Christmas season is personal finance expert Dave -- -- Dave let's start with that headline right there.
A lot of people victimized by identity theft and it's a family member -- blame.
Yeah I had another one out of town or somebody that you know locker room made an ex girlfriend ex boyfriend those kinds of things up.
A lot of it's fairly close to home and that makes it particularly sad because you have to file a police report to not have to pay the debt.
And so it really create some real mess when someone's coming enough to steal your own -- and -- a heady guard decide guard against that not have friends or don't could still keep in touch with family family -- Well you got to choose both carefully I get close but up you guys are family members and friend.
I'm not one kid -- But we're we're stuck -- those but you know you have to just be careful and thoughtful and you know it if there's a toxic situation.
With a relationship you just got to be aware of that you always want to have identity theft protection.
You don't wanna fool around with suspicious web sites and -- the type of protection you want is always one that assigns a caseworker to work out the problems -- you.
That's the biggest problem without entity that you don't all the money when someone's children and you just gotta go clean up the -- sure.
Dave what are your -- was avoid suspicious website this time a year a lot of people are shopping on line and it if you're not an Amazon or one of the big ones you might think well I should I really trust this person with my credit card weasel Walter dot com from from.
Let will be clue right there but if they don't have a security a badge on there of some kind something like a Verisign.
A lot of -- software on your computer will pop up and say are you sure you wanna do this -- and so you can check their security.
Guidelines in their protocol real quickly you don't have to be a computer -- to do that.
And you really should don't throw your numbers around out there and people start emailing you that's called Phishing.
Asking you for information at this time of the year be very careful with that that's something -- stay completely away from -- him.
Okay here's an email Janet from Florida has this question for apple -- doesn't -- yeah.
What is the best way to dispute an item on my credit report.
Well the federal fair credit reporting act.
Gives the consumer basic guidelines and basic rights if there's something on your credit report that is inaccurate.
You have the right to dispute it and if they cannot prove that the item is accurate within thirty days they have to remove it.
Now if if someone is reporting inaccurate information they may re reported you may have to go to the information through the process again.
But what we recommend as you write the credit bureau reports -- the credit bureau agency a letter certified mail return receipt requested so you have proof they received it and then.
Let that that let that denial if you start and that thirty days later your out -- from Mississippi right to do my shopping online -- -- a credit card because of where that would have the same fraud detection by using my debit card is this true.
You know that's the biggest myth out there about the debit card or debit card with a visa and MasterCard has the exact same fraud protections.
That a credit card -- exact you have a zero liability in the event someone steals your information you know credit card or a debit -- -- -- costing it must be costing credit card companies.
Just -- -- a year because it seems like there's so much more fraud and ways to keep up with that are not intact.
Well they don't do a very good job underwriting the issuing of credit cards actually only check the credit on about one -- -- of the applications.
Because there are massively large industry that basically using a shotgun approach so they invite.
Identity theft into their industry by their lack of underwriting skills well let's see if you've just made peoples' holidays a little happier.
