As the campaign was hitting some hard times in September.

Fundraising -- sort of flattened volunteers were tired.

And stepped forward.

And energize this campaign.

He helped bring the volunteers to their feet.

Tremendous boost to our fundraising.

I spent a lot of time for -- Maine and Maine tourism.

And I've never yet said this.

But I hope that man never comes to me.

Almost 200 years ago.

This dirty souls who founded this -- Settled on a slogan to -- go.

You in the state of Maine gave our slogan.

A new.

A new slogan a new motto.

And we should change it to -- Thomas.

That -- We -- And is leading by saying that we're tired of the political divisions.

That are keeping us from solving real problems.

We are tired of politicians whose main.

Aims to be to divide us instead of unite us.

-- is leading by saying that what we want is listening instead of lecturing.

Compromise instead of confrontation.

And solutions.

Instead of slogans.

People don't care who gets the credit.

They don't care who's winning and losing from year to year.

What they want is a strong economy.

A fair settlement to our debt crisis strong defense.

Care for veterans schools.

That were.

And they're tired false choice that always seems to confront.

As a guy said to me early on this campaign.

I've always wanted a chance to vote for none of the above.

You're in.

And I'm convinced that across this country.

There are others who agree.

And want to follow -- I'm optimistic that today's vote in the message -- -- can make a difference in the poisonous atmosphere.

Of American politics today.

Because in the -- of human history and government they're always been times of differences and divisions.

But we also know it doesn't have to be that -- We know this because when a crisis comes we find we're not that far apart after -- In -- ice storm we've reached out to neighbors that we hardly -- In the aftermath of the terrible morning of September 11 the entire country came together.

As -- seldom had before.

And just last week a hurricane and a good old nor'easter met in the north Atlantic and slammed ashore in New Jersey.

And made improbable allies of an embattled governor.

And his political opponents the president of the United States.

Division is natural but we're all made with different needs different talents and different attitudes there's nothing wrong with -- indeed it is the strength it is a strange.

Because it leads to debate and ultimately.

To better solutions.

But sometimes debate can go too far.

Sometimes it becomes difference for the sake of different.

An argument for the sake of argument.

And when this happens.

We are all the -- for.

The people.

Are the poor.

And so tonight the people of Maine have said -- not.

This far and no farther.

We respect political.

Differences but we want to move a little close.

To the center to solutions.

-- ability.

To mutual respect.

That's the message.

But today.

Today with the -- bad.

Today with the votes cast by the people of Maine.

We got a little close.

They're good honest hard working intelligent capable people in both parties and all across the political spectrum they have good productive and needed solutions to our problem.

And tonight they got a little close but.

We've seen a lot of this campaign season focus on negatives and what drives us apart.

But tonight.

We're a little closer.

And the people of -- in this country have been working for four years to escape this Great Recession.

And to find solutions.

To our common challenges.

And today.

We -- close.

Today.

-- people showed that being fiercely independent.

Doesn't mean you have to be fierce.

Tomorrow and for the next six years.

My simple goal is to keep proving that.

To be a -- between my new colleagues on either side of the aisle.

To bring people and our country close.

To that more perfect union invasion.

By -- founders.

It may feel at times that we're far apart.

The dancers are just getting further out of.

-- but the overwhelming message from this election is that we're close.

And people want us to get close.

My mandate is clear.

To listen to the best solutions from every corner and help my colleagues to find common ground and that for Goldman's.

It's sitting right there in front of us and we are ready to rock walk across.

To get closer once again.

Tonight Maine -- sense really of -- important lessons and tonight.

We need.

Can.

At the moment of the worst divisions ever faced by our country.

A young lawyer fresh from the -- spoke to his fellow countryman.

Of the ties that bind us and the urgent imperative.

That they not be allowed to break.

His words that day felt largely on debt fears.

And it it took a terrible war to prove him right for all time.

But his eloquent vision can still speak to us today.

And I fervently hope that we can listen better this time.
