And without it Democrats and Republicans and government at all levels to put the people.
Before the politics.
I believe in America.
I believe in the people of America.
OK okay.
And back.
Was the acceptance speech at the acceptance speech -- victory speech of Barack Obama you may remember that guy he's -- your president.
For nearly four years and he -- be your president for four more.
And that was Willard and Romney.
Who holds the distinction of losing the presidential election and this is power play and I am Chris -- -- And there was an open question this year in politics.
Could Barack Obama win a second term in -- most -- -- way.
A way that really nobody never done before which is this.
No president has ever been reelected.
With they -- And he got the electorate he wanted it is smaller turnout than 2008.
And he got the win he was looking for.
How did it happen what does it mean.
We'll tell you because we have a whole hour with -- Internet we have and an hour.
To look back to cast our -- backward but also to -- targets forward to what it means for Washington.
And you and why the stock market seems upset and all of this stuff.
But you know who's not upset you know who keeps good cheer no matter what.
Jonah Goldberg is the editor at large of national review online.
And -- -- do you have cheerful that's in your heart today.
Well after I got out of my system by beating a man to death yeah.
Common and everything seeming a little better and you have big feet.
So that you have a -- that was probably -- security grueling experience remember that was.
Good thankfully things like Peter so big it doesn't take long to beat him in the death of one of my shoes -- you just you run out of I mean you know you just run out of steam you get a good -- chalk up yes exactly all right so.
Here's a question.
There was a very open question I put it that 55% probability -- Obama gets reelected 45% probability Mitt Romney wins.
And the president did everything that he and his campaign said.
They were gonna do it even a little bit more they rated them into the southeast and they did -- -- a base for his base election.
What's your assessment.
I'm it was a shellac and I don't know lacking it was a good narrow list but -- popular vote.
-- it it was a shellacking in this sense I mean commitment it maybe that's unfair it was a self shellac and if if you if you talk to have you talked to almost anybody in this business.
On the -- sort of on the right side of the aisle.
I'm coming up on this election the whole bottle was we're gonna be that the -- that the Romney campaign was gonna build on McCain.
Is going to do McCain plots.
And the whole idea was that the McCain coalition the McCain turn out in a down year for Republicans.
In 2008 that was the floor that Romney was going on build on and instead.
It's a frightening prospect but it's looking more more like that was the ceiling.
If if Romney simply got as many votes is John McCain -- 2008 he would -- want them.
And that is an incredible indictment -- -- -- -- it's an indictment of yet I mean we are in the early days of -- door and we don't know.
Exactly who's -- to be led to the guillotine but we know that the guillotine has got to be sharpened.
All right so and -- to that point.
You know.
It's not like the Republicans had another better option is -- it's not like there was somebody who.
Certainly when McCain lost there were people -- -- -- they depict Romney instead or.
Pick somebody else instead of John McCain.
They might have done better.
In the 2008 climate as it was it was -- somebody that somebody else Republicans should affect.
That's that's a tough and unknowable question and I think the consensus has been for awhile that our field 12012 the Republican field -- was not all that wonderful.
And that Romney was -- the best choice as it seemed at least on paper of a bad field.
I'm and I have I am I am respected and similarly for Mitt Romney he campaigned his heart out.
But I also think that the strategy that the campaign used the theory of the electorate that they used was deeply flawed and a lot of people -- -- Steve Hayes and others.
Were saying that.
Around times of the can run comic conventions.
And sort of stopped when it looked like -- and turned it around after the first debate.
But it now seems like I think that that that that was right that's -- Stephens.
Opposition to ideology opposition to making an argument about ideas -- determinations -- -- that campaign sort of a Michael Dukakis -- campaign.
Was a big mistake.
Unprovable but that's how I feel my gut and I I look forward to the the bitter recriminations and arguments to come.
Yes because it's a lot of those will happen over drinks and that's always good.
Also I should maybe just point out that Americans don't like to elect people from Massachusetts.
It seems like it's been since about 1960 that that happened.
Yeah I think that's -- and.
I mean -- this piece for a while there's something about Massachusetts that produces politicians.
That really -- work anywhere else in America Michael Dukakis John Kerry.
Bill weld Barney Frank whose earnings and Mitt Romney.
Hum there's something about what.
Then what people Massachusetts to find likable on these guys that just doesn't translate very well outside of the border.
They also like clams a lot I don't know if that is connected to it in any way.
-- and we know that you were going to go to the movies with your wife today will you tell us what film you're going to say.
I'm going to see Argo.
I -- -- write up a review of it when I get a chance I am I'm I always -- my wife.
Yes you -- -- that if you you you -- her way gave more than that my friend way -- -- very small down payment as a means on the pillow in terms of the I got out of hand and I -- my life.
What John and we thank you for your help and I -- what you've been great throughout the election cycle for us here at fox and we just thank for all that.
Bags and as a viewed either as you have have you and great work last night and I hope the -- of you guys vs Karl Rove last night was one of the best hours of TV and while.
Well I want to say this I was terrified I would -- thoroughly thoroughly.
Terrified.
But we live to we endured and we survived John and enjoy Argo and best your wife.
Keep up -- -- -- all right okay Internet we're gonna take a quick break and what journalists.
Talking about there I guess I have to call it on myself last night Karl Rove said that we on the decision desk and called Ohio -- correctly.
And some people on the Romney campaign tended to agree with that assessment.
And we were taken to task but we stood and delivered and Megyn Kelly came -- did her very best cross examination.
Of our call on the state of Ohio we were right out there with it.
And it was totally fun once we got through the whole terrifying part.
But we will talk more about that we'll talk more about the race we'll talk more about the through school -- if and everything else that -- you Internet.
In the rest of the Obama era.
So stick around.
For two years our house majority has been the primary line of defense for the American people.
Against a government that spends too much taxes too much.
Certainly borrows too much was left unchecked.
And at the Braves have a staggering national deficit threatens our children's future -- a jury -- the budget that begins to solve the problem.
Now while others shows in action in the face of this threat.
-- we offered solutions.
And the American people want solutions.
And tonight they responded by every -- in our house Republican majority.
Okay.
And that man will continue to be the speaker of your House of Representatives Internet.
John Boehner the gentleman from west Chester Ohio.
Because not only did Republicans hold their majority.
Which is was a historically large and usually large Republican majority very often when problems get the majority in the house it's.
Itty bitty.
But not only did they keep a large majority generation only large but they added seats that's just add seats -- the top of the ticket loses and all that stuff that they've redistricting.
And they ran a very tough campaign.
And all of that stuff.
And it sets up a bizarre moment in American political life this continuation of deeply divided government as we always like to say.
Here we have the most liberal president since Lyndon Johnson.
And the most conservative house.
Since Nicholas longworth was the speaker back in the twenties so we have this huge divide.
And big problems to solve the starting right now -- -- the fiscal cliff which refers to.
The moving expiration of everybody's tax rates everybody pays taxes tax rates.
We also have automatic.
Reductions in future spending on defense programs and social programs we're also going to run out of the power to borrow money to fund the government we've got all kinds of stuff coming up right at the end of the year.
And it begins today John Boehner is going to go forward and lay out.
His position and he's gonna talk about that.
So how does this all work out how does this work out you know who already knows.
They already know they knew it way before I mean before the polls -- -- close they knew it is well with me here in New York.
For reasons that she will not make entirely clear.
Penny -- she is the president and principal -- strategies and that's a reference to that diagram that overlaps and finds the common space in between.
But she was known before that as -- senior advisor to senate majority leader Harry Reid.
She's worked with Ed Rendell democratic governors pretty big deal patriotic -- -- -- -- -- -- Also a big deal.
And also patriotic and also etc.
-- -- -- -- Is Brad Blake -- He has been an advisor to both bush is -- -- and help them.
Win elections and there were a couple -- there's one they didn't win but we won't bring that up today Brad.
And and Brad is also a professor at the Georgetown University.
Go play -- and show.
Brad we will start with you because you are keeping studio three warm for us and the state.
We will start with this question John Boehner today and I'm told him and put my I'll be back and that's what that is that's how you hear Brad.
But John Boehner today I'm told -- senior advisors.
To -- house speaker is gonna go out and he's gonna say look.
We are going to.
We except that revenues which is the way people say taxes and they don't -- taxes that revenues are gonna increase as part of whatever deal goes on.
But they want a fairer flatter tax code.
And they want to see changes to entitlement programs are talking about going -- -- and can't today in the face of a president who just won reelection.
Make that stick.
Yes they can and here's why this is Groundhog Day.
The government is the same today as it was yesterday.
The good news is we don't have to wait for president to be inaugurated for him to act the president is the president today he'll be the president on January 20 the next four years.
We should do is go back to Simpson -- everybody knows with that is it was a presidential commission I use that as say as a platform.
By which to go forward but our problems are too great the electorate we know was polarized the president got less support this time they did last time.
There's realities that need to sit in on both parties and if we -- out of reality instead of ideology we will make deals the deals got to start today.
Okay now.
-- The the Republican idea of what a deal is in the democratic ideal about a good idea of what a deal is what I think -- -- -- exactly whatever you think are two different things.
But this now happens under a tremendous amount of pressure.
Because if they don't find a way to come up with a deal and you know previously and I should point this out -- and -- this is something for you to think about.
Previously the idea was that if there was a change in Washington what would happen would be a short term extension of what was going on.
And then when you have a new congress or new president or -- whatever that -- come back into a long term deal.
Now it's status quo -- And if they don't do something by the end of the year everybody's taxes go up and they cut the defense budget.
He knew there is I love this part and this time of Washington because everybody has thrown scenario what they think is the best solution of what's gonna happen -- -- department our investigation of what what or -- I still think that -- shortness of the -- doctors and a forced a temporary settlement using those I don't have to I still think they're gonna have to kick it to next year mean to battle tax reform in you know.
Mean you really probably have about twelve legislative working days.
Even though -- six weeks is probably only about twelve legislative working days it is not enough time -- so they -- gonna find a way in which to.
Make sure that the markets even though they're reacting a little bit today.
-- to the Mac is the markets are calm.
And that we don't -- it go over completely over this fiscal cliff that we have some sense of continuity that we have some sense of security going forward.
And that they know what they're doing well of course I think -- an address in a very short term.
Kind of -- meaning bargain per say your release to save the minibuses -- -- on the -- hasn't -- that that.
To keep their want function and they have this grand.
Conversation.
Company twenty searching -- -- like I -- you know and it's going to be interesting.
Because they think unassailable even though the Democrats held on the senate.
Senate is a different make up it's a much more the Liberal Democrats that are coming and yeah off and on the river right a lot more conservative and that was gonna make a really and big check.
-- I wanna ask you bet that you talk with the need to find the metal.
But the Democratic Party is more liberal than it was there a Democrat -- the composition of Democratic Party in Washington.
Next year will be more liberal than it was this year the composition of the Republican Party looks to be even more conservative.
And it was last time the because of this close low turnout election.
The bases were heard from.
That that doesn't bode well for a big deal does it.
Well look -- it may not even in it in 2008 but it -- in 2012 here's the reason.
The -- is coming.
Either we're all gonna go off together.
Or we're gonna find some way to avoid it and make it less painful for every American it is clear we've kicked the can down the road as far as we're gonna get.
We need answers to it to big problems and the American people spoken for both -- To what within the American people have said then you know a pox on both houses.
We've got to do this it's in the best interest of the country to do it.
And -- and off and let's get the job done I agree with -- We you know we could have a short term deal provided that that.
At least there's some consensus.
On the big issues that we're -- -- face in January.
We just can't say well let's -- would deal now and and and -- in January that's not enough we've got to go to work today.
And make sure that those that we have at least.
A good road map so that -- deal to me they quickly in January before the president's inaugural that's a -- And -- and who's the supposition would be if it wasn't short term deal.
Basically what the president gets for winning what a billion dollars.
By -- is -- for -- the short term.
-- 250000.
Dollar and current tax rate would revert to the cold rate which is more.
-- That's that's this shape of it right he had that this is exactly at you know let certain ones expire the Republicans can say we can't raise taxes on our hands it was just an expiration of of existing and -- we reverted back to you know.
Whatever formula that they want to say thank you really think that the American people and I don't think we had a mandate it was not a mandate that election last night.
But I think what everyone is looking for is the president to have his sister soldier moment and is he going to stand up in his second -- in his second at term.
And have those moments where he can go to the progressives and say we are gonna have to take a few more cuts on the domestic -- we are gonna have to do entitlement.
At the same time Republicans I'm asking you also have your leadership moment.
And take a look at ways in -- to do.
Revenue -- so really I think American is asking for the president to be what he was -- -- what he ran as a 2008 and be that leader but they've all been asking him to be.
Grace that is what she is talking about that is what Americans are apparently craving.
Is somebody to be big to have -- -- in their heart which is it going to be -- after the smallest and campaign.
No apparent about it yesterday that was yesterday that over now you know what's never over.
Internet -- affinity for Molly Henneberg.
Because she is lovely and Smart and knowledgeable and ready to go.
She also claims West Virginia ancestry which -- very very favorite.
Component of the power play family.
And the of that boot camp it boot camp and Democrat -- And the question is this Molly Henneberg what does congress look like now.
Well Chris style always had a little bit of development this morning let's look at the senate that's where it's a little bit more interesting.
We had one -- -- too close to call races decided this morning that was in Montana.
You have Democrat Jon Tester he's holding on to his -- he defeated Republican congressman Denny Rayburn.
So now it appears -- there's still more one more race in the senate outstanding that's in North Dakota.
That was an open seat when a democratic senator was retiring.
So Democrats are trying to hold on to that Republicans are trying to do to catch when they are still too close to call in North Dakota so at this moment in time.
It's the senate is 54 -- democratic votes that's.
52 Democrats two independents one of those is a pick up -- -- Olympia Snowe her -- Republican moderate Republican in Maine she's retiring that was a pick up for Democrats since the two independents are who likely will caucus with the Democrats so 54 Democrats.
45 Republicans.
And there's that is still that one seat outstanding.
In North Dakota and Chris as you note nobody it will hit the sixty.
A vote threshold for a filibuster proof majority.
H dog we thank you so much you are so good to help with us and understand these things we hope you are keeping everybody in line down in DC what we're -- Can't wait to get bag and Java there have -- -- she lies all right Molly was effusive thanks OK we're gonna take a quick break but Brad and penny who are sleep deprived.
Who are going beyond all limits pundits.
Power.
Will stay with us because when we come back we're gonna talk about what the president's agenda really looks like.
And how -- -- and if he'll summon that patriotic grace.
Or what the heck is gonna happen.
And we'll talk about that when we come back.
So stick around.
I believe.
And that was President Obama striking a different -- In his victory speech than he had in his campaign talking about not being cynical in uniting people and all of those things.
And this is power play.
Can he make that -- Can he turn it around.
And go from.
A candidacy that was in large part focused on disqualifying Mitt Romney.
The Republican nominee as an acceptable alternative that was very negative I can he do that and then transition into something bigger because remember.
The theory of the case is this that president had a hundred days when he took office in which he had an opportunity to try to find the center.
Territory there and he passed on that and ended up with he got his health care law which by the way is now going to be implemented.
The he got his health care law but left with -- dysfunctional Washington and -- very Republican House so old.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- probably knows she may even tell us.
And Brad Blake man probably has a hunch he's down in Washington so the question.
-- questioned the question and we'll start with Brad in Washington.
Is this.
When we look at the president.
You know we always borrow -- -- term here of patriotic grace this is something Americans really love.
Win it whether it was Bill Clinton doing it with the Republicans.
Or whether it was Ronald Reagan doing it with the Democrats.
Finding a way to reach out and find common ground and do something people will love that.
The president has an opportunity here Brad doesn't -- that if he takes advantage of this moment in this a slam.
But clear victory.
To use this to be magnanimous he could really turn around.
The his movement is legacy is -- have mark in history could -- There's there's no doubt about it look at the present rules that every the reality instead of ideology.
That's the first step.
To recovery and I think one of the things he could do a great magnanimous act of the president would be to take the leadership to Camp David.
And give them enough notice that they can come with a wish list each comes with a wish list they determine what I can be accomplished.
Next year and then use the state of the union as a platform by which.
Your promising things that you know you can deliver.
And give some credit to congress that you're gonna work together on these items and if you come to consensus on other things that you can do together now does that mean everything's gonna get done.
No but if the president is able to come off the mountain.
Of Camp David.
And and come with a plan that he knows at least in principle can be worked on I think he's going to be on there on the right way.
I've not only to legacy but also solving some problems the American people -- -- Penny Trevor dean says this.
As high tech chat every -- high tech -- here Trevor dean says this.
-- no doubt about it.
Obama cannot blame anyone now this is all his and his alone this is head this is there's no.
We were digging out of the hole or the car was in the negate it or wherever the car was its -- don't worry about that.
This is this is this is -- Yes it is now it is now his legacy and that is what he's going to be building on for the next four years is what does he want to leave this country how does he want to leave this country.
Obviously not from how we inherited but how does he want to leave and that's going to be the focus on and I really truly hope.
Mean American people use all them the outpouring of support that he had wind.
He and Chris Christie were to get on just on the -- kick and they -- able to show that government can work together.
You can bridge divides they are asking for that same thing with the big issues that we have there in congress.
So I really hope that I mean I think Brad has an excellent idea you know we've got to bring them out to Camp -- have more -- to have more you know.
Pull dilemma what took to Capitol Hill and actually be able to sit down and work with them -- that has been that collegiality has been missing.
And he's a former senator Biden's opponent like a minute yeah.
A former senator -- -- unrest.
But I mean -- -- -- so -- and Lewis he's another former colleagues in the they have that natural ability to be able to.
You know work with them -- to be able to you know bring them into the fold and I just.
You know it's gonna be really interesting to see you know one of the things I think were -- and watching -- -- but what about this triangulation.
-- aware of the different triangulation panic but going to happen because no one has.
A real clear center of power.
And so you know what is -- -- -- be these interesting -- of six yeah you know the you know gangs of fourteen at least seen in the past songs on judicial watch.
-- you're bringing me down and fired at they have to bring me down gangs of fourteen and oh yeah and it's cool -- gonna be really but those are going to be key because they're bipartisan.
And the American people want something done so bad -- one of the points that the red team made during the election was that's.
That the president on encumbered.
By the need to face voters again I would as he said to to the pocket gluten.
-- he said today as he said to Dmitry Medvedev.
He said I would have more flexibility after the election and that was in relation to missile defense.
But.
The Republican warning was that Obama unchecked.
By the need to face voters again would be more liberal do you think that's.
For.
No I don't here's why it's not that he has to fear of the electorate he -- appeared divided government.
And we have coequal branches of government that the president thinks he's superior something as somehow as a mandate.
From last night's victory he sorely mistaken -- and he's he's gonna find out that they hand that's been extended is going to be rejected.
So the present -- and again if you roll out of reality instead of ideology.
You're gonna do just fine.
Because -- -- it when a deal is only as good as it is for both parties if one person thinks he's got the upper hand.
The deal is honored and -- breach and and the problems are too great not first to get together let's get together.
Okay -- what's -- and and did you see everything when word of caution I was on the house side because -- Vanity -- very point with their -- their new numbers but to have.
Continuing ongoing investigations by the paralyzing me a proper oversight is absolutely needed -- and -- and we all want that to -- but to have.
You know I.
You -- investigations are out there just for the sake of fish hunting and and dean or yes it investigation I think will really dampen an American people be turned off by that so.
That I do caution about.
Emily thread like -- -- people are awesome.
And you are also been remarkably alert because I know you're both of the area -- late so I hope -- -- gonna get a -- we thank you.
Your time today foray freight we -- but.
And I'm back to power in addition of -- by my beer yet there it.
Or Cosmo or whatever you probably actually drink we thank you both here's what -- scribbling says.
He says he wants answers and by the way.
Behind to -- -- you believe I haven't mentioned this sooner.
-- -- -- -- That's where you follow me Internet dates -- follow me on the Twitter I didn't write a power play today.
That is they knew it didn't happen I'm sorry I was very tired I got sleepy and I divisions bad so.
But tomorrow are play will be there for you you can follow me at -- star what you can experience that awesome that's.
Each day for you -- but here's what -- struggling says.
He -- -- he -- says that Libya.
Is going to be swept under the rug.
Or is it going to come back and this is the Ben Ghazi thank.
No that's not gonna get swept under the rug but I had that one that -- coming through because everybody knows that -- went very very wrong there and Kimberly she.
-- -- Judy.
Says this I did the pocket hanky not last the terrifying encounter with Karl Rove last night.
Kimberly we call it a pocket square that's the first thing we do not like the term hanky and it just didn't survive the trip to New York.
I was not used to mop up a furrowed brow.
I promise all know pocket -- chips were harmed in the production of this Internet television show we're gonna take a quick break when we come back.
Some people you like Mary Katharine Ham will be with us and -- Tony Welch and we will talk.
More about this and about the strategy we will break on the actual strategy of how Barack Obama won how he did it.
And how he did everything he said he was gonna do -- a little bit more -- some electrical Florida.
So stick around.
Kandahar.
You can just -- my balance.
And that in about four seconds was a encapsulation.
Of the biggest best and most effective part.
A Barack Obama's reelection campaign that was an ad.
In which the Obama campaign interviewed people who worked at a steel company unionize steel company.
You'll Kansas City bolt -- in Kansas City that have been taken over by Bain Capital.
The company that Mitt Romney got off the ground and was the CEO of and there was it.
Dispute patient's response from fact checkers about the ad.
But at that -- and many more like -- rain in very heavy rotation for months and months and months.
While Mitt Romney was trying to get his counter offensive together.
This -- power play welcome back.
And whatever what happens going forward and whether -- patriotic grace is summoned.
Or whether anything else happens let's talk about how we got to today.
And we can do that because we have Smart fair minded patriotic people with us in Washington.
For a change Washington as Smart fair minded and patriotic people too -- And you know Mary Katharine Ham and in fact Internet and I can tell by her Twitter stream that -- would rather like her.
And she is.
A woman of the right she is the editor.
At large of hot air dot com she's a contributor to Fox News Channel she -- -- sparring.
Across the many platforms of fox with with doubt -- Democrats.
And one of the deadliest of the ball.
Tony Welch is a former Press Secretary for the Democratic National Committee you follow him -- dubs.
After you follow me it's he's our -- and her at MK hammer.
So welcome Tony and Mary.
-- question.
Here's a deal we'll start with you and -- The Mitt Romney.
Didn't answer -- Obama's attacks on him for a long time and as we saw the vote come in and Ohio.
It was clear that the president did what he set out to do which was -- a base for -- -- election that was a lot about a referendum on Mitt Romney yes.
Yeah I mean I think by the -- them make overs were kind enough to paint the smile on me today this is a good yeah if I can bring it here.
Defensively reinforced by them but no I I do think if that would be my main recriminations such that I have about the Romney campaign is that several months of 120 million dollars of advertising.
Just going after him needed to be answered -- needed to be answered.
Quicker there was one attempt early on where they went and you know talk to folks at another plant that had been.
Turned around.
By -- and actually had become a success what I thought was kind of an interesting move but it didn't.
Get much beyond that and it didn't get on TV -- I think it was a real real problem -- these Rust Belt states.
Where in incentives in Ohio in looked independence by incredible numbers.
But they're just.
Weren't enough of them agreeing with -- to make it happen.
And Tony.
As were saying earlier.
The Obama campaign did exactly what they said they were gonna do.
They delivered exactly.
That outcome and a little better with Florida.
Heathrow Florida and there and he did better than he said he was gonna do and or that many insiders were hinting he was going to do keeping -- keeping Florida but what he definitely did as Mary Kathryn points out.
Is held serve in the upper midwest.
Held other states that for a minute look like they were trending Romney.
That Pennsylvania and Michigan even Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa.
And certainly Ohio president held there and block from -- I think you're right.
And it.
What I what I thought noticed also remember.
Colorado that's -- -- -- and Colorado.
And the -- was it was a little less was was not isn't in play as much.
But there's something about that she's you're right about the summer ads and that they were effective.
But Chris you pointed out there -- an opportunity here this close to four bit.
After the first debate and Ronnie goes up nationally and folks are waiting for the states to close as well but.
Bit wooden but in Ohio specifically.
There -- the ads about that Romney had about -- that he was really vilified for because they weren't factual.
And so that and have been so newspapers they're really took -- on any there was there was kind of -- that you see Obama take take off from there so but one other thing it wasn't just yet.
The Obama campaign that spent a lot of time.
Invested in their ground game and you saw that I think this is -- races this close and all the states.
You saw the effect of that they knew they were going after and they turn those votes out on Election Day it was a big deal.
-- it was and never -- Mary -- on this question for Romney and his strategy.
And we talked to -- earlier about it.
And -- the beginnings of the Republican crabby -- Are are starting to rise up I think -- gets a lot of credit I think people think he did -- creditable job.
But the strategy.
Of not.
Fiercely.
Engaging the president -- or not trying to press advantages more is that something that's gonna linger.
Other things I think -- will -- for awhile that's going to be part of the discussion but I do think that a major part of the discussion is the makeup of the electorate.
The fact that -- Obama used this big data platform that he had to really just grind out these early these really important states that were very close.
I mean -- -- really being on the ground in Virginia where I live and bring on the ground in Ohio you did not feel the same thing -- 2008 at all.
But that didn't matter because he targeted those folks he made appeals to them he there was almost none of that sort of broad appeal that you have from 2008.
But it worked and I think a lot of examination of that.
And -- demographic train coming down the tracks which the GOP has known is coming yeah I'm I'm thankful that they have some -- -- is Ana Martinez and Marco Rubio out there who can make cases.
And become stars of the party if they aren't already.
But but that that need some soul searching which is the favorite word of the day.
Yes it's always isn't it fun to soul search next thing out here Democrat you're not soul searching today.
You are doing -- -- small happy dance it's not a giant happy dance but it's a small happy dance.
At Tony.
And how much of a model for what Obama did.
Was what George W.
Bush did in 2004.
And is this the new standard for re elections.
Hope and I -- I love that question I see some similarities.
You know you're the one move one of the criticisms of Obama actually that his lead in 2012 wasn't as great as it wasn't 2008 right of course that's not what he's running against he's not running against 2008 Obama is running against -- -- -- they're trying to figure out the best.
I will note that 04 came down to Ohio and -- only.
And Ohio was important yesterday.
But it wasn't the only prize there it didn't decide the election it was important but it wasn't just Ohio I think you'd agree with that -- Florida and Virginia Mitt Romney was never gonna get home without Florida and Virginia for sure with.
-- but then ended Romney -- there's one thing to be had there yet it was a it was a -- campaign on both sides I think they are to be commended.
But the -- is this and he's getting this on the right as well.
He had a wonderful attack line and just frame against Obama it changed a little bit and he got often that a little bit of both off of the economy.
But find the voters who can articulate what he wanted to do it.
His specific plans to say to say -- Bad is this find even though the economy was coming back at the end -- confidence was growing but he fell down on what specifically he was going to do about it I think ultimately.
That that's something that could have moved voters but that's a big gap he wasn't.
He wasn't for what -- do it it was just too.
Broad to Rosie is that things are going to magically get better instead of specifically here's how they get better he didn't do -- good.
Up and they got going and -- that as.
Chuckling at the irony of hearing that from Obama folks.
It really I ended the standard was different for him like that people accepted the status quo and that was part of what was going on here.
But like I guess much like obamacare we had to reelect Obama to find out what's in the second second term.
-- -- Homes and Tony would you like to resent or would you like let that understand them -- -- -- -- necessary I'll respond with facts President Obama had a dobbs went before the effect.
Before the congress that that didn't go anywhere because congress would let -- go anywhere and on the economy was also able to point to the private sector job growth over more than thirty consecutive months.
Totally five million jobs so the president had a very good responses to what he was going into -- want to go -- -- was very specific.
Now that Mitt Romney didn't have it on on that in fact he -- all talk modest five point plan but those were brought in platitudes they they never said.
I'm out there.
I will concede that Iran he was not great on that but I do.
Will not concede that Obama had a very specific plan I speak to play of Obama supporters who could not tell you what he's going to -- -- -- second there.
So I'd I would have to say about even -- -- but I think the voters tell him to a different standard and they said.
Look what's going on right now I guess that they okay for us and I mean that's that's when they're on it was up against and he did not.
Cross that -- And something -- he's swimming we saw Tony in the exit polls was this that the president's argument about the condition.
While people are not satisfied.
By and large with the condition of the country now -- -- percentage of people that they believe that this circumstance economically.
Was there the fault of George W.
Bush in previous Republican era.
The president's argument on that seem to have held.
Held well enough for it for another term.
I I think that's right but but.
Know where that resonated the president's well some of the biggest gaps.
Just and you look at -- demographic we were among the middle class.
And people who and he did well people who's who said.
That they thought he -- he represented who they were so you did well with middle class voters and he did well with moderate voters so so voters who describe themselves moderate.
The president resonated with those folks.
On the on the economy while.
I think it rang true I mean it you just couldn't say it's a hollow argument.
And the people made all the time that the unemployment rate is higher than when the president took office.
There are things that Americans know that Americans know happened between the day the president took office and Election Day.
They know what happened they know that its fight after that they also know that there were losing 700000 jobs then and when he and -- and right before the election we -- -- clip of -- gaining about a 17880000.
Dollars a month.
The -- I'm sorry jobs per month.
That when when folks know that when the president points -- that it's not he's not making a promise that's actually what's happening.
And and and it's it's kind of insulting to be on the Romney and they didn't say what passion but to keep pointing to what the what the unemployment rate -- -- on election -- on the day was elected and what it was now.
Just is insulting voters can -- tell the story make the case for yourself -- -- -- but.
Good is about -- insulting and it insulting to bring up the fact that he made a promise that it would be 6% that it would be under 8% that's not insulting.
Apparently using Barack Obama's words against him as some sort of out of bounds attack I don't think that -- -- -- and frankly frankly from my from my point of view.
It is unfortunately perhaps a testament to his failure over four years that people look at seven point 9% or 8% unemployment and say.
-- getting better I -- it'd be better -- that and he's.
That it would -- They don't look at that but you have to make progress coming out of a recession they look at that.
But in the end and will have to decide this on another show on which you can come in and show me where Barack Obama actually said that that's something that's those -- words opened his mouth that he never uttered.
It's it's -- -- -- but he published.
They did they they did publisher he didn't say the words but -- they did publish the chart.
Are a bit and then they revised the chart but it's -- to -- he -- you guys you guys want Tony you can you guys what you've got -- Ice ice -- and they'll have to fight you've still got I know I know I know but now he knows he's all charged up an election redstone -- we -- what we're off if it's if it's going to take time there's going to be healing in the mid level commanders on why you have to unwind all of this Tony I saw that live last night with -- Ewing Karl -- so I do understand yes the pocket handkerchief was not damaged but -- -- Perhaps we were gonna look a little anxious for a minute.
Tony we thank you very much congratulations.
Thank you marry Kevin guys -- -- before I let you go I want to ask you one question Mary Catherine yes it's a leader.
And the leading question is this.
Who's a Republican nominee going to be in 26 -- let's just do it let's just go ahead do it.
Was over tiger of 2016 is -- you're going there just.
Not a white guy probably.
I don't.
Well Tony yeah.
I'm actually being very serious I think some of the best talent on the bench is not -- -- and they think you have a demographic issue where it's important to speak to.
People and say look I do understand where you're coming from I do welcome you and and one of the ways that you do that is to identify with folks and as I do think there's a good -- And we will see what happens.
Mary -- throughout the thank you very much and you guys enjoy the rest of your post election hangover.
-- -- -- and this white guy.
-- takes no offense at that I want you to know that that as as a white dude it's cool it's I understand.
But when we come back we will talk about who it's going to be where it's gonna come from but not just in terms of trying to prognosticate.
Bid next election.
But to talk about this what's the future of the Republican Party which way do they go.
Defeat general -- do more historically speaking to change directions of parties then do victories.
So what direction does this defeats and the GOP.
We'll have somebody who knows something about that Alice Stewart one of your favorites will be with us to talk with the future of her party so stick around.
Was what it was like.
The Fox News Channel you know that place the Washington examiner hosted a debate.
Among the Republican contenders.
In wave wave -- -- way way way long ago back in the summer of 2011.
And Ames Iowa.
And what history says what the trend says is that one of those people.
Would be the most likely next nominee.
But this may not be a time where history does that.
And this is power play as we -- and roll through.
-- -- one hour from here on fourteen ship -- the fourteenth floor of the Fox News mother ship.
Foxnews.com mother ship.
And the thing is this of the people who pursued worse oftentimes led Mitt Romney.
Is one of them one of those folks are going to be the future -- lode star of the GOP or is it somebody else.
How does that ago.
Alice Stewart might know you know when she right now because she work for two of the folks who were on that stage -- Michelle Bachmann and Rick Santorum.
As they cycled through the cycle.
Alice welcome back happy post Election Day.
Same views that has been a long night for free everyone but you've done a fantastic job by an watching you crunched those numbers last night have if you.
-- we.
We we we were right and that's.
It can't happen again that's the what if the decision that's would all we care about his right we leave it up to you guys to figure out what it means until we can lift our heads up.
And oh how I wish you were wrong I think this the topic is whether this we got some -- -- emails gets an interest emails.
Sitting there OK so Al less.
-- the Republican Party it finds itself at a crossroads.
-- there was a strong Tea Party momentum coming out of 2010 the 2010 mid term.
Propelled forward.
This strong fiscal conservatism strong small government movement going forward that -- -- the campaigns of not only could congresswoman Bachmann.
Former senator Santorum but others like Rick Perry like Herman Cain.
And that bit through the cycle had their -- and their busts.
But is it going to be one of those people that emerges as the leader for the re form of the party.
It very likely well could be I mean all those are great folks and you know as we've learned with the Republican Party a lot of times it you have to wait your turn -- they have all been vetted.
They've been knocked around a little bit and they'd all be great candidates the good news if there is any out of this is that the Republican.
Party has a good field team we've got a good deep bench all those people you mentioned.
And and not the least of which my other former boss who had consider tossing his hat in the ring governor Mike Huckabee he would be fantastic.
In 2016.
But but each of those people Michelle would be great Rick Santorum.
Associate got out -- form the -- and has a tremendous following with patriot voices so.
He's got a great following was there.
-- party faithful but also social conservatives which is key to shoring up both of those sub branches of the Republican Party.
Both also got a -- -- certainly can't forget Paul Ryan he's right one of the top folks up there.
They've got Marco Rubio and then that one of the relative.
I guess you column as of last night newcomer.
Texas under Ted Cruz fans he's done a fantastic job in his race and you know he's gonna go -- -- and get some they might be work a little in Washington and I think he's -- top contender but but it if if there is anything to come out of this is we have a good team in waiting and I think another thing that that we can learn and build on as as the Obama campaign did as.
When they moved in and 2008 and set up the ground game they kept a lot of those folks Eileen kept them working -- kept them in the in the field.
We need to do same thing we need to we need to grow on that the people that we have and also the ground game that we haven't and keep.
Keep things going in Iowa New Hampshire South Carolina and -- on that.
That left.
Field organization and keep that going in adding to the list so -- 2016 comes.
We're not starting from scratch for not starting from ground zero and -- we have a we have a good base in terms of not just personnel -- names on the ticket but -- feet on the ground.
And we certainly saw that there was that organizational -- for the Romney campaign.
Well funded as it was.
That that hit it from primary season to general election.
Was it was a tough left.
-- what Mary Katharine -- said before you joined us.
Was that -- white dudes may not be the way to go for the Republican Party.
That is some diversity.
Whether a female candidate or whether or certainly Hispanic candidate.
And she talked about -- -- rubio you mentioned Marco Rubio.
Is there a demographic challenge that Republicans need to face not just in who their nominee is but what their policies -- -- the outrageous.
Well I think there that all that will be addressed but we certainly need to let that the dust subtle and we need to get a little sleep but.
But certainly that the policies relating to it to those specific.
Voting groups need to be looked at whether we're talking about it immigration whenever talking about.
You know minority.
Issues.
All that needs to be addressed but the white dudes -- open up their eyes a little bit more and take a look at as as you said look we we lagged.
Far behind and the Latino the Hispanic vote in minority vote we certainly.
Did not do well with that with the woman women vote so and the young vote so we need to look at what we can do to.
And I don't see it so much is a policy shift but we just need to do more to -- track them and get them engaged and get them involved in the process at this point.
Unfortunately a lot of our our our voting constituency it's it's getting old and and and -- And dying off sadly so we need to we need to rejuvenate the party starting with with.
The even high schoolers but but.
To get them involved but really focus on the the college Republican groups and get them involved and engaged because.
We we have to start growing this from a from the bottom up because we learned.
Very.
A hard lesson that the Democrats and in doing that network to their favor.
Now Brian Fannie says this it's time for the GOP to shed social conservatism.
For economic slash constitutional conservatism otherwise get used to losing the White House.
And it's something that the Internet has been saying a lot today.
Especially because of what happened in the senate races and Indiana and Missouri where Republicans took leads.
And because of a gaffe.
In each case that well one was a -- the other one was just something.
Very unusual.
That because of those they lost what were considered be favorable senate races and people are saying that that social issues or are keeping independents away from Republicans do you buy that.
No we can't be that if if we try it's ludicrous to think you can you separate the Republican Party amongst the social.
Conservatives and the more fiscal conservatives and of foreign policy conservatives.
Work -- -- party there's it's 33 legged stool as Michelle Bachmann asset and as Reagan said.
And we need to get them all together because if you look at it the economic issues.
They are a moral issue that is all -- all comes under the the social.
Umbrella because the debt that we have and passing on.
-- our future generations that's a moral issue it's immoral to spend money today that we don't have that our children and grandchildren are are paying for so.
A lot of these issues that people think are just simply.
Economic or national security they all -- -- -- the social.
Social conservative umbrella and if we even attempted to try and divide them -- -- them.
We're going to divide the Republican -- emerges -- -- hand it to the Democrats so we cannot do that we need to find.
Wait.
We need to find a candidate we need to unify and get them on the same page because these issues are that's what separates us from the Democrats and those.
Liberal policies and the big government policies is the fact that we.
We are pro life we are -- of faith and strong family but -- for free market principles of this country was founded on.
And we need to get find what we need to do and who needs to help us get -- on the same page.
Alice Stewart.
She has been -- part of the Republican presidential process for the last two cycles in a big way.
And here's one that whoever's running -- -- -- sixteen.
Shall be in the mix Alice we thank you very much.
Thanks Chris great to talk to you okay Internet.
You know what it's -- post Election Day but we have goodies for you we still they're still goodies for you to unwrap and enjoy.
Charles will be with us.
-- and tape form or digital form I suppose.
Making fun of me.
A little bit on the special last night and that's okay that's cool.
We we we do we will do that but before you get that.
And I'm not sure what's on after this I don't know what's going to be there the next show that -- start here in in a few minutes.
But I'm sure it will be good whatever it is but before you get any of that.
About some power points about -- post election power points and here today is our points same as it ever was and for Talking Heads fans out there you know what I mean.
And here's the first PowerPoint.
People hate.
Washington my gosh they are so sick of Washington they say they hate gridlock and they hate congress they don't think the president is doing a particularly good job.
And they're unhappy with all of it.
-- the second -- point they voted for a more intense version of the same thing.
They made the deed Republicans Republican here and the Democrats Democrat here and here we go again and it starts all over again.
-- this is as seemingly bizarre behavior for electorate that professes such dissatisfaction.
With the gridlock in the status quo in Washington.
And then these things are all true and here's your third PowerPoint.
Nothing is over.
This is a great misconception in politics that people have because they're so emotionally tied to it because.
We want to see things in larger versions of themselves because it -- -- personally.
But the belief that -- some victories are totaled some defeats are absolute.
This is not so the ball keeps rolling.
Here's -- replace production and here's your PowerPoint prediction.
Is that whatever the constitution of these groups in the president's ideology and all of these other things.
The world's gonna look very different couple years from now when we get to mid terms I can tell you how but -- thing stays the same for ever so.
Don't forget about that.
