-- continuing on our sandy.
Hurricane aftermath world vision monitors how churches are handling this aftermath of sandy.
And we are joined by Phyllis Freeman is the domestic disaster director what vision so welcome when thinking so their image I had.
But I can impress the world vision had you would place really before sandy actually hit you came in from Dallas and got here of like the -- -- -- -- did any damage.
Why how does that work.
We've made a decision a few years ago -- really the best ways to care for child well being.
And families is to get ahead of what we know it's going to arrived so we as we -- monitoring.
Events in storms coming off the African -- we actually watching it to the point where we have pre positioning.
Supplies in relationships in and -- sandy we had -- surprise here before the storm actually hit the coastline.
But unfortunately our facility was.
-- it is well so -- -- -- where and where was your facility in the Bronx across the street from the East River.
So that was never it never anticipate well -- -- -- that it's harder does hit those kinds of things no matter what and how much planning you do absolutely but if you have certain.
And things in place like personal hygiene kits and flood cleanup kits blankets.
Family food -- those items are the essentials immediately after the storm so our intent was to have those -- we didn't.
We have relationships about 200 relationships with churches in the Bronx community we now are sending our assessment team.
-- Stanton island Coney Island Far Rockaway.
We are also in Hoboken, New Jersey and we've established relationships there.
Richardson churches and -- leave the church is the pillar in any community.
And so they care before the family before the storm for the families where at the church -- after.
And after we -- transition -- that relationship needs to be intact.
So we support the churches with a sense of supplies that are necessary.
We make a commitment to walk alongside of them for one year.
We have I'm building materials currently in our facility in the Bronx.
So if churches were damaged we have insulation and shingles and we'll be getting other supplies in that they if they contact us we can help them with that part.
Well and because I was out -- a couple of churches over the cynical -- -- likens the damage is way over their insurance costs and I think that a million dollar.
-- policy and it you know here's some of the things -- that.
Footage from a the New Jersey church.
And just incredible damage that you would never.
Have anticipated it's it's not -- -- fire which sort of cleans it says it destroys -- water just leaves a mess behind and so what can churches do can they.
Can they applied any kind of -- from world vision or is that sort of thing even available to them.
We actually make it quite easy for that to happen if they go on to our web site.
The end of the leave a message there that they are in need whenever that might be if our assessment teams have not made contact with them.
And then someone from Martins here will be in touch with him and will collapse and talk to them see what they need to there's there's no -- -- that we know people are struggling we know churches is struggling.
Families are struggling many of whom made a decision.
Not to pay for flood insurance because it was it.
Decision between -- insurance in many cases and food or the essentials for life.
-- It really is the economic expect it to the ideas of what's most important and they really did play sort of elected.
Mean in terms of their insurance costs you.
What other things that attend churches do you and before you get to through do you know how many churches were actually.
Either destroyed or left incapacitated because -- I heard.
-- we don't have that final number as of yet.
So but there -- a lot of them out that there are a lot of them out there -- as our assessment teams are going out daily.
There -- finding the churches -- stopping their meeting with the pastor's.
They're determining their needs that they have for that day they come back to our facilities and then we actually we'll -- -- track.
With what if we have those items available and will drive -- -- the next day.
They -- so we are beginning to work with associations for example in Hoboken -- -- working with an association of about.
Ten churches that's a perfect scenario for us because this is spread across the city.
In wherever those pockets of poverty -- people that are in need.
We've been known that there will be taken care of if we distribute to that one group then they will -- to payments in the.
Have you ever been in a situation like this weird so many churches who would normally be.
-- to the aid of other people are being out there on the lines and offering help but you've been in the situation -- so many churches or act or just.
In needs themselves.
Absolutely hurricane Katrina and there were churches that were completely destroyed we.
Up until years silicone would actually returning.
To a celebration.
Fellowship that they had because it would just reopening.
After Katrina recovery and -- -- is a very very long time process so feminists are going to be.
In this kind of strategy for a long time unfortunately.
You see though that sometimes it can make it congregational stronger that it can actually be a working.
Sermon.
-- process yeah they really can.
And just within itself within that one congregation.
And then -- other churches and faith organizations come alongside of them.
It's it's it's -- wonderful opportunity to express the love of god.
An extremely tangible way to act like family.
To support one another to come along side of the pastor.
In many cases the pastors -- your own home.
Has been damaged and members of his church have been damaged and the church.
That's I have below for the pastors to actually withstand and they do fabulous jobs we wouldn't just come alongside of them support -- -- -- -- Built for actually -- -- -- this photo thank you very much of -- Lehman domestic disaster director for world vision I want to remind people dissect the website at its -- world vision dot org.
