President Obama is still over one month away from beginning his second term but it's never too early to talk about the next presidential election.
In here with a look ahead to 2016 and the likely candidates for both parties special assistant speechwriter for president Ronald Reagan and Wall Street Journal columnist taking -- -- And former advisor to Bill Clinton and Fox News contributor -- shop everybody.
Sunday for me I want to just make a point to thank you people ask -- how did you get to be Press Secretary at.
And I -- point back to one book that I read in 1994 when I became Press Secretary on the hill.
And it was stores what I sought the revolution home might really change my life he gave me some confidence to be a conservative -- that they will not goodness well what do minus rating and yeah.
Am -- crazy.
It is not too early to start thinking about who's gonna run in 2016 -- -- absolutely not and with Marco Rubio going I think to -- president's birthday party in the caucus state of Iowa I think.
The senator from Florida is beginning.
To think -- are a number of Republicans and given the financial political and organizational.
Challenges that are involved it's almost.
In imperative Dana that if you're gonna run you begin -- soon.
You might even start thinking even before for -- out right is it is as you saw some handing out -- for other offices I'm picky what goes through somebody's mind what what -- the process that.
You think about wow you really could be president and that they.
Big -- but -- what's the process that you go through individually and then maybe with your family.
Well yeah that's a big imaginative leap to imagine yourself as -- -- I think the first thing you have to do right about now or even before now is thanks.
Do I have the right stuff can I do this.
Do mice now some my children are they a it's people who who can accept this and tolerate this.
And -- could they really did it except that can tolerate it meaning they can they do what they think they can.
It is such a good worry -- -- -- -- really grueling thing to run for president you have to talk to yourself in a way about.
Can I take constant media scrutiny a constant pounding from the media.
Is so.
All of that is sort of has to go into the mix them and you have to think -- am -- crazy enough to do this then let's talk about the elephant in the room here it's Hillary Clinton.
Yes really -- -- everybody is on hold until they find out.
What is she going to do I heard today that some of the other potential democratic candidates.
Are having some trouble even finding consultants -- people to work on exploratory committees until they find out what she's gonna do what.
Do you think I think that's right and I think -- a couple of bottom ones here.
First the nomination is Hillary Clinton's.
If she wants it -- -- she's gonna take a year or two deciding but.
My best guess is given that you win.
In -- it came so close and certainly wanted to be president.
That she will in fact do it and if she does I believe she'll get the democratic nomination and be a formidable.
Candidate.
What about on the other side if -- Republicans thinking about running it who -- -- stand out in your mind at this point out of the pack.
Of the sort of usual suspects you can talk about a few of them and I imagine rubio there's there's others who is an island Chris Christie might be one although I'm sure Arnold might disagree with that some -- he has.
Jeb Bush in fact there's a very deep.
Bench I think on the Republican side there's a lot of people will be possible -- public here now.
And who will -- Want to come forward it might be but it's possible 2016 won't turn into quite a fracas on the Republican side and they.
These stately walking towards a coronation on the democratic side I mean I'd say that within.
Within the context of knowing that four years of history can turn any number of things on their -- at a third party candidate possibility is that the -- it.
Earlier this year Gallup said that only 30% of people said they were Democrats 30% Republican the rest for independent is the country right for a third party candidate.
The country is right I've worked on those kind of efforts myself and seen the response that the electorate offers in polls and real world activities to that but -- and there's a problem the electoral system in this country makes it extremely difficult.
For third party candidates to emerge at the same time and -- he's written compellingly and convincingly about this.
There is so much dissatisfaction.
In the electorate towards both sides that there is an equally great desire.
For alternatives to emerge particularly in my view in the senate.
Great transition to my next question or does somebody who would consider running for office in 2016 do they have to be in politics now.
Could someone from the business world emerge and get it done a Wendell Wilkie.
And in 1940 that sort of character who was a Republican businessman.
It is possible with the -- we're living in -- has told us anything it's that anything is it is possible.
But I would tend to think the nominees would.
-- from the political professional classic is part of the thing is is the fundraising -- -- -- President Obama raised about a billion dollars to to spent on the campaign Mitt Romney was not far behind that.
It is is it impossible of that to figure out a -- establish an infrastructure to raise that kind of money that you need to run a campaign.
It's very difficult if you're not in the system and Peggy is right there is the possibility.
And the electorate would embrace a Wendell -- or even -- Ross Perot type.
Figure spot to raise the money.
To put together the political structure.
And to have the energy to do what's necessary make campaign Dana it's very hard for somebody who's never been in the -- and you've seen it firsthand you know how tough it is tough for somebody with no experience to come in and do it -- Okay thank you both compelling and convincing does it and Peggy thank I'm thinking -- -- my.
