That was a clip from a great movie called starlet joining us from our Los Angeles bureau we have the filmmaker of -- Sean baker.
And it looks like we may have starlet is starlets the -- real name.

Sean -- -- Welcome very welcome here to the show so -- we wanted to get right to the nuts and bolts of what this film is.
And I want you did say it kind of cued up and tells a little bit about what starlets all about.
Sure well the the Hollywood pitch is that it's Harold and Maude.
Meets boogie nights meets Beverly Hills Shalala at half and -- down.
This -- that you all know but it's you know it's three Hemingway's lead -- debut.
You may know her as Mariel Hemingway's daughter -- great granddaughter.
You know she's a super -- and but this is here this is the first time that she's actually -- she's been.
An aspiring actor for awhile but she's been very selective about what she wanted to do first and I am very lucky to have her two you know.
Accusing Starr that as her legal.
That's so that is so exciting and watching that clip and reading a little bit more about.
Would tell us about the plot because they these two are not obviously it's a look at them in that -- they're not exactly they have been hanging out every day.
Having a cup of coffee they meet in an unusual circumstance something happens.
And then there about a friendship or relationship evolves from their tell us about that.
It's an unlikely friendship between two women in the San Fernando Valley.
California.
A twenty year old and an 85 year old -- -- in really stems from the younger one finding a lot of cash.
And they thermos that she buys at the older ones yard sale.
And -- she faces a moral dilemma whether or not to return the money and she needs the money but she doesn't know whether she should.
-- or not and so she befriends this older woman to see if she.
Deserves the money back -- needs the money back and this in the relationship grows from there.
And he realized you know there are revelations along the way because both women have.
Secrets shock and that there.
Holding yes you know and I was I was reading that I love this plot by the way and I it reminded me of -- sounds like a perfect scenario.
Four and a television show not on our network that I do love to watch it what would you do you know when.
I don't know if you've ever seen that on ABC it's a it's a television show where they set up these scenarios.
Where they put like you know a woman finding money in a thermos in the and they -- follow around a -- -- him -- -- they liked what would you do would you return the money is -- an easy choice.
As a slam dunk or would you do maybe what this character does in the movie I guess you can't give it away and tells what -- ends -- doing with them money candy.
Right no action.
You know ultimately -- it becomes insignificant in the movie it's it's it's really the catalyst -- bringing both than that of both of them together but it's.
It's really about how the relationship itself and how it growth and then also about.
James background -- what she does as I said there's a little boogie nights element in there so we explore the adult film world and the San Fernando Valley.
And so but yes they do you know about that show and that's another one with -- comedian rich boss yeah and I believe.
And so yes yes.
But again and it's just it was it's it's meant as a plot point like a launching point -- to actually get to know these characters.
And I loving you told us about Andrea I want I wanted to ask you about the role for the elderly character because it sounds like you found her very interesting -- -- is this her debut as well.
It is the Fed could Johnson and LA native she is 87 now 86 when we shot.
It was also her lead -- debut she was she was actually discovered by my executive producer at the YMCA working out.
We adjust lost somebody for that role we are very distraught we -- know what we're gonna do.
Suddenly I get a text message.
From my executive producer and she says I think we found our CD.
She sent me a photo of this woman at the YMCA and I said -- -- approach -- gently don't scare she did this idea came in for an audition.
She blew us away and it was just a great in -- wonderful experience working with both of them and and and they play off each other quite wonderful.
The end.
It looks I mean oh that is such -- and true Hollywood story and be working out the YMCA and how how much do you love that an 86 year old at the YMCA you know we'll.
An -- well we can't we knew.
That's exactly that we are -- this is an independent film you know we don't have the luxuries of having trailers and all that stuff so we knew.
We knew that she'd be able to physically put up with what -- put him right you know the the hot.
LA San Fernando -- and and pick setter sell so she was probably down for the grill film making tactics that we are going to base their wits.
And and speaking of those film making tactics in the way you shot this I understand that.
In the making of this film that you want to do do he started to do some of the shooting and then you hand it off the camera.
And it's a particular other pile of -- right.
Well you know medium -- wonderful director for -- -- -- he.
This is the first time that I actually headed off the camera to somebody else my past films I've made a film called prince of Broadway that Lee Daniels presented.
The director precious.
And another phone -- take out they're both available on Netflix but we.
What basically.
-- I used to shoot my films and it was very stressful because I'm trying to direct the acting in the shoot the same time -- on this wonderful DP by the name of -- Chung and he has it extremely bright future ahead of him.
And he just need this he captured the look of of of the valley I think in in a very unique way and using the light.
That I I saw during location scouting I felt I was -- blinded by the light of the San Fernando Valley and and and he really captured that and and quite beautifully.
That is so awesome and I also understand that you when you you know you have the script and you would shoot it if you.
The actors would shoot it if they liked it but then you gave everybody the freedom to re right on the spot.
Is that true.
Well you know I.
I come from -- the background a comedy writing background in directing background I was one of the creators of that so called Greg the Bunny a -- which.
It was on fox back in the day with Sarah Silverman and Seth Green.
And obviously there was a lot of improvisation -- comedy going on in there and I and I've taken that and I've employed I put that technique into the independent.
Social realist films that I like to make.
You allowing my actors I tell my actors.
We've written this for you.
But if you.
Think you can you better take our dialogue and sort out the window and see what you can come up with that if something if they come -- with something better then.
You know just it is just.
Should cameras are rolling up up up up up.
Yes that's great all right well congratulations to you on completing this film starlet where can people see it and find it.
-- you know music box films company that you may know they released the girl with the dragon -- series.
And they are rolling this film out in a very nice way many -- -- tomorrow which is November ninth they are releasing the film.
In new York and Los Angeles.
