Drugs sold one organ mom is raising eyebrows for her decision to treat her daughter's illness with -- this oil pills.

She claims it's for her own good.

But is it.

Joining me now is the director of the adolescent substance abuse program at Boston's children hospital doctor Sharon Levy good morning -- doctor.

Good morning this is such a sad story this girl has cancer.

She seven years old.

And she's been treated in a variety of different ways but an -- it appears to be legal.

For her mom to also give her pot.

Does she have to get that through a doctor or not.

Well I think that the law says that she has to get a recommendation.

From a doctor but it.

That gives a lot of flexibility to the mother to administer the drug and decide how much the child needs.

And I should also say that the law is a state line there's confusion between state law and federal law they don't match so.

Federal law still says that use of an hour marijuana is illegal on soon it's it's really a gray area didn't.

I want you to listen to the -- Because she's going to defend why she's giving these pills to her -- track.

Instantly when she started taking the candidate so I only -- Very good.

Reaction to Aiken told her -- her pain.

Every -- and she had she just turned into an -- a child I feel that the long term consequences of narcotic pain relievers.

Are a lot more damaging to -- Then a simple organic.

-- -- But do you agree with that doctor I mean -- seven years old she's being given pot basically.

What's -- -- affixed to UC long term for her.

-- I I don't agree with that.

I think medical marijuana is an unfortunate term because it's so confusing.

Cabin lights are molecules that are biologically active -- they clearly have therapeutic potential so.

-- do reduce nausea and they can stimulate appetite and they can reduce pain and clearly there's there's something there on that we can work with but.

And they also have very serious side effects many of which the -- weighed down the line so things like increased risk of depression.

Anxiety.

On increased risk of developing schizophrenia.

And also we know that.

Children in particular and and adolescents who still have developing brains.

Are at risk of dropping IQ points when there are exposed to marijuana for long periods of time so there are very serious side effects right.

You know when we make medications what we do -- we manipulate molecules so that.

We reduce the side effects.

And maximize the therapeutic potential but marijuana that we haven't done is just -- -- -- -- such a complicated story and the little -- said it actually makes her feel silly.

Imagine that I'd definitely be thanks so much for your thoughts on this -- -- case.

Thank you.
