This and out of -- -- nearly two weeks now out from super storms sandy ravaging the north east and tens of thousands of people.
Remain without lights and without heat some parts of New Jersey in the Jersey Shore folks -- were forced to leave their homes.
Are told that they can come in this pictures they're gonna be able to come back and look around gather few things it is just such a rough picture.
Even two weeks later that's -- we get started on this second hour of America's Newsroom.
Good to have you with us on this Friday everybody -- -- -- -- -- Bill Hemmer good morning and if you've got your power on your lucky because so many do not it's been a long haul for these folks -- in Wednesday's nor'easter.
Adding insult to injury there was a blizzard here for people who remain holed up inside their homes a lack of power.
Starting to take its told you can imagine.
We -- have well this -- work on.
An electric system.
You know we have to get Warner to go to the bathroom from from somewhere else and and -- -- toilets and that's the problem.
And I haven't and Electric's.
I can't even call.
I guess he didn't let me -- -- -- -- -- -- Lights and power back on after this second storm now.
Success is being made but there's still a great deal of frustration and a great deal to be accomplished.
There are still just in New Jersey Martha over 250000.
People right now who do not have electricity.
And let -- roll some video we recorded just a short time ago.
We are at the monument park race track here in new -- being used as -- staging ground.
-- utility trucks to assemble and for them to be deployed we saw literally hundreds and hundreds of trucks possibly over a thousand of these trucks from all over the United States.
Here trying today to get the power running this just in New Jersey.
The situation also very difficult to New York in Westchester at least 43000.
Without power there more than a 100000 without power on.
Long Island Andrew Cuomo -- the governors said that the State's utilities estimate his words is archaic and obsolete.
And in particular he lashed out at the -- Long Island power authority known as life back.
The question does the fact that the state gave them a franchise.
And in his words like then failed one of the things that he -- criticized -- about -- Was the fact that they seem to have experienced a shortage in utility poles just underscoring the problems that utility's base.
-- try to restore the electricity many people bottom line they're going to be in the dark very.
At least at least the next few days and is again day elevenths and -- struck.
Yeah definitely we're hearing in New Jersey that they've run out of supplies of some of these trucks and now they have to wait for this applies to come men.
So that they can do the work that's in front of them.
What about people who don't you know we just can't go home at all now because they have storm damage in terms of housing and shelter.
There's -- figure right now put up by the federal government.
People are now looking to FEMA for housing help because they cannot go home.
And now we're being told that all the team is trying to provide hotel rooms -- mobile homes.
The housing shortage is so critical right now that some of the people who are being giving temporary housing.
Now are being relocated.
As far as 200.
Miles away from home.
And Martha I'll -- very quickly again a reminder just how critical the housing situation is I talk to some transportation workers who came to New York from buffalo to help out.
They can't get hotel rooms -- are here to help restore power they have to travel almost two hours each way to upstate New York.
Just to let -- get on the job so housing also a critical problem back to you.
And to so many volunteers who are taken in to help the volunteer power seems to be stronger than anything that's coming.
From the government -- according to some folks out there right now David Lee thank you so much.
You know the the scenario for David -- so many of our correspondents if we -- for -- -- differently -- don't hang with this one moment here.
-- that they were out there when sandy here than there were out there when the -- nor'easter rolled through.
And then you know they they have picked up on and on the pain that so many folks have gone through.
And I think David -- what you find it is that the more you talk to people the more questions they have because ultimately they don't know when they're gonna get out of this mess.
And and what we hear from so many of them is no -- providing any answers that must be an enormously frustrating place to be -- line.
I think you -- it fared better than I could.
People can cope with the fact that the lights have gone out there is no heat.
This is a problem this is an obstacle they have to overcome but what many people cannot accept.
Is the fact that there's no end in sight when they call -- the utility company the power company the government.
They get no one on the other end of that phone wouldn't give them an answer and that is what they find intolerable.
Because the current the current situation is difficult but they want to have at least some inkling.
When is it going to end and that's something for the most part knowing.
It seemed to tell I think the other thing it's important for our viewers understand you're in New Jersey today but you've been in New York on Long Island in the southern end of Long Island.
It is dark -- night you you fly over there in a plane at night you can tell where the ocean stops in the land begins.
A what was your experience out there -- me.
I don't as an overly dramatic but being there in the evening in some ways it reminded me of -- of a war zone it was completely desolate.
There were occasional generators providing a very.
In in areas where there is an occasional police officer or law enforcement entity but.
-- where that comes to mind is it it's actually very scary.
You get a sense that.
It could be lawless people have put up signs warning looters not to -- their property and that.
The comforts of civilization that they've come to -- they expect are nowhere to be seen it's a very different world bill.
David Lee thank you will be in touch throughout the day there David Lee Miller thanks.
