Four years ago then candidate Barack Obama made a bold promise to our nation's heroes vowing to get them the help they need and and a backlog of benefit plans.
It was the same promise he made this past veterans day.
If you find yourself struggling with the wounds of more.
Sisters posttraumatic stress disorder.
-- traumatic brain injury.
Will be there for you as well with the care and treatment that you need.
No veteran should have to wait months or years.
For the benefits that you've -- so we will continue to attack.
The claims back all we won't let up.
But despite his pledge to speed things not the number of veterans waiting for claims to be covered has doubled.
And processing errors have gone up Justin Taylor is an army veteran who served three tours in Iraq.
Completing his service in 2009.
And since then like thousands of others he's been waiting for help he joins us live from Charlotte hi Justin.
And I Dillon we're doing a -- served three tours -- -- in -- -- got out 2009 and then you're diagnosed with Crohn's Disease so you have many complications from that -- of course would like to see a doctor you.
You tried to get an appointment in 2009.
When you got out of the service how long did take you to get an appointment.
It took me two years to get a check up appointment two years what was being holed up.
They actually hold up buzz -- employment six months out they would call and cancel the week before and schedule another one a couple more months out and it kept them -- that over and over.
-- and I know you do rely on tri care as many many do.
But in this case when it comes -- the VA.
There's such a gigantic backlog and -- it's -- you've been part of the system now what's the matter with that.
Systems can -- broken they can't take care of the influx of veterans coming back they simply cannot handle it.
I think it -- -- your stories.
Incredible that -- -- two years just to get an appointment do you just have bad luck or is this happening to some of your other -- -- I'd like to say on the rare exception but a lot of my friends about the same difficulties a lot of them have to go to lawyers are bother congressman Sanders -- anything moving.
Just -- from from where you sit -- You say that the system simply is overwhelmed because so many people are common enemy need to help.
-- -- look like the VA is hiring more people or or this is the new normal.
This is a new normal.
Why do you say that.
This and and -- because he there's really no more money to hire more people don't seem like they're streamlined systems like they should be.
Everything's on paper still you know I mean every time I have to go until an appointment I have to take a stack of -- like this show to every doctor whenever I do get an appointment.
We'll and that's rare will be just and what's your message for the present United States and cities gonna do everything you -- to help you.
I was safe -- this -- have been fixed yesterday the -- fixed years ago back in Vietnam era it's not been fixed since then.
Him.
It sounds like there are so many opportunities to streamline this process and to get.
Heroes like -- to help they need justice John thanks so much for coming and telling us your personal story with us.
Thank you.
