agree with every decision I've made you maybe get frustrated at the -- change but you know what I believe.
You know I stand.
You know I'm willing to make tough decisions even when they're not politically committed.
You know that I will fight for you and your families every single day as hard about it.
-- Sold -- my opponent can talk about change but I know what real change once like because I've bought more.
I've got the scars to prove it.
Well scars both candidates probably can point to -- on their various persons at this point penny and -- We heard these closing arguments how effective -- -- likely to be.
In the case of the president.
-- he's an -- and saying you know me I'm safe stay with me that's a powerful appeal isn't it.
Well I don't really -- that -- -- that we know him better than we did four years ago certainly I don't think this is necessarily to his favor but if you notice in his closing arguments he did not.
Point to a single achievement he did not point to a creating jobs because he has and he can't point to any of his.
-- legislative initiatives that have resulted -- anything positive for the American people he's just saying.
Yeah I know maybe it's not great -- you know Lisa stick with me I don't think that's a powerful appeal in the closing days when you're asking the American people to reelect you need it.
-- next to him -- just alone speech of which we only took about forty seconds in which she did talk about some of his accomplishments but penny going to you.
But when we see President Obama talking about big bird.
I'm talking about Romney Asia and playing and cutesy games with the opposing candidates name.
Isn't he in fact running the very kind of campaign that he warned against in 2008 when he said.
You know in essence I'm paraphrasing if you don't have a record he can run on you -- the other -- someone to run from.
If you can't make the election about big things you make about small things.
-- -- -- -- -- Knowing that if campaign they have run a very shrewd campaign and they know exactly what they're doing to be able to turn out the type of people that they need to to be able to win the country to campaign wish they want to win.
So whether or not it's in the lineup from Asia which is very popular out there whether or not it's in the in you know trying to say you know what that is about big bringing remember why why that came about which was Mitt Romney refusing to say we remember why it came of it.
So silly -- so -- -- we look at the candidates are out there and they are these are the last moments in these campaigns and there's a lot of spaghetti that's been thrown against -- to see what's gonna stick.
But they are making effective -- each -- in their own ways -- make it effective closing arguments for their own constituency that question is whether or not they can persuade that independent voter.
OK let me start with you on this penny because I think we're gonna run out of time shortly but I wanna get you both on the record on this subject which is Ben -- and foreign policy in general.
Fox News has been covering this story aggressively so -- CBS news in fairness to the so called mainstream media Newsweek Daily Beast has been a leader on the Ben -- story.
How much do you think it matters.
I think they're gonna last closing argument senator really matter all that much and I think when you look at the list of things that -- concerns foreign policies -- number nineteen out of the list of twenty.
It just hasn't really been that resonated with people so I don't think -- -- -- -- well foreign policy is important -- -- he's usually important issue at least it should be the president's trying to run out the clock on this hoping that that people don't quite understand.
What all of what the issue is and he's doing that with relative success.
That the issues -- -- interest in foreign policy should be interested.
In effect you the president to a stonewalling in not answering the questions very important questions from members of congress and the public at an foreign policy aside.
And that's a huge issue of all right it's not gonna go away we'll hear about it more after the election we hope we hear from both -- you more after the election -- thanks to.
-- and -- to -- us up next a former staff aide to Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.
The man in fact too is the king of all think -- thinkers.
One of the true Weisman of the nation's capital here in the fox -- stay here.
