Just learned moments ago that CIA director -- General David Petraeus has now resigned.

The general has sent a letter to the White House saying that he resign because he was having an extramarital.

Affair.

And that's the reason.

President Obama has now accepted that resignation apparently this happened over the past 24 hours going back and forth between the Central Intelligence Agency.

As well as the White House -- David Petraeus is no longer.

The director of the CIA.

I want to bring in the anchor of special report Bret Baier who Cleary clearly has covered this with the specials you had -- in the past two or three weeks on Ben Ghazi.

Going over the timeline -- by di tale.

First -- -- the resignation the very abrupt resignation of General Petraeus your thoughts on that.

First.

Well first -- just off the -- was someone who has talked with General Petraeus just.

Just in the few past few moments.

And the message was.

A couple of points one was.

Tell the truth it was my request the White House did not pressure me to do this.

This had nothing to do with Ben Ghazi nothing at all this was my request.

This had nothing to do with it I want to testify about Ben Ghazi.

There was nothing to do with the White House pressuring me to leave this job.

And it did have to do with the according to sources.

An extramarital affair.

And that is now confirmed.

What's.

We are seeing here is the development Catherine Herridge has talked about.

The facts about -- guys and be lawmakers who were concerned about what was said on Capitol Hill and what was testified to.

By General Petraeus.

That context of the last few moments however and what he's saying.

Is that's he's telling people that this was his decision.

And that the White House did not pressure him.

You know how Washington works there are many different reasons and many different.

Motives for things to happen.

This is what's happening real time at this moment.

It does happen just days before this testimony.

Up on Capitol Hill about this Libya attack.

And this investigation.

Moves forward.

Yeah it doesn't we were talking to Chris Wallace -- not sure you heard it earlier Brett but the Chris while also saying look we should take General Petraeus at his word.

And take this exactly for what it is at face value which I totally agree with because we have.

We have nothing else to interject in in the conversation.

I think our point that Katherine was making that Ed Henry to -- a -- -- that was making was that there was a little bit.

Of head butting between the CIA and the White House in recent weeks over a timeline of the Ben Ghazi attack.

Simply bringing it up.

I think is merited in this case -- -- just for the timing of this entire thing the fact that it's happening today.

This is what General Petraeus is saying I'm telling the truth it was my request the White House didn't.

Pressure me.

And we have to take him at his word listen it's also important in the context of General Petraeus.

And who this man is.

He is a stellar military career serving the United States.

And if you look back at that career.

And we should in context of what he's done for the country.

As as he get gets ready to leave his career perhaps not in the brightest lights.

Because of an extramarital affair.

And in the light of having to testify about the situation in Ben Ghazi.

You look back -- years and years of service and what he did in Iraq and what he did in Afghanistan.

And what he's done all throughout as a general and throughout his time in the military.

Clearly act clearly a great man and a great general Bret Baier Brett if you could stand by for a few minutes would appreciate it I -- it's okay.
