Take that 98% deal right now and deal with tax -- on the rates later.
That is not a Democrat talking that is a Republican congress -- Tom Cole is talking to us right now.
Welcome everybody I'm Neil Cavuto coming do you live from sunny California it's the tax capital of the nation by the way -- Democrats and at least.
One Republican have things their way.
Taxes could soon be going even higher.
For couples earning north of 250000.
Dollars a year maybe a lot of -- That's because Republican congress -- Tom calls as we ought to freeze tax rates at the current levels for the majority of Americans.
Just to -- for Christmas -- deal with the top 2% of likely see their rates -- -- That three game this reacted today from house speaker -- Monday.
I told Tom earlier in our conference -- that I disagreed -- You're not gonna grow the economy if you raise tax rates on the top of the top two rates it'll hurt small businesses all over our economy -- why.
This is not the right approach.
Now the -- that -- -- obvious that storm Oklahoma.
Assistant Tom Pope in a first on fox congressman.
He singled you out.
For calling you went out but -- feel about them.
Hey look I like the speaker and that we have a great relationship we're able to.
Talk directly and honestly with one another so -- no problem with that and that would expect him to express his opinion just as you would expect -- -- -- I think what he's saying is your pre -- evening.
Now that's just nonsense.
Their morality is tax rates go up for every American on December 31.
If we can make sure that doesn't happen for 98% of them and continue to fight for the other 2%.
I think that makes a lot of sense I can think the American people will listen to us.
In that discussion if they know their taxes aren't going up.
I think there will win the argument I really do believe most people understand raising tax rates is bad for the economy cost jobs and -- actually in the long term.
-- -- You know.
But right now everybody's taxes are scheduled to go up and and last week fix that.
Paradoxically President Obama becomes the defender of the bush tax cuts for 98% of the people who -- no such thing that's something.
We accomplish we ought to take pride in and then again I'm not for raising rates on anybody.
Period.
But all right here we know the end result will be you mentioned the presidents -- and he seized on your remarks as well this is from President Obama.
Glad to see.
If you've been read the papers lately that more -- more Republicans in congress seem to be agreeing with this idea that we should have a balanced approach so.
If both parties agree we should not raise taxes on middle class families.
Let's begin our work -- where we -- great.
So we have the president and really you're saying congress and the speed now not right now I -- -- you -- look it -- -- you -- -- you.
See this -- I don't daily rates I don't need.
Think rates on anybody should go -- I'm against tax increases on anybody period ended the -- The right thing -- -- doesn't take a positive action -- by congress to raise taxes if taxes going up -- -- we do something to stop.
If I can stop them for 98% of the people and then continue to fight on the others are well if you think we're gonna gain ground by holding the American people hostage.
Saying that you know their taxes -- -- I actually disagree this is not our leverage in this debate discussion -- the president but look I respect the speaker.
I support the speaker I've supported one any tough vote that -- had.
He can negotiate a great and better deal and I think I know we -- and I think he's got a chance done.
They'll certainly have my support but this was a comment made by the way it off the record deal with conversation they have -- what do you think.
I -- this is what I think.
It was -- that's fine I'm quite happy to defend my position.
But it's not as if I'm working against the speaker our conference quite the opposite.
So you don't think there's a division in the ranks congress and by that I mean it did that Republicans seemed to be.
Kind of twisted -- -- now that.
If they go along with with pushing very hard for rates not to go up to be -- they do risk as you pointed out.
Having rates go up for everybody so I I understood what you're saying address -- -- that that doesn't happen at least to the 98%.
But but do you think that it would even be likely that in a new congress.
You could.
Correct things of the 2% through the room rates ago wouldn't it be -- I think it looks.
Yeah I.
I do believe we can correct things but.
Again I don't think if you allow the Democrats who opposes the defenders for tax cuts by the way they almost all -- in the first place not a recognized.
This is getting and making permanent 80% of the bush tax cut for 98% of the American people that's a victory now lost.
And there were still free to continue to pursue it because.
Their policy is the president's policy is bad policy you raise rates it'll hurt the economy field.
Cause less investment fewer jobs we can win that argument but if we try to make it while most Americans are suspect.
That we might that be complicit in raising their taxes I think we're more likely lose so again that's just might -- -- we don't have it.
Debate here.
Over political theology is debate over political tactics.
All right congress and pleasure thank you very very much thank you --
