We're on the southern tip of Manhattan the area known as the battery named for the battery of -- erected here in the seventeenth century to defend the young city.
But nothing but defend New York City from the wall of water that came crashing ashore in one of the biggest storms so far of the 21 century.
-- a huge portion of the eastern seaboard is crippled tonight millions of viewers cannot see this broadcast because they're heading into another night in the dark.
American families are trying to recover from a devastating blow super storm sandy.
What was billed as the biggest storm to ever hit the Atlantic coast delivered a crippling blow to the northeast.
Hurricane turned monster storms sandy took the top spot in the news cycle this weekend -- the media often get criticized for.
Typing or over hyping these things how they do this time well I think that pat Howard Kurtz and CNN said it was -- but this is the rare storm that actually lived up to his hype this was everything the weather forecasters said it would be -- problem may be too little -- worse.
And I think that coverage it was.
Give needed proof that elections on certain we are all what we hear apartment election and our document the storm and I think rightly so this is a bigger story frankly.
Do do the media approach the coverage with an agenda or is it just to tell the stories.
I think there is a kind of there's a desire on the part of the media to make it a big story.
And there was a little of that before the actual event but I think that.
The social media were out there ahead of the main stream media.
Because before this was a storm it was a hash tag.
Which was Franken storm you know we were already anticipating what happened so I in this case.
You know if anything you could say the media didn't warn people now but that would that the problem.
With social media is that sometimes bad information gets out there and moves faster than her and it's I have to go to the weeds hash tag before the storm.
You have to get you have to kind of -- which -- were you follow on Twitter -- -- you -- and FaceBook and and and you know.
Pick your sources carefully this is so much stuff out there to wade through to get all the right information.
That it didn't take long though for.
Liberal media took trot out climate change as the as the reason behind this.
Yeah and then it's it and -- -- right I mean -- the height of the storm before hand if it's somebody who doesn't live on these Gosselin Los Angeles.
You know most people I think we're looking at this as saying yet again there's a big hype about an oncoming storm.
And we weren't really paying attention until we started to see the that Twitter.
Photos and first hand accounts.
And then to start immediately seen the liberal media start to talk with -- -- Governor Cuomo of New York -- I don't -- -- brought this -- -- -- says let's blame the media all of it and it was certainly better than fifty years we've only -- this and wondering if something like -- being conservative Governor -- that's what -- what he's not the media -- -- -- -- -- for the people of the state.
I have to admit though that even the global warming thing -- -- that there were news figures saying and so the reporters obviously were eager eager eager to bring that.
Angle up but I want to just highlight what I think is the worst.
Coverage of this whole thing which -- Brian Williams.
Rock Center.
Doing a segment on Alec Baldwin who many of you will know as an NBC.
Employees so -- NBC employee -- NBC employee.
Saying Alec Baldwin is busy volunteering on behalf of people in this building in his neighborhood had been in New York City he does -- -- camera and then it was on camera.
I mean getting getting completely total puff job from NBC and it was that the size -- the product placement of this it was just.
There's other aspects ballot bowl of personality which are and the other than other -- altruism.
Including going to start there they -- levels altruism that terrible -- Emmy nominations just around the corner -- -- I -- that Jim brought in this.
-- a copy of the New York Times from Friday but I I just wanted to highlight and I don't know if you're gonna highlight this but it it did manage to include the that storm propels Bloomberg New York city's mayor on into Obama's corner so they managed to to find room for that on the front page.
Well this was clearly a very important endorsement and it was unexpected because Mayor Bloomberg had been fairly critical of president Obama's.
Performance -- well and and as they are still cleaning up this storm there are a lot of people pretty critical of mayor Bloomberg's -- -- -- front page news in in New York paper that the New York mayor unexpectedly endorsed the president United States.
But about money was paid his time critical ally I think surprised about with Mayor Bloomberg it's always unexpected but that -- -- -- at Everglades -- terrible and -- Was not at the Republican Convention.
Not a Republican he didn't speak really that was the point it was a one time -- he's not politic after a while we are excited but he's he's supporting the Democrat I like what Dave why -- slate said OK maybe make maybe Obama right now should get.
Bloomberg who's endorsed him to not run the New York City Marathon in the middle of all of us who knows tragedy and so on end.
Again we'll see if -- other people make that linkage between.
Bloomberg and Obama.
On that score.
-- that's the thing I mean -- if the -- Mayor Bloomberg is getting more and more criticism from people on Staten Island and elsewhere who.
Who say you know your -- police are resources away from from us to run -- marathon and that sort of thing.
I mean this could become a real problem for him politically yet there's no question at first I think their home media narrative.
Was that this storm was gonna help President Obama.
He ran out there with bomber jacket and the images of him being in charge -- something that.
We all I guess wanted to to see in the media really wanted to tell.
But at the end of the day.
It didn't really go that well we've seen New Yorkers who are still without electricity still without heat and yet Obama is now off doing something -- I think.
This whole bomber jacket is -- is it perfect symbol for a shallow.
You unemployment and Chris Christie also had a bomber jacket it would just -- -- out of my definitely less I think I say let's look at the jacket I think it has a symbol of what's wrong -- I think that Reagan bush 43 I will make -- -- -- would have to split screen.
Bush -- three campaign for re election and people Staten Island looking for their power.
Considering where this storm here hit and the media's usual attention span how long is sandy and its aftermath going to get coverage.
Well in New York metropolitan area it's going to get a lot of coverage and -- because we are still or some Abbas are still so devastated by it.
But I think that over all the media is going to move on -- the election.
There is going to be second day story on mayor Bloomberg's decision not to cancel the marathon I suspect that that's going to get that a lot ignore.
This weekend big debate this weekend and I just have to give a shout out to Janice Dean.
Was talking about how bad it could be.
Eric Whipple who blogs for the Washington Post apparently slammed her and said that -- given what we know about the storm is it makes its way toward landfall.
Is it too early to vindicate the hyperventilating Deen and her employer.
No way well mr.
Whipple.
You're not apparently a meteorologist Janice did a great job.
