-- new study out in which surveyors found some kids are becoming obsessed with getting ripped.

So much so that researchers found that one of every twenty middle and high school students turned to steroids to bulk up.

They're talking about kids as young as fourteen.

The report comes out of the pediatrics medical journal and it isn't just boys looking to build up.

The researchers say 13 of boys and 15 of girls have used those popular protein shakes which is a completely different thing obviously.

They found that between five and 10% used other muscle enhancing products like it's -- seen.

Chemicals doctors say it might cause can kidney damage and high doses but they're not sure.

Doctors point to peer pressure and more muscular guys on TV.

And for some reason they point to this guy is some sort of someone somebody might be following which is -- that they're old and have no idea what they're talking about.

It is not clear how widespread trend really is nationwide the study looked only at students in schools in Minneapolis.

Most of them from lower middle income families for what it's worth joining us now doctor Arthur Caplan.

Director of the medical ethics division at NYU's like a medical center he's also the co director of the news sports ethics and society program at New York University -- afternoon.

-- thanks for him so the kids are -- and not new information these numbers seem big they're big -- the kids are too young.

So it's never acceptable to -- but when you start to see a fourteen year old do it.

The side effects of the drugs are going to be worse -- earlier you use your kind of pre puberty you're -- longer.

This is bad news and I'm sure it's going on.

All of this happening in Minneapolis it's happening other place -- percent you know that it built the one to eight kids -- -- -- your fourteen.

You know they.

That's one of the problems with the all this marijuana talk.

I mean they used to tell kids at fourteen all use that in your -- all these bad of course none of that is true right and that but it is true with this well the sad fact his steroids work they just have nasty side -- you know -- -- work.

So what we've got to do I think he's given on the parents if you see -- -- bulk up from thirteen to fourteen get on the coaches -- on the trainers and say.

What's going on here I come back from summer vacation I put on thirty pounds of muscle at age fourteen.

So where are you you wonder it's if if steroids are available in every Jim everywhere if anybody can get them.

And if that's happening in our middle schools that there's a dealer in the middle school well we.

We have the problems we do have problems I don't think the messages come out from the pro sports scene yet to say.

Knock this off we're going to be tough on it you know it happens we'll make that somebody.

But they're not really discouraging -- in the NFL and other sports it trickles right back into the colleges that trickles back out of school and here we over the middle school problem -- to watch for Roy grades and other things if your parent correct at me that sort of thing sudden flare ups but really.

It doesn't take a genius to see if you built up all of a sudden -- dead overnight -- so he's going you know doctor Caplan thank you my pleasure.
