-- one of the country's largest newspapers is now joining a growing number of media outlets switching their endorsement.
When President Obama to governor -- the New York Daily News traditionally.
Leans Democrat.
And they say in their endorsement this quote we valued president Obama's pledge to govern -- bold pragmatists pragmatism and bipartisanship.
The hopes of those days went unfulfilled.
And the daily news is one of nearly a dozen newspapers that have switch sides.
Some of the more prominent ones include Houston Chronicle the Des Moines Register which shouldn't really made a big splash with their switch to Romney also the Orlando sentinel.
Is among those that have come out some pretty surprising switches in terms of endorsement -- -- governor Romney.
Let's see what to a market friends think about this -- -- is as a senior writer with the weekly standard.
At a Fox News contributor Juan Williams is a Fox News political analyst welcome gentlemen good to have you -- -- -- -- is that -- you what do you think it's.
Well it's interesting -- it's certainly the case that we're seeing many more newspapers switch from.
From the Obama too Romney side than we are seeing people go the other way I guess my real question is.
Are these newspapers either persuading their readers or are they reflecting the views of their readers I mean isn't the case that what we're seeing in these editorial page switches.
Where is representative of what we might be seen particularly in the swing states from voters who who were Obama supporters.
In 2008 and are now not only going to you know not vote for President Obama again.
But may come out and and support Mitt Romney that's the big question.
You know you get that sort of big picture feeling when you read it -- editorials -- and I'm reminded of Caroline Kennedy's editorial.
Backing President Obama when he was running saying that she had not seen anyone like this since her father and then he reminded.
Her of all the things that she was told about her dad when she was growing up and -- -- that.
Feeling is not there anymore -- -- I don't think that that's going too far out on a limb I mean that the president has for years under his belt now.
And is being judged very differently by some of these people who were you know very got you got over the -- for this candidate last time around.
Well that's why I think it's inevitable that you're gonna have more newspapers switching Monica because.
Clearly the level of excitement and the newness of the Obama campaign 08.
Is not matched by what's going on here -- twelve for a sitting president.
And then of course the you've had some newspapers that have gone the other way I think the most notable one is and Winston-Salem.
Where that newspaper that endorsed McCain now is endorsing Obama but they're very they're -- those because they -- had fewer.
I think there's much more for Obama lose in terms of all the excitement from -- that going to today.
What's interesting to me to pick up on Steve's point about the influence of this is I think people -- Judge -- publication its credibility amazed they pay attention to the argument -- your newspaper readers overall.
But when you look at the newspapers argument I think people that have to make a judgment in New York the daily news said.
The economy is the whole ticket I don't think people gonna argue too much about that although.
Given the New York democratic roots I don't think that they're gonna change New York from -- Obama's state to a Romney -- Yeah you know it's yet I think Steve -- your point it is well taken are they sort of picking up on the sentiment of the people in their state.
He also point out that these papers that have made big switches several of them are in battleground states.
-- used to be I think that that an editorial could hold a lot of -- could lead people in one direction but we may find out the other the -- -- -- a horse from the other direction.
Well you know -- in some place like the de Moines register -- -- into -- register which hasn't endorsed or hadn't endorsed a Republican going back to the Nixon era.
Makes an endorsement the endorsement carries -- not only because of what the actual argument is.
But because so many people are talking about what the actual argument -- -- you've had a series of discussions for several days about the fact that the de Moines register.
And several other prominent newspapers in Ohio endorsed Mitt Romney certainly the Romney campaign.
He's making a big deal -- so while I'm skeptical of that the ability.
Of the newspaper endorsements to really sway an election hiding the fact that.
That people are talking about it that they made this argument and that it was a prominent switch that's what's important.
Thanks so much Shannon.
