These were able to pick off another governor's office from Democrats in North Carolina Virginia is Bob McDonnell is.

Chairman of the Republican Governors Association he joins us live from Richmond tonight governor thanks for being here.

-- Brett get it it.

I mean this heard Karl's piece I know we heard today a lot of Republican soul searching about the future after this loss.

Your thoughts today.

We're very disappointed.

That we didn't win Mitt Romney Paul Ryan were.

I think terrific leaders had very good decent people.

And you know we had -- if we win and that election the polls even that our ground game what -- to Victor but he got to -- -- the president did a great job.

-- getting out as voters in his closing argument -- the undecideds many of go his way.

So we we -- that but dugout I'm very pleased -- the bright light last night we won eight out of eleven congressional seats in Virginia.

And we picked up another Republican -- so we've got thirty Republican governors 60% now.

Around the country and the largest number of any any other party and -- and twelve years so that's a good side.

But there -- some introspection tonight if you look at.

The coalition that the president put together for example the Latino vote.

You look at the exit polls it actually went up.

From 2008.

To 2012.

And obviously voted extensively for President Obama the youth vote.

Surprisingly went up from 2008 to 2012 and 18% to 19%.

And the female vote the gender gap was significant for the president.

Staying the same but did the gender gap significant so -- do Republicans have to do a lot more.

On those.

Fronts.

Yes but update message was good on jobs in the economy deficit reduction energy independence.

Protecting the military I think we have a right issue -- But winning is more than that I think it's a combination of the right tone.

To make sure you bring as many people on to your team as possible that's about the organization on the ground we obviously got a dual led a -- that.

But but the outreach to these newer voters the younger voters the minority voters Brett.

We got we got -- well clobbered across the board there and we've got to do better because I believe our conserve ideas are better for.

All those groups all those people we've got to just be more effective.

And I do think our message is better when young people look at -- and it's crushing national debt not getting a job bigger debt when they get out of college.

I think our -- that message resonates but we've got to be a lot more effective in getting it to overly.

Governor there's a lot of talk today about compromise both sides saying they want to reach across the -- that they want to get things done because that's the message they hurt.

But for Democrats like senator read.

Who talked today to reporters he said there was another message about taxes tickle it's.

There was a message sent to us for the American people based on the campaign.

-- -- -- People making all this money have to contributed little bit more.

So how do you think that battle is going to go governor.

Well I guess they're the class four -- warfare argument of senator -- continues and you know the United States senate hasn't passed the budget under his leadership -- and three and a half years and that's embarrassing I do think though the broader point.

Is the elections are over.

We are disappointed very much with the results.

And without capitulate -- any of our principles as conservatives Brett.

We've got to get this get this nation on track -- not go over the cleft Washington's broken and we're spending too much entitlements they to be reform.

The military is still needs to be protected but we've got to find a way to keep -- -- -- they have a United States' credit rating downgraded and calls an international crisis because we can't make an agreement would be devastating to governors on the states as we have to manage our budget so I got confidence in John Boehner and Eric Cantor Mitch McConnell.

Worker with the president they've got to find a way to got to do it -- But you know governor it's the basically the same team that was up here for the super committee that had the same.

Job to do to find a solution to this problem in fact they.

Had to find it or else this sequestered was put in place that -- a state like yours you just mentioned.

With the military and it didn't get done so it's the same group of folks.

With the same job what makes you certain that it's going to get done this stuff.

Deadlines.

You know before they had.

-- a deadline that was averted was -- frustration and August.

At a super committee was -- to fix it but it really didn't have their back.

To the wall now -- little wall because all of these are -- issues brother car.

Water or about January far so it's actually the lame duck session with this president in the same folks are gonna have to.

Find a way to get it done on -- it's embarrassing that the greatest country on earth continues to get driven.

To the and to that that the break.

-- but default.

-- international crisis and it's just time for people that.

Find a way to stand up with the president.

It's got -- lead he's got to know that entitlement reform and spending constraint is the first.
