Yeah Obama -- the -- dot com lots of you with us on this Tuesday.
Before Thanksgiving happy early Thanksgiving Day to you and yours hopefully it'll be a great holiday and we're sort of used the occasion of Thanksgiving to talk about a couple of different stories here this is -- show if you join us before you know that here -- solution America.
We take a look at issues that.
Face every day Americans and then we introduce you to people.
Who have come up with solutions.
To those issues or problems so the theme today is the holidays and things related to the holidays.
Getting to your holiday celebration.
Dealing with your relative is once you've gotten there and then.
Spotlighting some ways to maybe make a little bit of extra money as we get set to go shopping for.
The upcoming Christmas and Chanukah holidays that are that are later next month so let's get right to it.
And talk with Jennifer waters who is the consumer confidential columnist at MarketWatch.
Dot com the issue is terrible holiday traffic.
Causing rage the solution tips on how to reduce the -- stressed.
Jennifer people do get a little.
A little angry at that the when they're having to deal with the long lines and all of that.
Security stop and all the craziness that that goes along with traveling.
And this year I was reading your latest column they're gonna be more people traveling than there were last year.
Well and now that that's at Miami who's not gonna get a little bit and raised during all of this you've got some 2425.
Traveling over this Thanksgiving period.
And innocence and a lot of -- -- -- after remember when families on Bob you've got little kids involved.
There's a lot of stuff that goes with -- -- others -- -- and blind kids and strollers and you know so it's gonna slow thing that happened that that's what gets people like a little -- -- -- My wife and I have four young kids and we try to avoid flying with them at all costs but we have family down in Florida sometimes we have no choice of people look at us they see is coming.
At the airport and they just sort of get out of the way they don't there and they pray that they're not on our flight.
Down to West Palm Beach and I am one I don't think you're gonna -- to be I don't want to be able to all right so let's talk about some of these tips that you've got for ways to.
Reduce the stress.
That that surrounds travel at the time of the holidays print your boarding pass.
At home so that's an easy enough thing to do.
That isn't easy nothing really surprised at how few people even think better even the -- and you know but at home even.
Without the boarding pass just even check in so that you know you've you've got your flight you know that.
-- they know you're coming so -- -- it's kind of a no brainer but a lot of people forget about it.
But if you're traveling with luggage if you're checking luggage.
You know you can check -- ahead -- -- -- do it on line but you still have to deal with folks at the airport to get your luggage through.
Yet -- exactly at which is one of the reasons why I also say.
Skip bringing your luggage -- just avoid that when you've got all those people there and you've got all those people who.
Flying and and that it's you've got the -- of waiting in line and checking in with your baggage.
Then you have a hassle of going to the baggage to return.
To get you know to get it back and -- there's a possibility with all though it being Baxter piglet could be lost or stolen not the -- a little bit higher.
So I don't you know I say don't don't even bother if if you have to bring more than a Carrey and -- didn't ship -- a couple they.
-- good idea sign up for online and text alerts and this is important in case.
Your flight is changed for some reason the airline can get in touch with you easily and -- be a lot of hassle.
And -- actually -- you know the other part about that is that you can also have the people who you are going to see or who might be picking up at the airport sign up for those as well.
I was just on a fly it this.
And that they told me exactly -- the flight was taking off I knew exactly what was going on and then after the flight took off.
They sent me a text saying you know -- I was on -- so I knew -- They've every effect saying that you know the flights taken off and -- Atlanta at this time -- I mean that's important information for you to have just you know navigate your way through the airport and such but.
For the people on the other and that's good information for them -- have as well.
Absolutely I hadn't thought about but that's a great idea.
If you've ever been in a car with me on the way to the airport and big campaign.
The clock is ticking I start to get very NC it's not I'm not very pleasant to be around so.
Check traffic reports I guess that's an important thing so that you don't miss your flight.
Well and I think that's another kind of no brainer in some respects that people justice don't pay attention to it.
I have to say you need to be aware of what the weather is what's going -- with the weather I mean.
If the traffic if if your traffic from your home here airport is typically ten minutes or 45 minutes.
But now it's raining out AdWords raining by the airport it's not quite ready -- you yet.
He should know that that's gonna -- up a little bit and that of course know what the weather -- Where every year wherever your habits too because that's gonna have some some impact -- you know what the travel is going to be like to.
And I'm sad about hurricane sandy I think we all learned with her -- hurricane -- that.
The weather in other parts of the country is gonna have a huge shift back I want goes on in the rest of the country -- need not be aware exactly.
The last thing that we had on the on that graphic we've been shown we RD mention of that is to avoid bringing luggage if you can.
Easier said than done especially if you're traveling with with young kids but I can I get your point and chipping it out a couple of days in advance is an excellent option.
I want to talk to you about the airlines in general because this month in particular are you know some of it's been mooted to do with sandy but we've we've heard about computer glitches that united -- been.
Pilots there is labored problems that are causing issues for certain.
Carriers what's going on within the airline industry and Howell.
Sort of reliable do you think it is as we get ready for this busy travel season.
Well you have to remember that you know you've got so many people out there flying in and you know what it it would if it weren't reliable all we wouldn't be getting anywhere so -- You really have to realize that it is is a fairly reliable system and it does it operates pretty well that that the glitches that we see do tend to be kind of local -- Or you know just an internal thing it's not necessarily a big system wide fallout.
I think what we saw with hurricane sandy with just how important it is to stay in touch with.
What's going on with your flights and such because.
I mean I was -- stories about how the players are getting canceled because they couldn't get through New York where they couldn't get the plane out of New York that they Chicago.
Or LA acts or something like that.
You know I mean we had a lot of those cancellations coming down right away I thought the airlines were very.
Responsible on quite on top of that kind of thing I mean obviously we don't have these kinds of you know traffic there or -- you know weather like this that comes of along a lot.
Thankfully thankfully but you know I think I think the airlines that haven't figured it out.
I mean I -- stay with people is because now so many people feel like they're being nickel and dime by the airlines.
But finally the airlines are getting into -- you know either of the sense of profitability that for many many years they never saw.
Why is that well how -- they finally started to it to make money again and and does that mean that you know sort of charging us.
Four our luggage for example or for a little snack on the -- that that is gonna go away or or those charges here to -- Those charges that definitely here to stay there's no question about it then and there'll be more down -- -- if they could figure out a way to do it for sure.
I think that we'll also see baggage fees creep up and sides.
But you know and we -- -- -- -- like forget to bring carry ads I think and I think we might even see that big number of people are taking Kerry -- through playing with them now.
But you know -- the airlines themselves -- always kind of suffered from it being on the edge of making money -- not making money based on a number of things the climate.
The economic situation.
That gas I mean -- the price of fuel has a huge impact.
I'm on airlines' profitability thing you see them managing that better now because of -- that.
Exit fees that they're putting on us but then the other most important thing in this is something that's gonna affect people.
On this holiday travel and that isn't that they're pulling so many planes out of this guy that the capacity.
On the app on the flights themselves.
Our ninety's sometimes even a 100% full.
So that's you know that means they're getting money for every single seat and that's was one of the things that's always hurt airlines.
Is that they've got empty seats and that's the revenue that's just loss like that there's no recouping that.
Are you traveling Jennifer this week are now I know better.
Couldn't -- happy that I do.
-- -- I'm actually working and and we've got people coming over for dinner in the afternoon.
But -- happy Thanksgiving to you Jennifer waters is the -- here care thank you the consumer confidential columnist at marketwatch.com.
Which is a great site.
Loved MarketWatch -- you can read -- latest column at marketwatch.com.
And you can find her on Twitter at general waters and KW.
Happy holidays again thanks so much for joining us.
Thank you so much.
Take a quick break when we come back once you have listened to all Jennifer's travel tips and gotten to wherever it is that you're going.
That you're surrounded by your family your in laws and you name it how do you deal -- everybody and avoid some -- mobile talk about that.
When solution America comes right back to collect.
Welcome back to solution America on this Thanksgiving -- didn't show we talked about traveling to wherever you're going.
To celebrate the holiday.
Now we're gonna talk about dealing with your family wants you all get there and you're under the same roof the issue here is how to deal with relatives during the holidays.
But the solution avoid the drama and stay positive French German is -- this right now she's a licensed.
Psychotherapist you can find her on Twitter at Fran underscores Sherman.
Her website is ask therapist friend dot com let's talk to you Fran thanks so much for joining us.
All my pleasure nice talk to you is well it wouldn't be the holidays without drama though right.
No drama -- -- line and I think people get so.
Worked up for so many different reasons you know preparing for the family coming preparing your meal.
I mean there's so many things the anxiety of seeing relatives that you -- -- I mean.
There's a plethora of reasons why people get really anxious.
All right so let's give people some of your tips on what to do to try to -- Try to avoid the stress and maybe not at what the drama all together the deal with that and the first -- you've got his focus on the positive what do you mean.
Well you know I think that we really can't take our minds and and it's not hocus pocus but we really can't instead of thinking about all the things that we have to do different -- angst.
What do people that we're gonna see that bring -- things try to think about the good things about Thanksgiving try to think about.
If things from childhood that you remember that made you feel happy think -- think about the people that you're gonna see that make you feel good.
So again billion mind with the positive is because if you think positively you really do feel better.
Instead of thinking about all my god I have to do this -- I don't know I have to see this one so that just brings you -- -- -- really negative space.
Good advice regardless of what time of year it is to try to it to -- positively.
Certainly especially at this time of the year say what you're grateful for at the table that's.
That and we have a typo on the on the screen there so apologies for -- where you are but that's it that's a very important thing I think especially Thanksgiving.
Go around the table and just.
Thinking of what you wanna say and listening to what your your relatives might have to say I can imagine that being and we've got an -- -- -- -- great experience.
You know what if it it really is Rick and I I I really told my clients to try to do it every day but I think Thanksgiving is such a great time because.
If people are a little anxious they don't know what to talk about you really start your meal and I always -- -- at my home.
Start the meal with every person saying two or three things that they're grateful for.
And it can be small things and it can be little things you know can be I'm so happy did you know that it's a nice day out when it whenever you can think boy you know but but it.
You know I think that we've experienced a lot of angst this year are.
You know just with hurricane sandy threaten the whole northeast so I think we really need to.
Again be grateful her for anything and everything that we have and it puts our minds and our families in a good spot.
Teaching if there are young kids at the table teaching kids about gratitude in the importance of being.
Grateful for for all that we have is is it is an important lesson for young children.
And next thing then the next thing on the list is try to relax before the holiday easier said than done especially if -- hosting twenty people -- so.
You you'll -- and I happens to be hosting sixteen on Thursday but I'm trying not to freak out about it you know I think.
Have still a lot of relaxation brief thing.
-- -- -- and and one of the things I really tell people is to say one thing at a time one step at a time.
If you need to go out into some exercise just to relax your body.
Again think about positive things do what -- you can do to make yourself feel relaxed so that.
Wing you know preparing again to try to make yourself less frenetic less frantic about everything and it and it is hard there's no doubt.
But I think it's important to that you get through it and that it doesn't become overwhelming.
On the day at the holidays that you can enjoy it at all.
And the last thing on our on our full screen graphic here is remember.
Which -- you know it seems like in such an obvious thing of course you have to breathe what kind of breathing are you talking about.
I really I really tried to encourage people to do -- from -- -- reading and that really means but breathing -- and nose and filling up your stomach sort of like a balloon.
And breathing out slowly.
So that if you're feeling really stressed take.
A one minute just a one minute break and stand there and just breathe or sit down and -- It helps your body to.
You respiration rate to slow down and being -- thinking about breathing you're not thinking about what.
What is making you anxious to see you're really giving yourself and your whole body a time out and it really does help -- -- -- talk to you this is -- on on on the list of tips but it just sort of that you are in thinking about this hour conversation that we were gonna have later today I was thinking about the role.
That food and alcohol could play.
In stress around the holidays of course this is a holiday.
That's really centered around a big meal and a lot of family get together and there's gonna be drinking involved and I -- Imagine.
You know maybe a little too much eating or too much drinking could really add to the stress at a holiday family -- It -- -- can I mean if if people.
Can personal -- too much people -- often say things that they really shouldn't say or don't really need.
Common and that really can cause tremendous problems if it's somebody's upset with the family member they might say something that they don't really mean to say.
So I think the post but should try to be cognizant and we all should try to be cognizant very aware how much we drink.
And as far as eating you know try not to eat in excess because it really does make you feel ill it's not good for us and then people just want to go to sleep.
And it it kind of to -- the whole mood of the holiday.
So it it's really important that's a great point that you brought out.
What about for families where there have been some simmering issues may be between.
Siblings that are that are unresolved and hear everybody's going to be getting together.
You know and maybe there is.
Not a complete a strange -- but.
The error if you could be some awkward moments that there are these unresolved issues is it better you know here we are it's Tuesday.
Would it be better and better for me to call my brother before Thursday and maybe have a phone conversation.
Before we all get together or that you know grandma's house -- or -- this mean that that you should try to avoid talking about all together what do you what do you tell a patient about that.
You know it really it it it's a great question and it really depends on the relationship if you can call your sibling -- who whoever you're having a problem within say.
Can we just enjoy the holiday and sort of table our discussion for another -- so we can enjoy the holiday that would be great thing.
If you think that -- calling and trying just talk about the issue.
Might make it worse than I would say didn't you know it's not a good time because you don't want to go -- feeling extra angry an extra anxious about the interaction.
But certainly if you can speak to the person and say.
You know let's agree to disagree but let's -- let's try to enjoy the holiday together because that's for everybody's benefit not not just be yours because.
You're part of part of a family so I think it's it's important.
Not to ruin the day because and everybody's gonna remember that Thanksgiving up 2012.
And it was awful and horrible and you don't want that to be the case true true.
And finally her hosts out there you see your having a number of people.
You have your house on Thursday.
Who you know is there a way for all but specifically for the hosts.
Of -- Thanksgiving dinner.
To sort of remain calm during the process -- not only are they dealing with everything they have all these people in their house that they don't ordinarily have.
What is -- -- hosts out there.
I would say -- as much help as humanly possible.
If you have kids ask your kids to help ask your significant other to help.
And really try to make it a family thing that everybody helps used to that you don't feel like you -- the one carrying the burden for everybody.
I think that's so important and people -- usually totally willing to become a part of it help you.
-- I've been clean up because it's it's truly an overwhelming task for one person.
Great -- well don't be ashamed to ask everybody for help.
Great advice -- I know your Thanksgiving will be a huge success my best to you and your family and -- The holiday and thanks for the tips to help all of us enjoy our holiday get togethers Brad Sherman is a licensed psychotherapist you can find her on Twitter -- For an underscore Sherman her website is ask therapist Fran.
Dot com thanks again.
Thank you -- Our quick break and then when we come back on solution America we're gonna talk about.
Ways to -- avoid some of the stress involved -- holiday shopping.
One of the ways that you might be able to do that is by earning a little extra money heading into the busy shopping season which officially kicks off.
This coming Friday we'll talk about that when we come right back don't go away.
All right we ready to kick off the shopping season Black Friday of course is on Friday stories in the news today about.
Wal-Mart employees upset about having to work on Thanksgiving they're opening their doors -- -- -- night at 8 o'clock.
Regardless though wherever you shop a lot of us will be spending and perhaps over spending this holiday season as we get ready for Christmas and Chanukah and buying gifts for everybody.
On our list so can you do in order to try to.
Namibia -- a little bit of extra cash if the issue for you is that you don't have enough wanted to buy all the holiday gets you want to.
A solution some tips on how to raise cash to cover your spending.
And Andrea war -- is here she's the consumer expert could only eighteen you can find terror.
On Twitter at Andrea -- a good to see you thanks very much for coming and thanks perhaps to me so you know this is an interesting idea because a lot of us we want to we want to go.
And -- get gifts for for everybody we want to be generous but.
You know the bottom line is with an economy that hasn't really been sort of humming along the last several years we might not have the money we need to get the gifts that we want to -- -- and you know we see the retailers -- lay away backs to help consumers pay off gifts for a certain amount of money each week.
But you know -- we talk about different ways not to blow your budget what about ways to make money to pad your budget so that you Karen.
Purchase a few extra -- or purchase those gifts that you were able to afford last year.
I like -- my head like the idea of that and one of the ways that you suggest is to get.
Get a seasonal gig like get.
A part times I.
Angle job yet so there are lots of retailers that are looking -- seasonal work in fact career builder announced sixteen employers.
Eighteen T Wells Fargo.
Even retail stores are looking for that seasonal market to pick up a week night shift if you worked during the week a weekend shift.
-- a weekday shift.
And you can put all that extra earnings into a savings account just for your holiday spending.
Otherwise some stores allow you to use that credit that you work towards a purchase -- that retail location and what a great idea until a few hours in order these jobs that these sort of season you know can get -- a call center at a retail -- the media federal restaurants.
And -- -- could be -- this minimalist for hours once a week so you know if that helps to pad your budget with a few hundred dollars more it's worth.
I was gonna say four hours a week over the next several weeks that could really help -- -- and -- the money.
In your pocket and help you get those gets another idea that you have is to sell unwanted.
Stuff like what.
OK well first of all that average American household has 300 dollars in unused gift cards I was going to my wallet I have about forty dollars.
If you're not -- to use it.
You can sell those online there's a website called gift card granny dot com and they'll bite your gift cards for cash for you can exchange them for gift cards to use towards purchases that you'd rather than for storage rather shop that.
Now you're not sure how much money is left on that gift card at some times you think there's only couple dollars and -- it throwing it away.
You can use their gift card balance Tucker -- card granny.
To see how much money is left on the -- on those records and put -- towards against don't let those two dollars -- -- second help you out.
But three dollars of -- you.
This is not crazy -- to -- hard you throw it in a sock -- you forget you forget you put it there and if it's especially if its first store -- restaurant you never go until it.
-- -- -- -- -- -- This is selling don't want to -- what about like it going -- some stuff that noticeable clothing -- the right out and go into consignment store tonight that apparatus -- idea.
Yeah I mean and America ends.
Only where about 20% of their wardrobes and short women are more guilty for a -- But you have tons of -- likely in your closet I am I love selling my old clothes on -- in fact I've racked up almost 200 dollars of the last couple -- To put towards my holiday shopping and even in my PayPal account so doesn't even go into my bank account.
So definitely go -- your -- you can go to a local consignment shop where they help you sell it we're going eBay or Craigslist you could sell.
Home goods as well -- sporting equipment.
What are the other tips you have is to run the other people's -- this doesn't sound like that much fun though but if you don't want to look like notre.
But if you don't wanna commit to us seasonal part time job you can go -- website called task rabbit dot com where people post the jobs they need some -- that.
Help they need help with Bob jogs around the house or whatnot you can help someone go grocery shopping.
Maybe walking their dog.
And guard in -- small little things -- you can -- maybe 1020 dollars a week.
I never heard -- task -- -- and then with hurricane sandy.
I read there was an article it was at the news article that I read that someone posted on task rabbit.
Asking someone to please go see -- -- Staten Island that their father was okay because then there was that he couldn't communicate with his dad who lived on Staten Island.
And he want to know if there was someone on Staten Island who could go and check on -- that is that was fine thankfully yes but that was the first Itar Tass.
I haven't even heard of that sort but cannot agree and then you yourself to if you need help you know -- a job there and -- help someone else Alex and -- -- hit it excellent.
And then the last -- that we have this change your lifestyle so.
Maybe cut back -- yeah I think we knew that I anticipating your job that will a win and spend an average of twenty dollars a week on manicures.
You know what you -- do those yourself if you miss you if you cut those out for a month after receiving eighty dollars that's enough for -- yes.
It and that average cost to clean.
Four bedroom house two bath home.
Is anywhere from 8270 dollars a month and will reduce that for two months you got a couple know the kinds of gets covered and get your friends and are not your friends but your family involved in -- a home for your gas but they're definitely different luxuries that you can cut out just for the couple of months to help.
-- your holiday budget and then of course.
In the new year comes around if you if you can't do without that house leader you know -- backup.
-- -- -- -- -- -- Sort of -- use some of these ideas that you're putting out there not just for the holidays but use it all year.
Hi all you actually -- -- this you know and it's the smallest even.
Purchasing a bottle of water every day at a dollar fifty cannot still quite a few bucks at the end of the month.
-- if he's a reusable water bottles fill up at the office when you're leaving your home you've -- fifty dollars in savings and you start doing that now by the.
Holidays my wife and I had a similar discussion about Starbucks -- yes and couldn't Starbucks fan my wife was the start she's actually kicked the habit for anyway -- months.
And it really is amazing how much it adds up if you -- -- if you're a smoker for example is my that you couldn't.
You really it might.
Give you the impetus to perhaps quit when oh you look at how much money and you would have and that in your bank account that you would have that you're not spending on cigarette.
Yes so get your calculator out look at your monthly spending habits and you can figure out appeasement tweaks to make to help you cover those holiday expenses Andrea -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And thank you for participating in the chat -- for being with us today hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.
We'll see you again next week to care about.
