Hi I'm Bill O'Reilly thanks for watching us tonight the war on Christmas is a big picture that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo.

Whatever the far left and viciously attacks you know -- on something.

Every year when we report secular progressive assaults.

On the traditions of Christmas.

The crazy left wounds begin a vitriolic campaign to diminish me in this program.

There is a reason why they are doing that and it has nothing to do with Santa Claus let's take it step by step.

No intelligent person could possibly see a secular display of Christmas as an imposition of religion.

When the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree here in New York City was lighted last night.

No one threw themselves to the ground screaming about Jesus that did not happen.

New York city police -- -- round up the onlookers and force them into Saint Patrick's Cathedral a block away.

Nothing religious happened at the tree -- it was just a fun occasion.

Also you heard an -- on this program last -- say the federal holiday of Christmas impose his religion on him.

What religion would upbeat.

He says christianity.

But christianity is not an organized religion a church that can be imposed.

There are many different churches that promote the Christian philosophy in many different ways.

Does he atheists think the federal government is promoting -- -- them.

-- -- -- -- After that interview the crazy web -- people emerge screaming that I'm wrong christianity is indeed -- relate these people are so stupid it's painful.

Christianity is a philosophy.

You don't have to believe Jesus is god in order to admire his view on life.

Millions of Muslims.

Admire Jesus as a profit.

In fact the United States was founded on Judeo Christian philosophy.

That's what shaped our constitutional and it's again if you -- stone cold dumb.

And don't understand the difference between an organized church.

And gave philosophy.

I cannot help.

In 1927 president Calvin Coolidge made my point when he sent this Christmas message to the American people quote.

Christmas is not -- time -- season but a state of mind.

To cherish peace and goodwill.

To be plenty -- immersed.

Is to have the real spirit of Christmas we think on these things there will be born in ops a savior and -- -- -- shot.

A star sending its gleam of hope.

To the world and quote.

-- for my private collection by the way.

Is Calvin Coolidge promoting religion in that Christmas greeting.

Of course not he is promoting a mindset of goodwill.

Now the more intelligent -- -- people realize that what I'm telling you is absolutely correct historically and theologically.

Many of them don't care they want any hint of spirituality.

Out of the public square.

Earlier this week Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee was asked by reporter exactly why he will not call the state Christmas tree.

A Christmas tree.

We understand how some people feel like you.

Somehow.

Negated that civilians you have some really.

Needless to manage its commitments.

That you -- to me he didn't want to believe this -- Half.

Times are changing our -- the governor told you the truth.

He's tying the Christmas situation.

Into secular progressive.

Politics.

Mr.

javy wants to ignore traditions of America and build a more in conclusive nation.

We're Judeo Christian philosophy is Tampa.

That's the big picture here that's the big picture what it's all about out.

The secular progressives want a new America and traditional Christmas.

Is -- a part of it.

-- -- -- Now for the top story tonight.

Last night we were able to talk with governor Chafee and I admire him for coming on because he knows he -- then I'm pretty fed up.

-- his point of view.

So governor are -- holiday tree a holiday tree really governor.

What did tradition of -- holiday tree whereas a holiday tree come from.

Well last year when the subject came out about what we're going to do this time of year I said.

Just do what the previous governor -- we're not gonna change anything.

And that's what we did somehow this is all erupted.

Into some kind of controversy but I did what the previous governor did -- -- holiday tree.

And the governor before him so this goes back to the ninety's by the do you know the traditions of the trees.

And why it is used.

Around the Christmas season do you know where that came from.

I've heard all the different.

Scenarios although some say it's some kind of -- to do paganism but the main thing it's a happy time with here and I.

And I'm happy and I always having had my time as having at my house -- -- a Christmas -- a happy time in my house and he should be here.

But we also have to be conscious of changing times.

We'll get -- -- changing time thing in a moment now.

The Christmas tree came from Germany all right that's where first came from.

And they decorated it for the children.

And then -- all it it kind of morphed into.

A Santa Claus thing you -- you kind of Christmas god gifts under the tree.

There's a traditions -- -- -- -- went well I don't way -- way this is true no mention this only resolution to it.

That that supersedes the governors of Rhode Island with all due respect.

There's a tradition to the Chris -- -- right it's there in context.

So guys like you -- man in the previous governor is and I'm sure there of people other in other places that you know why.

We don't want the Christmas tree tradition anymore and that's what tees people off you say you want people happy.

They're not happy with the governor they want you to call a Christmas tree a Christmas tree there is no holiday tree there's no tradition of a holiday tree.

Do you remember did you have to go to public school and have to say the lord's prayer in public school and our county school and everybody will be -- -- -- Okay well I did and get this first we had to -- pledge allegiance which is good but then all of us had to say the lord's prayer.

Are -- -- have -- -- be the name.

But then the Supreme Court ruled.

That that should not be that all students non Christians have to say a Christian prayer and there was outrage just like there is now with a streak but now you look back -- When you think of course you can't pass non Christians to say it.

Christian prayer.

Even public school so these controversies you generate them here but there really shouldn't be controversy I think this can -- -- on the unification by everybody.

No not at all yeah yeah -- -- -- Uses diluted resemble it's not a symbol of religion has nothing to do -- this is a secular building.

-- the public the lord's prayer by people smaller donations governor the lord's prayer it's obviously a religious.

Expression a Christmas trees Zastudil said I think -- -- -- everybody used to have to say it now manor school when the public school -- many -- you can't even valid comparison between a religious prayer and secular symbol that I make any sense this is a public building.

This a public bill that I have a cellular or religion in a public book.

The White House is a Christmas tree okay.

So what's got the White House going to concentrate on Rhode Island can't have a call -- a White House tree known because -- -- now maybe than Barack Obama calls it a Christmas tree.

He's your guy because -- -- history.

Lady ninety years presidents.

And Americans have come together to light.

The national Christmas -- Well when times are changing in here in this building.

A previous governors not only really -- just said continue what the previous government's done that sort of did.

You like to make a lot of controversy so all I can say W I think I -- controversy all I wanna do is keep the traditions of Christmas that make most Americans happy to poll showed not 80% of Americans celebrate Christmas and they want to call it a Christmas tree.

You are in the minority you are imposing your will.

And you're making people unhappy in -- season of joy that's not you're not doing the right thing -- I don't make anybody happy and I just gone into making everybody happy everybody is unhappy -- All right the atheist wanted to -- holiday tree and it wanted to burn it.

Our combined don't even know I'm right you know I'm writing your heart you -- right.

Now your your show Fox News that you guys are too angry with.

-- our our guys have -- Obama hasn't gone I was not get I don't I want our traditions to be respected.

That's all well.

Merry Christmas.

From start governor thanks -- -- heat we appreciate coming on them today.

And by the way the governor gave the good people of Rhode Island exactly thirty minutes today thirty minutes to attend the tree lighting ceremony.

Why the short notice.

He didn't want protesters.
