Welcome back to a spirited debate well a Catholic priest in Colorado says.
Vice president Joseph Biden should not receiving communion because of his public stance on issues that run counter.
To church teaching.
On that topic begins the faith panel and joining me from Los Angeles Merriam movement dean.
Communications coordinator for the Muslim Public Affairs Council and here on -- is rabbi Steve Burton managing director union of orthodox Jewish congregations of America welcome to about.
Thank you break.
This may seem like an odd thing to do is discussing between someone who is a Muslim -- -- who is actually do is.
So actually it -- It bodes well for in terms of how -- an outsider would actually look at this and in would you be affected by this and we're gonna start with you when you hear -- A Catholic bishop or Catholic priest saying.
That a politician a Catholic politicians should not be offered communion.
Because of his political stance on things like abortion -- same sex marriage what do you think.
Honestly when I heard the story.
They made me a little sad it is for me it's that all religious leaders clergy are everybody is here to bring people to -- Bring people to love bring people to peace and and -- -- I is that judgment on who he is a lot of young people have different viewpoints.
And -- different topics and I don't think that religion should ever be a place of restriction is always the police opened doors and allow people come -- and to save act is just.
It's -- is that is more about let's bring people it is -- -- people awake but people closer to god.
Yeah I'm a bit bit from a -- point I'm not Catholic but I do you know I understand -- -- my view that you know.
They're saying you can't separate these two things is that your values really are part of who you are -- Catholic values -- -- who you are so.
That's part of their reaction and one of the yet what things at Joseph Biden had -- as my religion defines who I am and I believe.
I have been that I and I have been a practicing Catholic my whole life and that's particularly -- -- my social doctrine.
Catholic social doctrine talks about taking care of those who can't take care of themselves people who need help that's one of the things that Joseph Biden said.
-- right.
Your reaction to you -- to this whole issue of withholding communion because this -- been an ongoing issue for Catholic politicians.
-- Look I -- I I looked into it -- and -- either with the -- said was he didn't say we're gonna withhold he said.
You know Vice President Biden knows better than to come here it and I think what he was trying to say and I think people have to understand is that when you get into an argument -- two sides.
And it doesn't go automatically mean everything is always okay and and I I actually agree -- that the religion really is there to cover people but.
You know when you when you get -- an argument over religion today and say yeah you know I see you're totally wrong but I should be able to walk in here tomorrow and everything should be okay.
It's not so simple so you know what I said with a -- said.
I'm Jewish and you know our laws -- feel differently I don't know if I would have but still I understand the hurt that's going on on the other side.
-- what things -- that deep I think a lot of people that are sort of secular kind of world do not get is that you know religions all religions have rules.
And these rules like -- all groups have rules for weather and you have four.
Deciding who is -- who is out and one of the things that you know.
Catholics have is this issue of community no I don't Protestant.
I can't take communion.
In a Catholic mass and I understand that and -- so.
Miriam I'm wondering is is it easy is it unreasonable to expect that you know a Catholic bishop or priest wouldn't say.
Would expect that.
Someone like Joseph Biden or Nancy Pelosi was also very botched you know pro pro choice.
And say you know what maybe you should excuse yourself couldn't communities -- not really.
Analyzed for teaching.
I mean I.
-- -- -- -- -- Really good point that religion and politics -- -- for her feeling -- there's two different sides.
What I disagree with is that when it comes to.
The house of god house of worship -- also be allowed in and clean is a really big deal on a Catholic -- I think there's several masses as well.
And not being Catholic I haven't gone up between knowing that these are the -- of the rules of what it is to be Catholic.
However before a Catholic got to be able to take that.
It -- -- really -- -- to me is that.
Is that why bring people away from god when you people to god and may be able to gather and and who knows where I mean you know.
When it comes politics as -- -- everything changes everything evolves everything.
Is so -- -- a so fluid and where Biden stands where.
The vice president viewpoints are it's to me is does not want to child's -- in the house of worship should be open to all is his.
To me in it honestly makes me sad when.
A worship our -- -- -- even a non believer cannot come in because of what might what might perceive as being a different viewpoint.
Yeah -- that I data have been I think both -- riding -- three of us could not get communion and the rules and when you put a really really well.
In religion are two ways look at religion as an arts.
Or as a science meeting in size the rules I can -- -- -- outside threat but it's really blue and there are rules to that most people.
Kind of like to look at the religion is an art there are subjective whatever makes us feel good is good that's not really the -- most religions work and I think you make a great point that there are rules.
And with respect those rules and now again it may not be up to the bishop it could be up to the Pope could be up to whoever -- -- system works but there are rules and people you know need to respect that.
